So I just got a call from one of the 2 Buell dealers I've been loitering around. I've been looking for a new(er) X, but all they have are XT's. They just got an XB12XP in. Just rolled it unto the showroom floor if I'm interested.
I am.
I've searched around here, and the Buell site. It looks like the XP is an X with smaller bags than the XT, tall windshield, and heated grips. Some mention on other threads about heavier VR and specific wiring. Anything else? Has anyone else seen, or bought one yet?
I go to test it on Friday. I didn't ask which color, it doesn't matter to me. Price was $11,999 (plus all the add ons). Seems like a great price considering it has all the goodies of the $1500 more expensive XT, with the exception of smaller bags.
That's what I thought. But I asked the salesman specifically if they had it there for sale or just as a demo. He told me it was for sale, $11,999. I've got an appt for a test ride on Friday.
The XP is just the X, but with the accessory Outdoorsman cases, accssory tall windshieldm police lights and siren. No difference with the charging system that i know of, and Buell.com dosen't mention it either.
The Police PDF says "30-amp, permanent magnet, single-phase alternator with solid-state regulator (405W @3000 RPM, 405W peak)". That is the same as the X and XT.
Still, even without the extra electric power, all the goodies of the XT for $1000 less (the smaller bags are good enough for me, I think), but with the X superior suspension. I'm not sure if the lights, bar and siren are part of the package.
I don't know what Buell's take is on these things. BMW does sell their P version of the RT to civilians. However, they won't sell you the light/siren kit.
The XP has an *optional* light/siren package, it is not included in the motorcycle. I believe it retails out around $3600, but I could be wrong.
The XP itself...is a Ulysses with different bags, as noted above. No reason not to retail them. No "super-secret" parts, extra-special ECMs (as rumored in many cop cars), or stealth technology.
I rode a retired HD FLHP (Road King Police) for years. Nothing special there either...mechanically. But, birch white with a reflective blue stripe down the tank and saddlebags....folks DIVE out of your way when they see you coming, LOL.
>>>Got home yesterday and the GME light bar, PIAA lights, Auto-switch, back-off brake light, H.I.D. kit, Voltage monitor and Buell XP Police bike parts all arrived the same day. . . . Quickly scrambled to hide stuff (which included a new Bianchi shoulder rig and two Safariland Sppedloaders ) from wife.
I'm thinking about just letting all the crud sit and making it a winter project.
Froggy if you want a REAL siren I have a complete Motorola Mara-Trac 100 watt 99 Ch radio with the complete siren/PA package (same as the FBI uses) that I'd be happy to get rid of. . . . hehehehe . . I have, at Road Thing can attest . . BEEN in trouble with it.
They are only available to Purchasing agents that are authorized to have emergency equipment bikes. It is through the same program that the Harleys use for the Kings and Electras. If they sell it to the public, then there cant be any emergency lights on the bike, markers or sirens. We have our light kit coming this week, ours will be going out on demos to the departments, escort services and local forest service. If they sell it to a civilian, they are missing the boat and the point of that bike.
According to the info above the XP is JUST a Uly with the Outdoorsman bags and tall windshield, and without the lights that are optional. Why would selling to a civilian be "missing the boat and the point of that bike."? Is there something else on or in the bike that is different?
I asked the question here, originally, because the dealer that has it for sale knows less about any of the Buell's than folks here. I haven't read anyone saying they have or haven't seen/ridden one. If XP's were only supposed to be sold through emergency/purchasing programs then how would this dealer even be able to offer it for sale? I guess I'll find out tomorrow.
"because the dealer that has it for sale knows less about any of the Buell's than folks here." to give credit to Court, That is an accurate statement.
The bikes are fleet service/duty bikes and available through the same restrictions that the Harley Davidson Service bikes are. Apparently there needs to be some dealer/franchise clarification on who that bike can be sold to. It is my understanding that the bike (and the two year program to develop it) was specifically designed as a service duty for L.E.O's, Emergency Response, and Escort/Pursuit functions. They are special order bikes, they are not allocated units. The bike they received should be a dealer demo unit to rep to the Agencies.
And as for missing the boat... if you have local guys riding motorcycles like the ST1100, the BMW or even the Harley; there is an opportunity to bring them to the Buell side of the house. Commercial and service contracts are what helped Harley survive through the Depression, its a smart move by Buell to be in this market arena.
That makes a lot of sense, bringing them into the Buell fold. So is there something else in there for the 2 years of development? And, are you saying they can they ONLY sell it to or use for demos for LEO's, etc? Am I going to waste my time making the nearly hour trip up there? Is this shaping up to be a bait and switch for one of the XT's they have? I really appreciate your straight views on this.
Well its a ULY so you will have those differences, the size of the bags, the front turn clock, the tires, the taller shield and the taller ground clearance. The cop ULY is essentially a ULY for all stats and purposes. The XT is noticibly different handling performing machine. Caveat Emptor, if they sell you the bike, then that is on them, Everything that we have been doing has been through our local Fleet purchasing agent for Emergency vehicles. (and I cant sell those to the general public, unless they are lease returns and used) I would just make sure all your I's are dotted and T's crossed.
But it is the new 'Blues' Mobile Cop tires, cops motor, cop suspension, now you just need a 1/2 pack of smokes, a full tank of gas, sunglasses and headed to Chicago under the cover of night
I'll see in an hour or so. I'm off to see them, test ride the XP and XT. If we can make the numbers work on my trade in (a V-Rod, boy has that market tanked) then I'm not sure I care which. Both bikes intrigue me and can do 90% (or more) of what I want from it. I kept the V for 4 years, I'm sure the utility of the Uly will keep it in my garage at least that long.
Our local dealer has their XP in and our one of our officers will be heading that way soon to check out the XP! We're hoping to bring it back to the department for a few days. Of course, M2nc, has offered to go and pick it and deliver it to the department!
I went to check it out. We couldn't come to a deal, yet. They have a black XP, and Blue and Red XT's. All 2009's. They want MSRP plus all the freight, delivery, etc. fees for any of them, but are willing to give some extra on the trade if I take one of the XT's.
Now the real question for you guys, the XP has the side bags and heated grips but not the top case or hand deflectors. They say that those only come with the Police package. That isn't how I understood the Buell website, but that's what they say. What is your understanding on this? They also claim the top case is $820 by itself!!
Let me know what you know so I'll be informed when I head back over there. Thanks very much for the info so far.
Getting to ride them back to back, although not dialed in for my weight, I have to say they felt really similar. The XP seemed to have the rear shock wound tight for me, it seemed to buck quite a bit more on small bumps, and seemed jacked up in the back causing me to slide towards the tank. The XT was SWEEEEET! just as it was. I'm amazed how perfect the tall windshield is for my size. The only wind I felt was at the top of my helmet. Quiet. Nothing on the body. Even at 40* I could ride with my helmet faceshield open. Both tracked straight and true even when passing 18 wheelers. My V-Rod feels EVERY wind gust. The Buell's rode straight with no wiggling or wobbling. While the power is good, I'm really spoiled by my V-Rod. I'm sure I could adapt. The Outdoorsman side cases are significantly smaller, 30 liters vs 42 liters. They would be fine for storing riding gear, but a bit small for errands, groceries, etc. If the top case isn't included I'm sure I could find one cheaper than $820.
I'm stoked about getting one, actually either one, once we get some details worked out.
That is how the kit comes, the lights are integrated into the top case for the COP bike, same as with the hand guards and the siren. Its a $2600 kit, that is restricted. If they are going to sell you that bike, get the civilian items, they should be way cheaper.
(PS BUELL needs to make the top case available individually if people are going to start buying these bikes as general public vehicles. Currently I know you cant order just the ULY top case by itself. Its very frustrating and anti logic esp for the crew that just WANT ONLY THE TOP CASE, and dont care for the side bags. I dont know how many times I have had that discussion. Somebody needs to FIX that) Sorry, end of rant, wheres my Hammer?
Slicker, do us a favor and look into a part number I stumbled on: 92031-06Y. It claims to be a topcase kit and go for $375, which sounds like it might be a winner.
Froggy, work is back open Tuesday (we are closed for winter hours Sun & Mon) I will look at it then, but that -06y at the end makes me believe that it is for the older 06 bike that didnt have the Outdoorsman smaller bags to it.
Maybe if you ordered it as a stock item replacement you could get it, because it doesnt look like its going to be listed as an accessory item.
The part number, from the diagrams of it that I posted, is Y1012.1AU but it would not make a good mount for aux lighting unless you are planning on using the red/blue is is designed for that mount to the side.
There are 11 other parts that make up the entire light mounting system.
