Well, tomorrow, I put on the uniform for the last time.... I officially start terminal leave tomorrow. I dont post in the QB often, and dont know the last time I started a thread in here... Anyway, tomorrow, begins 45 days of terminal leave, and the next chapter of my life... It was a long 10 years...but, on the flip side, it went fast.. some will know what I mean there. Anyway, I will be traveling up Hwy 77N, to I10 East, all the way from Houston to Jacksonville, then I95 North to New Haven CT, then 91, to 84 to Rte 32 home.... So, if anyone has any comments on the conditions of highways, fuel, etc, lemme know. I will towing the 2 bikes behind my old tired 200K Rodeo... Believe me, NO ONE will miss this tow rig, and the trailer... Anyway, I know one way or the other, not too many people(if any care), but, I have been on this board for a long while, and, figure, why not.... To all in Texas, I will miss the mild winters, BUT, wont miss sweating my arse off the 9 months out of the year... and where I am stationed(or was?), there is a serious lack of twisties.... SO... On the closing note..... I have only ever had one fear in life... being a failure.... so, I think needless to say, at this point, I am a bit nervous. But, I do this for my daughters. I have paid my debt to this country over the last 10 years, I have nothing to prove... well, other than hopefully I can be a better father... I am projecting to hit the road wednesday morning, be in Jax thursday, and in Mass friday night or saturday morning... Thats all for now... Thanks for listening...er... reading.. Chase | ||

Thanks Guys... Hammer, come hell or high water, I will be seeing you for HHR this month. Already to roll.... Joe, if I wasnt worried about towing through the mtns of TN and western VA, I would make a trip up there.. I figure... I am 28, still plenty of time to start over... hell, I never thought I would be HERE... I started this trip 10 years ago.. mostly, because I had a great job, great pay, and was pissing it away in fines, impound fees, insurance, etc.. too young and stupid to have a good job... I wasnt ready... woke up one day with ALMOST nothing.. had my truck, my bike, my boat(which hopefully I will fix this winter), was evicted from my townhouse(due to noise, etc, I NEVER missed a payment).. Was time to grow up... Now, I am re-married(some of you are familiar with THE first disaster). I have accomplished more than I thought possible at that point... Hell if I thought I could pull it off up there, I would start another shop... but.. Anyway... I havent slept in 2 days... and it seems tonight might be another one of those nights.. Been shaking since about 3:30 this afternoon, I had just finished checking out with the RDML, the ExecDir, and the COS... went and signed my DD214 at 1533 Central time.. Nervous or not about turning the page... I already have the page partially turned... I just hope my confidence pays off, only time will really tell.... Time for another shot... Chase | ||

You don't know shit until you are at least 30. You get two for one credit for years of military service. That makes you 38. I'd put money on you making it just fine. | ||

I left the military at 30. It was scary at first. But...after a short adjustment period my life since the military has been much better than my life in it. Best of luck to you. You will do fine. | ||

The new GI Bill gives you all the same as before but will give you BAH for the zip code that your learning institution is in at e-5 BAH levels. Don't know if that is in your future but rent money just for taking a couple of classes is a sweet deal. Good luck on your separation. | ||

You get two for one credit for years of military service. I knew there was a reason I feel like a 50-year-old sometimes...  Chase, don't worry about adapting. I have plenty of friends who got out and are doing just fine. If I had kids I'd probably think about getting out too. | ||

Chase: First of all THANK YOU for your service. It is a truly honorable thing that will make each remaining day of your life shinier. You should rightfully be proud of your service. You'll find, in transition, that the traits you've learned in the service will serve you well among the ranks of the civilian population. You'll find yourself naturally falling into leadership roles. You are not starting over . . . . you are turning to the next chapter and I'm betting it will be fun and exciting. I remember signing my DD-214. Crazy day! I came back to Milwaukee with 30 days of paid leave and a 1984 Cutlass Supreme. I soon found a job and used every penny of my GI bill over the next four years. I got my first good job when the CIO saw that I had military experience. He asked me "what does mission mean to you?" I replied, "you keep working till the job is done.". Turns out he was a retired officer. I was offered the job later that day and things have worked out pretty good. With the way the housing market is, now would be a GREAT time to land a job and use that VA loan to buy a nice place cheap. I don't do timing covers anymore, but if you ever need another one, I would do it for you! | ||

Good luck out there! I've got a weird military history. Enlisted>Naval Academy>Civilian for a year>Back enlisted in the Reserves. I missed the military to much to not be a part of it, and even though the Reserves suck, it give me cheap and good health insurance, and dental insurance. | ||

Chase, I felt the same, I reitred form the Army with 23 years in 2005. Trust me when I say your leadership attributes you take for granted will show through, and be noticed... I put mine on for the last time on July 31st 2005. Took 90 days terminal leave. Worked for a real estate company for 3 months then decided to move to CO to work for this company called NRHS. Now 3 years later I own the company and it has been very good to me. My advice is to look for a job doing something you love. Dont let the salary be your biggest decison maker as you most likely will end up in a job you hate and your performance will suffer. Once your boss sees that your employment will most likely be short lived. Employers want happy employees. They get rid of the nagative ones as they do nothing but bring the whole company down. | ||
