Having a REALLY slow day at work, just went out and pulled the inner airbox cover. WOW! Fired it up with the outer skin off, and my boss was standing next to the bike. Blipped the throttle, and he jumped back a step. Said he didn't want to get sucked in. For those of you that have not tried this yet, spend 15 minutes and see if you like it. It is worth the time to see if or not, no $$$ to invest, and you can put it back just as easily. Just gave me CHILLS! Rob | ||

Yes Rob it does make a pretty wicked sound. I ran mine without, after getting that new airbox cover and loved the sound but alas with the D&D you can't even hear yourself think much less the intake noise. | ||

I gave mine a little blip with the upper AND lower air boxes removed - LOUD! | ||

What are the pro's/con's of running this without the inner box......other than sound? | ||

Yes. Been running it like this since the post, and am really enjoying it. Wicked sound. No driveability problems, or benefits for that matter. Other than the sound, no noticeable effects. Makes me giggle a lot, tho.  Rob | ||

so with this mod your ram air intake is effectivly eliminated (doesn't matter below 120mph ish right) does anyone think it would be better to run the XB style airbox cover since it has the mesh covered opening to let in more air? | ||

Not really necessary. There is an inner cover that holds the air filter in place. Rob | ||

How does it eliminate the ram-air intake by removing the inner light-gray plastic cover? That's what I removed... The ram-air system is active over 80 mph. | ||

The airbox cover is not airtight to the frame. Any air "rammed" in would dissipate thru the crack between the cover and the frame. Rob | ||

The inner cover sits on a gasket and makes it seal air tight except for where the air is forced in through the inlet. Now you just have a open air box allowing the intake to suck air from all side of the outer air box cover and not giving it any chance to built up pressure at higher speeds for the ram air effect. |
