Would it be wise/frugal to chop off the batt pack and wire this directly to the 12v system of my bike?? http://www.taylorgifts.com/prodetail.asp?src=FRGL0 406&itemno=28145A&CAWELAID=235102933 ????? |

Frugal yes, wise no... You would need a way to bring down the voltage coming in or risk having the thing toast you alive. Nothing like 3rd degree burns because the vest was working at 4 times it's normal alloted volts and 10 times it;s normal amount of amps... |

8 x 1.5volts = 12 volts, the amps may be different, but the voltage seems right. |

I think you can buy fused controllers from Gerbing. Hard-wire directly to battery terminals using the included 15A fuse. |

I don't think amperage potential matters, won't the voltage and resistance determine the amperage flow? |

but if said vest was only built for AA batters which have 1-3 amps, then a 12volt Buell battery that has about 32 amps will jazz up the wires till they are cherry red... |

yep, V= I/R Voltage equals current divided by resistance. so you need to know what the resistance of the vest is to figure out how many amps it will draw. But if you go with some sort of heat controller (either gerbings or a just a simple potentometer) it should be a semi constant amp draw since the controller just limits the amount that goes to the vest. Or you could not be a cheapskate and just by a nice one for your wife. ![](http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/clipart/biggriney.gif) |

Generally yes, but in this case perhaps not. They may just be trying to pull all the current out of the alkalines that they can get. If they have really strict instructions about not using rechargables (which can deliver like 10 amps if they are good ones) then you will know that is the case. If they allow rechargables, it will probably be fine. |

I have a Rocky heated vest. They aren't around anymore because I think one of the big companies bought them out. It has the carbon fiber/polymer? heater panels. It was designed to run on 8D batteries. I wired it to an SAE (battery tender) plug, and use it through my battery tender pigtail. No problems. No overheating. It draws what it needs. It is in my opinion better than the wire-type heaters. It's a nice even heat. Mine is redneck heat though. The vest is fleece with a nice mossy oak pattern. This was it, but they are out of stock. http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/cb.aspx?a=39 2494 |

I bought a heated vest that runs on a battery pack, and it said it also works on 12V car systems. So I chopped off the pack and added my own connector, and it works fine! |
