Well I went to reset my tps again because I pretty sure I burned the stock eeprom back to the bike, which negated any tps reset I had done.

I wanted to clean the throttle body first, so i removed the cover and found quite a few grains of sand around the inside edge of the filter and a couple down on the throttle plate. I vacuumed everything out and tried to put some foam on top of the cut air box to add some downward force. Doing that caused me to over tighten the front aibox screws and now I have two sides that are broken instead of one.

Does anyone have a stock inner airbox cover they'd be willing to sell me cheap? This cutup air box that came on the bike doesn't seal the filter tight all the way around. how could it with only being attached at the front and rear.

When I said sand, i mean like beach sand, but slightly larger. Hopefully not that much has been sucked through the motor. Any other ideas for sealing up the filter?

I'd go with a 07+ cover if you wanted to keep some of the airbox open. It's only like 35 bucks.

There you go, just throw it on and ride. It could help actually, seeing how you are more than likely getting TONS more air than the bike would ever require. LOL

Buy a new filter while you're at it. K&N if your wallet allows.

It looks like there is three threaded holes on the top. What are those for? Exhaust servo motor?

I was thinking I could just drill 2 holes in the bottom and top of the plastic air box and use two long bolts with large washers to spread the clamping force. I'd use some flat rubber washers to seal the holes.

You could go that route if you didn't want to spend the money. If it were me I'd just replace that massive fail.

Oh, and yea it's for a servo motor. You and me don't have to worry about that. ; ) xb9 ftw

Thanks. I think i'll just order a new cover and k&n filter. I was planning to get a k&n filter anyway. Hopefully the 07 box will seal better than this hack job.

Is there any place to order the inner air box besides American Sport Bike? I don't really like their shipping charges. They have this at the bottom of the order page, but it's my experience that they charge exactly what the shipping says and I could ship it cheaper via UPS by just going down to staples.

Disregard the above shipping charges! Shipping charges will be determined at the time the box is packed and invoiced, based on package weight, size, and method selected. See the Store Policies page for more details. We charge what UPS charges, rounded up to the nearest even dollar invoice amount. UPS Next Day is NOT cheap, especially for large or heavy items. International orders will use USPS Global Express mail, not UPS. Contact us if you need to know the exact shipping charges prior to completing your order.

I ordered some stuff from them and their charges seemed very reasonable. No Buell dealer close to me, so American Sport Bike is a good option!

$15 to ship a usb cable is reasonable? They want $17 to ship the filter and air box. Based on the usb cable, they should be charging me $35 to ship it ups ground, so I guess you could say it's reasonable.

Please post if you know another vender that stocks the air box. I'm having zero luck on google.

In the old mx days, we used a heavy grease to complete the seal on some bikes.

Send them a email, they are wonderful people and will work with you if you don't want to use ups. (I really hate ups and will not use them if I have a choice)

Use USPS priority.

I like usps priority mail as well. Much cheaper and faster than ups ground. The only problem is my mail lady is lazy and she likes to leave packages on top of my mail box. At least ups will get out of the truck and put it on the porch.

Ha, USPS becomes Canada Post and they deliver to the door or leave it at the station, two blocks away.

UPS, I'm sure doesn't even stop sometimes and leaves it at their depot on the other side of town.

I always specify USPS, to the point of skipping the deal.

So Canada post hands it to you or you have to go pick it up? That's nice to know as I just shipped something expensive to Canada, but usps wouldn't let me do signature confirmation.

You are going to get some sand through the filter regardless. The filter is just that.... A FILTER, it is not a stopper or a blocker. I ran the stock airbox on my 04 XB12R with a Buell Race Filter. Anytime I would open the cover and take the filter out for service there were small particles (including some sand) that got by. Its normal to an extent.

as was stated above, i'm a big fan of the MX style filter seal. a small bead of grease around the top and bottom of the filter will help seal things up and with grease if anything tries to get by the grease helps catch it.

That's another little known advantage of USPS. As the national postal service they "hand off" to the receiver national post office. Your USPS package becomes CP's. The USPS tracking number stays at the border, but the package is then listed on CP's system and it can be tracked from the border to its destination.

Pretty sure I had to sign for my Gretsch.

Sand this size should not make it past any filter. It's not getting through the filter itself, it's getting around the seal at the top and bottom because there is almost no pressure holding the filter down.

I would trash that cover and would never cut one like that anyway. Try cutting slots between the ribs that run vertcal. My 07 12s has 4 from factory on left side, cut 4 on right to match, use grease to seal. This way top remains rigid and still use all snap catches.

Moosetang,
Have you ordered from A.S.B.? When you wrote:
"it's my experience that they charge exactly what the shipping says", do mean that generically, or that WE have done that? Because we don't charge what the web site says. It is only used to specify the type of shipping (i.e. ground, 3 day, 2 day, etc), and the old tech web SW we're currently using isn't properly tied in to the shipping weight and online shipping system. We're working on it.

We don't jack the shipping charges, and I know we don't charge $17 for a USB cable shipped UPS ground. I seriously doubt you could ship ANYTHING from a local UPS store cheaper than what we charge.

Al

How can you write the above comment and then add this below it stating that you are wrong. It clearly reads DISREGARD THE ABOVE SHIPPING CHARGES!
In noway am I trying to belittle you I just have a hard time believing that you read what you copy and pasted below your comment.

Call Al or Joanne if you have a question about their pricing just like it says.

Wantxbr, that is a direct quote from their website. I ordered my ecmspy cable from them (didn't know I could make it)
I'm quite offended that you would even think I hadn't ordered from you Al. My experience means I have experience. Your post prompted me to check my card charges and I stand corrected. You only charged me $11 to ship it. I appologize for not double checking before posting the cost. Why is the final shipping cost not shown in the confirmation email?

Paul,
I only see you here as "Moosetang" and "Paul" and Florida. So it really isn't an easy thing to know if I've shipped to you or not, since we don't track badweb handles. Joanne is doing most of the order entry these days, so I don't necessarily see the order anyway unless there is a tech question as well.

The website sends an automatic order confirmation email, and we send a personal email when we process the web order and advise of ship/stock status. But we still don't have the box packed, weighed and shipping charges determined when we send that email. It's on the invoice you get, and we're happy to send that amount before we charge the card and ship if you ask for that in the order comment.

If we charged you $11, then UPS quoted between $10 and $11 to us.

It isn't the best of systems, we've been working all year to get a new integrated system online. But it's slow going, as that work takes a back seat to order fulfillment and tech support.

Al
