I just saw that my primary is leaking real good; right on the underside of the cover. Its a 2001 M2, and I am trying to find out if there is an upgraded gasket. |

I think the newest factory ones, even for the tubers, are metal. If not, the cometic ones are. The original factory paper ones were problematic for me. |

I just bought one from the dealer a short time ago and it was the metal with a coating on both sides. It was very reasonable and as long you do your part cleaning the surfaces it will not leak (Mine did not). I'm sure you can do it and good luck. |

Oh yeah, no prob with an install. Seems easy. Thanks guys. I haven't really gotten farther than this post but a buddy mentioned doing the shifter seals also at the same time. Are there other ones to do while I have it apart? |

All new HD gaskets are the metal/fiber sandwich. They work great, just used one on Monday. Make sure you get the long bolts back in the right spots and make sure you use a torque wrench. They are 1/4-20 bolts, they strip easily. Brad |

Is the gasket for the 2001 Sportster the same? I figure it is and am going to get one tomorrow at local HD. The local HD dropped Buell products, thats why I ask. |

Well I was going to do it a couple days ago but I am a little stuck. The piece of the shifter assembly that fits over the splined shaft is stuck on there. I was going to heat it up but wanted to see what others have tried. |

Don't heat it up, you'll mess up the seal. Use a small gear puller. Don't try and pry it open a little, it will break. Don't ask how I know that for sure. Go to the car parts store and pick up a battery terminal puller, they are cheap. I have one that works perfectly for the job. Brad |

Bluzm2, the terminal puller worked perfectly! I didn't even know those tools existed. -Was away for a week so I was able to pull the cover off last night. Going to put it back together today. Hopefully it goes back together nice. Anyone know the torque specs for the cover? Also, Do I have to loosen the chain tensioner to re install it?(it came off without loosening the tensioner). Not sure of the torque value off hand but do know it is inch lbs not foot lbs. Big difference! |

My books (1 is a 2000 and 1 is a 2002) They both say 110-120 in. lbs. And I did loosen the chain adj. and it helped to install it but an extra hand may help. Unfortunately I had to do it by myself. Also keeping the gasket in place and getting it into position is real fun. I hope it helps. Let us all know. |

hold the gasket in place with wooden dowel rods. the bolt holes in the case will be guided by them, gasket in place, freeing a hand to guide the chain over the adjuster shoe |

I got the cover on last night. Had a buddy hold the top of the gasket in place. I never had to loosen the chain adjuster. I just pushed the chain up from the bottom as I slid the cover on. Extra hands def made a big difference. Buell Bert, thanks for the torque values. update- all done, quite easy once you get in there. -Now I just have to get that piece on that holds the clutch cable. Doesn't seem like its too big a deal. (Message edited by interceptor on October 28, 2008) |

Hey I'm glad everything worked out fine. I just remembered that it would have taken a lot less time if I would have had a friend to help. Now you can hire your services out in the future and of course at a profit. |
