I just bought my first buell its a 2000 x1, its been well taken care of and i love it and want to keep it a long time. My HD buddies all swear HD oil only, but they make bikes not motor oil. So i was wondering what my best choice might be? |

Harley 20-50, regular old dino juice, Just to make sure you know how to check the oil and change it right, do it wrong and you are going to have an oil geyser. |

Amsoil 20-50 here. It lowers oil temps about 20*. |

The Royal Purple lowered temps in my sporty 10-20* depending on how I am riding it, over the HD oil... Been running M1 in the Buell since day 1, so, I dont know.. Chase |

I switched to Royal Purple 20-50 last weekend and I can now barely get it hot enough to do TPS rest, etc. I had to let it idle for quite a few minutes to get to 100% cold enrichment for the TPS reset. The engine temp (via ECMSPY) right after the ride was around 130C. This is with the ambient temp of around 60-70 and after 20-30 minute mostly highway ride. |

Hhhmm i thought it didnt matter if bike was warm when doing tps reset! Wow thats not bad do you like the oil better now? or did you like the oil before the change? And if so what you using? |

I put syn 3 in mine top and bottom. I would bet ya that any of the ones listed here so far will do you just fine. I knew mine had been run with synthetic in it so I went with the syn 3 from my local harley dealer. |

Sorry about the diversion here.. Preybird1, The engine temp HAS to be at least 150C-160C (cold enrichment @ 100%) before you do TPS reset. Otherwise ALL your fuel map tuning will be out of whack. Trust me on this. Now as for the oil, like Mrsinister said, all of the synthetic oils will do fine specially since most of us change them way too soon...In my case, I really can't tell any difference in engine performance just "feel" a little better if I get stuck in traffic with motor running. |

You should only use the oil I use because it is the slipperiest and coolest running oil in the known universe. I'm not saying what oil it is though... but I will say it has essence of 'snake' in it. |

I believe that HD synth 3 is made by Amsoil. I prefer the Amsoil but any of the good synthetics, Mobil, Castrol etc all offer great protection. With all the Royal Purple accolades floating around, it would be interesting to see some comparison data to back it up. |

A TPS reset synchronizes the throttle blade position within the ECM. It actually does nothing to the TPS itself, instead it resets the ECM to read zero % open at that TPS reading. The engine has to be warm if you are going to data log and make changes to your fuel maps it does not have to be warm to do a TPS or AFV reset! You can download the ECMSPY Buell tuning guide here; http://www.ecmspy.com/tuning_guide.shtml please refresh your memory or gain new knowledge by referring to it before commenting on the FI system! The less misinformation posted the better! I use Mobil 1 20w/50 v-twin in both the primary and the engine.... I doubt Amsoil makes Syn3 oil, it came in 6th in their testing, Royal Purple came in 8th. Mobil 1 v-twin came in 2nd. Good read even if Amsoil put it out.... http://www.amsoil.com/lit/g2156.pdf (Message edited by scott_in_nh on October 01, 2008) |
