Has this already been brought up? Exactly what is the difference between the old FI system and the new one? Seems like they operate on pretty much the same basis, and have the same weaknesses. Why the new version number?

There have been quite a few posts here indicating the bikes with DDIF3 get significantly WORSE mileage than the bikes with DDIF2...

I think DDFI-3 uses a cam sensor as opposed to the crank sensor in the DDFI-2 system, but I'm not sure that's really a big deal or not.

There are also other sensors involved which negate the need for TPS resets, and the computer can now control the idle. Sliht differences, but nothing major I can see.

Not sure why the MPG has dropped so much, though. They must have played with the curves - not sure if by choice or required by the gov't.

I know the the ddfi3 revs a bit higher and the the engine has no timing plate which I guess is the cam sensor crank sensor thing and it has a defouling thingy for spark plugs and no tps resets oh yeah I also here it SUCKS

'08 XB12R here... fourth Buell and the best running one yet. Special OPS exhaust is the only mod. Runs perfect from idle to redline, sounds wicked and hauls A55! Sorry to hear not all DDFI-3 bikes are as wonderful as mine- I could not be happier.

Just having a laugh to be honest I can not say I hear some folks have alot of problwms and some have none. I have an 06 so the only semi problem I have is TPS resets but they are pretty simple I will say I wouldn't mind a couple extra revs though

I also have an '06. I was just curious what they were trying to improve about version 2. I knew about the TPS thing, but that alone doesn't seem enough to justify a whole new system.

My race tuned 04 gets about the same MPG as my stock tuned 08. Go figure?

My '08 runs great!!
ECM's with DDFI-3 take 30 reads per revolution as opposed to 2 reads per revolution of the old DDFI-2 ECM's.

DDFI3 also has more precise fuel mapping.

IF DDFI3 has more precise fuel mapping, why does the MPG suck??

I said more precise, never said anything that the mixtures were better! : )

It has more throttle position and RPM values so it has the potential to be smoother and better running.

The 1125R had slight timing problems that the most recent flash has fixed.
Maybe what Buell learned with that bike can be carried over to the XB's.

On a positive note, it looks like whatever DDFI3 improvements they make can be downloaded onto older DDFI3 versions for all to benefit from.

That's pretty cool!

Emissions requirements got more strict for '08, and are going to get even more strict for '10. I am not sure what the differences between DDFI2 and 3 are, but it would be a safe bet to think that it had something to do with meeting the new requirements.

Has anybody thought about the redesigned bottom end of the 08-09s possibly adding friction for the reduced mpg? They did increase the oil cooler capacity starting in 08.
