Anyone else notice MPG drop with solenoid removal? I reset my average MPG counter every tank. Just sort of a habit, I guess. I have been reluctant to post it since nobody else has mentioned it, but mine was averaging 37-38 every tank for several thousand miles. After solenoid removal, I have not had a tank run average of more than 34 MPG. Riding habits have stayed the same. Only thing I can think of that's not been constant is the temperature for my morning commute is now usually in the 50s instead of the 60s, though I can't imagine that would have a dramatic effect. Thoughts? |

The solenoid has no bearing on fuel mileage. |

I would have thought the same, Krassh. However, I sh!t you not that it happened the very tank after I removed mine. |

I hate to say it but that has got to be a coincidence. The only thing the solenoid does is retard the throttle at a certain RPM in 3rd gear for EPA noise. Unless you boggered something up when you had it apart. |

No change in my mileage pre and post...matter of fact it went up from 29 to 30...but that is due to extended freeway intervals. |

No change in mileage for me after solenoid removal, though the rear AFV did change. I was running 100F/100R before the change - rear cylinder runs at 105 now. First full tank since the re-flash was 40.8 MPG, AFV's were 100/100 after the flash, but rear has adjusted back to 105 since. Jack |

Hook the solenoid back up and see if your mpg goes back up... Z |

I hate to say it but that has got to be a coincidence. The only thing the solenoid does is retard the throttle at a certain RPM in 3rd gear for EPA noise. If its job is to retard the throttle then surely it will use less fuel - now that you are free to use the throttle to its full potential I can quite easily see why fuel consumption would go up ! |

Sportster...Solenoid activates under very specific circumstances and when it does activate, it only affects the throttle for seconds at a time...not enough to affect MPG. |

"Riding habits have stayed the same." So..... you haven't played with the throttle a little bit more? Rob |

Andrew(Ponti1), as you suggested, the cooler air is denser and would require a bit more fuel to maintain correct A/F ratio but, like you, I don't think it would drop as much as you have seen with just 10 degrees difference. I found with my 'noid disconnected and throttles locked I have a tendency to ride more aggressively. Maybe? |

just a thought, maybe the INTAKE SNORKEL is not lined up when you put the air box back together and is restricting the air flow, its worth a check. |

On my trip over to the dealer to get my ECM flash I beat the snot out of the bike and was getting 29 mpg avg. The average trip to the dealer was 31. The trip home after ECM flash was 34 mpg avg. riding even harder than the trip there. |

Regarding this solenoid....is the 1125R louder than the XB12's? (Message edited by boltrider on September 26, 2008) |

So..... you haven't played with the throttle a little bit more? I first thought that was a possibility since I did try a number of times to got WOT and trip the CEL, but have since run several tanks of nothing but steady commuting. Yesterday, I rode to work on the interstate 30 miles after filling up with fuel. Held a steady 75 MPH the whole way there, and read 34 MPG when I arrived. maybe the INTAKE SNORKEL is not lined up when you put the air box back together and is restricting the air flow, its worth a check I'll check the intake snorkel tonight to verify all is as it should be, though I was pretty meticulous when doing the solenoid removal. Like you said, definitely worth a check. |

Ponti1,have you gotten the new remap? My actual MPG went from 31-33to40-43.Feels like a new bike!I haven't yet taken a steady highway trip could get into 48-50 range. |

Dano, not yet. Will be making the trip to Somerset next weekend. Lloyd keeps calling telling me that he is impressed with the result. Also keeps telling me about a customer that had rave reviews...Was that you? Well, checked my intake snorkel and it was fine. While I was in there I checked for anything that looked odd, and also saw nothing. Oh well, not that I bought this bike for MPG anyway. Will go get the reflash and be done with it. |

Boltrider - different solenoid. Yours is in your exhaust, ours closes our throttle butterflies at a certain point (WFO at 4850rpm in 3rd gear). Z |

Solenoid activates under very specific circumstances and when it does activate, it only affects the throttle for seconds at a time...not enough to affect MPG. Yeah, like when I wanted to pass a car. I finally had enough of that shit and took care of the solenoid. Now it does what I want when I want. BTW, I have actually noticed a mileage improvement, but I think it may be due to my riding habits changing more than anything. Went from 28-29 to 31-32. Most of my riding is in the city. I did get 37-38 on a 725 mile trip a few weeks ago. Looking forward to the new map; taking bike in tomorrow for that and other service. (Message edited by chameleon on September 29, 2008) |

Just be glad that BMC handled the noise emissions the way that it did (allowing us to easily bypass it). Honda did it by reducing the max RPM (thereby decreasing max HP) on its 2008 US model CBR1000RR versus its European models. This is because the EPA tests noise at 1/2 the max HP RPM and Honda felt this was the best way to handle the EPA. As much as we bitch about the solenoid, I bet American 2008 CBR1000RR owners would very like to have the solenoid as opposed to dropping the top end HP a bit. Also, it explains why the cutout happens at the RPM that it does on our Buells--that's about 1/2 the RPM of where our motor makes max HP (9,800 RPM). |
