Hello all, after getting a set of broken turn signals donated (thanks Pariah) I was able to tear them open and see what the deal is!
First off I have to say I think they went a little overboard with them. Turn signals can be a simple circuit. They have them regulated, which is necessary for a brake light, but in my opinion overkill for turn signals. But more power to them :-) I'm not sure how the "dead" ones are on the bike, but with 12 volts to both sets the LEDs came on very very dim (would probably have to be in a dark area to notice them.) I jumped each LED at the LEDs input and earth and for some very odd reason the center LED was the only one that wouldnt kick it in high gear! I could bypass the center and get the others to brighten up a bit, but not like they should be. Since both the ones I tested where already dead, I really have nothing else I can test. I'm pretty sure the regulation circuitry is playing some sort of role in destroying the LED. But why its only the center is beyond me! the LEDs are ran in series and starts at one end and ends at the other. meaning the center is not the entry or exit point. I am pretty sure that the problem is with the signals. I don't see the bike being the problem. if the bike did have any odd electrical problems there "safety" circuitry would take care of it. Or at least I would assume it would. I wish I had more experience with this type of LED, as this is really the first time I have even looked at them up close. Not my choice of LED. I think they are just an overall different design, as a normal LED would not work only half ass, it would either be 100% or 0%, never 25% (with direct power) But even after jumping the center LED, the other 2 didnt get as bright as they should, which makes me believe the regulation circuitry is out as well. So with that....... I really have NO clue what the core issue is. I can tell you the end result! haha. My best guess is the regulation circuit is going south and it ends up taking an LED with it. But hell I might be way off! I hope an engineer can chime in as an anony of course and tell us the scoop! Also folks, please realize that these are NOT built by Buell. they are out sourced and its that company that has built the faulty signals....NOT BUELL! They just happened to already have a contract on them. bare with Buell and I'm sure the fix is in the works. Hopefully they ditch that design and go with a better LED. Well I need to correct myself... while looking at it again, when I do jump the center LED, the other two get pretty bright (complete circuit pulls 153 mili-amps, which is pretty high for 2 LEDs!) not sure if the other one I tested had a different issue or not. But it didnt take too long and I blew the circuitry out.....oops! |

Robert, I called Buell today and they did say that a fix is in the works. No other details. FYI, I got both my rear directionals in and when I replaced them the left was dead from the factory. I hope this fix comes soon. I do not want an integrated light, I just want a reliable light. Also, kind of hard to do some electrical troubleshooting without a schematic. But it definitly sounds like a regulation issue. |

I think I'm going to go integrated brake/signal lights... cleaner look, and less stuff to tape up on trackdays! I have a feeling that Robert's signal lights, though integrated, are actually more visible than the stock lights (he uses 18 LEDs versus 3 LEDs for the stock system... maybe not apples to apples, but Robert's LEDs are top notch). Robert: I take it for the 1125R version, we don't need an LED relay? I'm thinking Option 6... |

My taillight from Robert is still working fine. It's the full integrated with a clear lens and it really cleaned up the rear lines. The running light is the "weakest" but is very visible, even in daylight. The brake light is like a red searchlight, very VERY bright. Turn signals are very bright and I think more obvious than stock. No problem understanding which direction is firing. As I've said many times, Robert's light is my best "farkle". Z |

Fireman: I had a DOA factory signal, too. Definitely a QC issue with supplier. I'd like to get an integrated light in addition to the stock blinkers. More indication is better for the stupid cagers. Too bad XB Lights can't pull of my custom design. |

All you need to do is go to lowes or home depot and buy a couple of wire taps (one for each signal). Works great, and is more visible than stock alone. Plus when my stock signal went out, my integrated signals still worked so I still had rear turn signals. |

Helicon, in the instance where you have both the integrated setup and OEM indicators, does the blinker still get faster when the OEM unit dies? Perhaps does the blinker also get slower than normal with both OEM and integrated unit running? |

Ponti, being that the factory unit is an LED setup I did not need an electronic flasher or a relay to slow down the blinking. With just the integrated turn signals the lights still flashed at a normal rate. After putting a wire tap on to include the factory signals ... once again the flash rate was not affected. I'm using the integrated turn signal set up that Al (american sportbike) sells. I took it off of my totaled XB and put it on the 1125 and it works like a charm. I'm sure you would have the same positive results if you used Robert's setup. I'm picking up the 1125R today with the new flash and a new turn signal, so it will be interesting to see if they connected the turn signal via the wire tap. Anyways, I was told by the dealership that this was not the first 1125R they have received with the rear turn signals going out. They even stated that some of the new ones they ordered for replacement were dead out of the box. I guess they took one off a floor model. |

Thanks for the kind words Zac!!! I'm glad its among the best "farkles" You happen to be among the top "customers" I can install a jumper on any light that has integrated signals to run 2 rear sets of signals, the integrated ones and an external set. This way there is no splicing or ugly mess under the seat. and its fully plug and play. Plus its soldered for a better connection then a crimp/splice. And Helicon is correct, no LED relay needed on the 1125 models. The blink rate should remain the same as long as there is atleast one set of signals still working. Chameleon, sorry I can't get that design down for you. It would just end up looking a bit off due to the LEDs I use and the lens. Everything has its limitations :-) I hope you guys see a cure hitting the dealers soon for the stock signals! As i'm sure you will. Personally I really like the look of the stock rear signals. If there wasnt an issue with them going dead, I just might put a set on my XB! But I think i'll rebuild the internals and see how it comes out. Keep it safe! -Robert www.xblights.com |
