Here are some pics of the powder coating my dealer did to my stock exhaust under warranty.

Looks good - but why didn't they coat the very front? |

I might eventually chisel them out like I did out of the stock cans on my '07 KTM 950R Super Enduro. |

I thought the cat was in the fat section right after where the 2 pipes merged... And why coudln't you coat the cat? |

The cat is the unpainted section. Well with just the paint that came stock the cat gets to hot and would affect the paint. Now depending on the temps the powder coating could withstand it might hold up. Doubt they would have had them coat the unpainted cat section under warranty especially if there was chance for the coating to come off. |

I don't know this for a fact and maybe someone who's popped open one of these could chime in. I've heard that the cat in these is little more than just a tube and offers little to no resistance to the exhaust flow. |

I'm almost certain that the cat is the circled part in this pic:
Maybe I'm wrong - it's happened before. In either case, the new finish does look much better. Much more "black" than the stocker. |

Maybe they just did not paint the upper part to not get confused on the ones to install on Cali bikes. Though the first shipment of bikes sent to Cali had the 49 state exhaust on them. Might be right I just assumed. |

Krassh, What exactly was the issue with your exhaust? Chipping, rust, from poor paint or caused by road debris? I would guess the latter would not normally be covered by warranty, unless the paint was not up to snuff. I always thought the area directly behind the front tire would get blasted from debris, but so far mine's holding up. Your can looks good. Too bad they couldn't have done the front part. I'd like to have mine done (even though it's ok at the moment)along with small change to the outlets direction. |

Everyone I have seen out here in California eventually has the paint coming off the welds in front of the tips. Pretty much like this picture of Hwyrangers exhaust. I did not even think they would do anything. Then I was at the dealership and they had another customers bike in with the exhaust off it and the headers off. He had found a fingerprint burned into the header so they had them off to get bead blasted. Also that is when the service manager told me the paint was peeling of the exhaust in the same area as the picture I posted here and they were going to powder coat it under warranty, So when I brought mine in with my laundry list of warranty work they sent mine out to be powder coated as well under warranty.

Might be interesting for someone to take temp readings on both sides of the weld line chosen as a stop point for the powder coat. Nice looking finish otherwise. Shame it doesn't go to the headers. |

krassh do you have your headers coated, they look nothing like the blued and gold colored headers I have. |

Yes they are coated. I mainly did it to try and cut down on the heat and boiling fuel to no avail. If I had to do it over again and still go with coated header pipes I would have went with the black. |

That looks great. I wonder if the cat in front and below the engine contributes to the heat issues? |

Krassh Which dealership did your powder coating warranty work? I too have the very same issue with my 1125r. Also; I am hoping you have some paperwork on this warranty work. That would be very cool. |

Use 3M Metal and Chrome polish and a good cheap shop rag. Turns the factory headers into bright shiny, clean headers. For stubborn spots, use 0000 Steel Wool. Mine look sweet! |

Yes sir I do. www.flickr.com/photos/Orion328/ I just painted my tire lettering too, I think it looks great. I'll try and get those up as well. As for the header polishing, it lasts a long time. if you maintain your bike often as in washing it, all you need to do is reapply a light coat of the 3M to it and do a quick buff. Wrap the shop rag around the entire tube and do the old pull-pull routine. I like the naked look even more everytime I polish them up! |

That does look pretty choice. I was considering the black wrap with black silicone paint on the headers, but I am afraid the heat held in will cause my headers to crack at the flair like they did on my S1W. Hmm maybe I'll have to try some polishing... Tire lettering looks SWEET BTW |

Geforce, I see you have an SS gashog too. How do you like the sts? Tire lettering looks great and you really polish one off well. |

I bought the STS upgraded kit. With the GT-67 Turbocharger, and Methanol injection, FMIC, about 100 yards of wiring and electrical connections to solder. It wasn't a hard install, although I ditched some of their stuff and fabricated my own brackets to facilitate a cleaner install. Overall, I love it! And I also program with EFI Live, which is very difficult and overwhelming at first, if you've never done it, but over time it is a powerhouse of a tool that I love to tinker with. Gas hog you say? I get 20 MPG in town! Course I leaned the hell out of the truck and run minimal boost, but it takes just a few seconds to go from mild to wild. 8 PSI with a full line of methanol behind it will roast the 4 tires in a hurry. Local Hemi guys don't like me :P Sadly though, I don't drive the SS as much since I got this Buell. I'm just waiting for the SS to get jealous and break something on herself for more attention. She looks so sad when I slam on the brakes in the driveway, rush into the garage and slap on my helmet, pull the bike out and zoom off. |

They must have gotten better on mpg over the years. My '03 is like 14-15mpg and no exhaust whistle to enjoy. Years ago some friends of the boss asked if i wanted to run against their suburban/tahoe i forget now. I may be slow and gullible but even i could smell the bait. When they left I got to hear the sts they'd installed. I had a spray on liner applied to the bed shortly after acquiring it. It's a pretty good work truck, not bad on rough cleared job sites and makes for high speed parts runs. |
