I`m having a problem. At first I thought it was fouled plugs. Pulled and they looked a little black..dry not wet. Changer to NGK DPR9EA-9 gapped at .42 and still hav this problem..popping,surging and general crappy running and then it clears up....runs fine. seems like it's on the verge of doing this often. then occasionally it does it. Any sugggestions. It has 3200 miles. Factory race kit. It will not rev over 2-3000 rpm...then all of a sudden it takes off. Thanks for your help.... |

I'd have the dealer check timing (must be set exact to fact. specs) then reset ECM's "TPS zero" value then check for intake leaks. Ride the bike 2500-3000RPM for 10min. This gives you a baseline to start pinpointing problems and this alone fixs most FI problems. |

Check your breather hose commin from the top of your tank to make sure it isn't pinched. Happened to me. |

Try a different set of wires. Some years back one of mine had the resistance way out which resulted in just what you described. Rocket |

I agree with rocket. My 00 X1 ran like that and it turned out to be moisture in the caps. Could be just a bad wire though. Cheap things first ehh? |

Is it showing a trouble code? Sounds alot like the problem that I ran into this last spring. Check the trouble codes. things to look for are the rear head temp sensor, O2 sensor, or ambient air sensor. If it does not show a trouble code for one of these, I would agree with Josh and look at the timing, tps and for leaks. Keith |

Happened to me once when I first had the beloved S1. Turned out to be bad gasoline which had been contaminated with water. Once it was drained and re-filled I never had the problem again. Also, had the tank vent hose pinched too but that just shut the bike off as I was driving. |

Thanks for the help Guys..I will ohm out the plug wires and coils and check for crimps and such in sensor lines...I have had this bike in for a shock recall and thats it. The mechanic mentioned that the ignition module I had had an updated program. I would have to remove it and send it off for recalibration. Think I'll do this and see if it helps. Anyone familiar with a recall on the 2000 X-1 race ECM? The scanilizer tool is it cost prohibitive or just unavailable to individuals? Can I check voltage references on the bike like I do on My Fords? It sounds like the TPS has to be reset by the Dealer. No chance of setting parameters at the house? |

Twisted, you need to look at the shop manual and jump two pins in the data connector under the seat. Then the check engine light will blink the codes to you. To make the jumper use a piece of 18 gauge wire and 2 18 gauge butt connectors. Crimp a butt connector on each side of the wire. The uncrimped side of the butt connectors will fit right over the pins in the data port. If you don't have the manual. I can send you a scan of the procedure. let me know. Matt |

Matt...I don't have a manual. I would be grateful if you could take the time to scan the pins so I can pull codes..Thanks Jeff |

Jeff, To answer your other questions. Yes, you have to have the dealer reset your tps. Why you ask? HD will not release the cartridges that go in the scannilizer except to the dealers. They have us by the short hairs on this one. The service manual will cover most other issues except the above mentioned. It is a real good start for the do it yourselfer or those of us that really have no use for our local dealer. Look over what matt send you, it should answer the majority of your questions. Keith |

DDFI code check here he's missing some images but you can fill in the blank. There wasn't a recall on Race ECMs but they do periodically update the software. |

Twisted, I had a similar breakdown, it was a faulty wire connnector to the rear cyl. fuel injector. Easy way to check this out is to remove the plugs, turn on the ignintion, open the throttle, and crank the engine over. Raw gas should spit out of the plug holes, if one jug is dry, check your wire crimps. Paul |
