I just picked up my bike and what a difference! They replaced the rear turn signals and the instrument cluster. Plus they performed the flash. First of all, when Bobby from service (great guy, excellent service thanks!!!) I noticed that the cluster said neutral. I thought to my self: wtf? don't tell me now it shows the gear you are at? and guess what? it does! Now the display shows the AT on top and the gear on bottom! Oh and the jerkiness is completely gone! It feels so smooth. I love my bike!!

so your original gauge messed up and the replacment one you got was the 09 style? that wouldnt be to bad, but i didnt know it had all the stuff it needed to indicate what gear it was in on the 08's with just a gauge swap.

Don't be surprised if you get the 2009 style. Now don't quote me on this but, I can see why you might get the new one. My bike has only 1400 miles on it now, and already the HUD has moisture in it.

I used to work for Buick, and many times the maker will review dealer reports on vehicles and issues service bulletins and recalls based off of customer feedback. If they went through and said well, if "SAY" 4 in 10 (2008 1125r HUDs are failing) which is a 40% failure rate, we will replace them with new 2009 HUDs. Auto makers and such will do this because it doesn't quite justify a recall. There is a very good chance that "SAY" 60% of the HUDs will never see issues and/or the owners will never report it.

Understand this is all speculation, and in no way reflects any real statistic or ANYTHING ELSE. I am offering an explanation as to WHY you might have got a new 2009 HUD.

The important thing here for all of us is to report any and all defects and misgivings that our girls have. This information is reported back to Buell and they compile it and it is used to determine what recalls and/or services need to be done.

Sooo...if you have issues with your girl, take her in next service and explain what they are. What I do is keep a log and bring it in with me. It's the only way Buell can keep making improvements.

Seriously, I wouldn't report silly things, but stuff that has a habit of repeating itself like the stumbling, HUD, boiling gas, tail light failures, hot/cold starts, dying in town at stop lights. :P

I haven't had all of these issues but the HUD has already made me wonder. And so far I am very very pleased with BMC and my dealership. Every time I go in my Service Manager asks me if there is anything they can send up or do to make my riding experience better. Great community and great fun riding the bike!

I guess all the hardware is there to register the gear you are at. It must be just as simple as software because hen you shift, it takes a second for the cluster to display the gear. It must be just a calculation between the speedometer and the RPM.

I think all that stuff is driven by the ECM. When you put it in neutral, it takes a blink for the N to light up.

that wouldnt be to bad, but i didnt know it had all the stuff it needed to indicate what gear it was in on the 08's with just a gauge swap.

It is all calculated by the ECM based on speed and RPM. It states this in the '09 user manual, and also explains that the gear indicator does have a little lag to it while the ECM runs the math, and pulling the cutch in will give inaccurate readings.
