While riding today, I felt something hit my boot. Thinking it was just "road junk" I paid it no attention. When I got home I found that the outer timer cover for the ignition module had fallen off and more than likely is what hit my boot. Needless to say, I need to get a new one. My question is, are there options for replacing this cover if my local dealer doesn't have a Buell cover in stock (more than likely they will NOT)? Also, I have fashioned a cover from aluminum flashing as a temporary fix. Will this be a problem or will it hurt the ignition module or anything? Any ideas comments would be appreciated. Thanks | ||

Any 2 hole (which they all are) points cover from a Sportster or Big Twin Harley (or Buell) 1973-1999 will fit. Make sure it comes with the 2 mounting screws. Get a gasket for a rain proof seal.$8-$20 aftermarket (IE: Dennis kirk, J & P cycles, etc). If its not gonna rain you can run without the cover, but I wouldnt make a habit of it. Thanks for the info. My local dealer is more likely to have Harley parts than Buell. If I can't get it that way, I'll go aftermarket. | ||

The cover I got for mine was a late model sporty cover that came with some rivets, but I found out the screws are #8-32 x 3/4". Keep an eye on the screws though, even with lock tight they will back out, as the threaded posts that hold the cover are also threaded on. I usually check them every other day or so.I didn't know about a gasket for this cover? It wasn't mentioned in the diagram. (sigh) Been running mine without! | ||

same thing just happened to me today. HD just replaced the rotor assembly, would they have messed with the cover to do any of that work? | ||

There was no reason for them to take off the timing cover to do any of that work. | ||

K. Thx. Heading there now for them to re-check their clutch adjustment, though I'm guessing it's not going to materialize into anything. Nice riding weather though and I'll see if they have a replacement (thought I'm not going to pay $100 for them to put it on). | ||

Flrider7 asked about the gasket. Has this been verified? Or do you have a part number? I am not seeing it either. But I might be looking at the wrong diagram in the parts manual. I am looking at #4 on pages 26-27. Is this correct? I don't see two bolts there though. #11 and #27 on pages 28-29 reference 2 screws and a gasket, but then I don't see the cover in that diagram. Do the two diagrams go together? | ||

Sorry, I apparently never answered about the gasket. The Blast doesnt use a gasket and the stock cover just snaps into place. If you go to a different cover then you need bolts and, if desired, a gasket. | ||

Yes. Picked up the cover today. $5+ bucks. Popped right in. Glad it wasn't a big issue. |
