Back in the days before supersonic flight structural engineers were baffled by the fact that as the plane broke the sound barrier the wings would rip off the fuselage. After yet another catastrophic failure a pair of scientists were in the bathroom washing their faces with cold water and lamenting their failure. The janitor happened to be in the bathroom at the time an upon hearing their quandary suggested that they put evenly spaced holes along the junction of the wings and the fuselage. The scientists laughed and walked out of the room. A couple of months later after yet another failure the scientists were desperate and decided to give the holes theory a try and much to their amazement it worked so they tracked down the janitor to ask him how he know to put holes in the wings to which he replied: Oh, that’s simple – ya ever see toilet paper tear along the holes they put in the paper – nope, never! Always tears somewhere’s else!

There's a joke about female anatomy that would be appropriate but too offensive.

You probably know it anyway.

You don't (and Blake could explain all of this properly) make metal stronger, you reroute the lines through which force acts.

The reduced weight is a benefit.

If you were to look at a part under stress (the part, not you) you would find that certain areas of the piece are not doing anything toward contributing. Great candidates for removal via drilling.

Sheet metal is made stiffer with the addition of holes that have their edges coined, flanged, or beaded.
