Anyone watch the san diego at denver game sunday? What are your thoughts on the inadvertent whistle rule that allowed denver to keep an obvious san diego recovered fumble? Being a denver fan, I'm biased =] | ||

I'm a Giants fan, and I think it sucked for San Diego. The whistle was too early, as far as I could tell. He should have let the play finish out and then blow it. Hell, let SD recover the ball and have everyone run down the field, and then review to see if it really was a fumble or not. I think the officials were just tired after a very long game. That being said, San Diego had quite a few more chances to win the game. They failed to stop Denver from getting into the end zone twice, and then they were unable to make it close enough to attempt a field goal on their last possession. So yeah, the call sucked, but it could have been a nonissue if the SD defense had held the Broncos. | ||

I'm a High school official. High school rule states that you can either replay the down or take the out come of the play up to the inadvertent whistle. This applies to NFL as well. The problem was that Hockily blew the whistle before San Diego recovered. I back judge on Friday nights here in FLA and had a bad one two weeks ago. Threw a flag for pass interference, ball was tipped, and I was looking at the receiver because he appeared to be injured. I laid on the whistle not realizing that the defense picked the ball off. Didn't really matter because the flag would have given the ball back to the offense but none the less it didn't look good at all. I think the officials were just tired after a very long game. That definitely is a factor as well. The game where I had one was one sided and was very boring. Games like that take you out of it. | ||

Firebolt32, I tell you what, you couldn't pay me enough to be an official in high school sports. The parents must be the hardest fans to convince when you throw a flag against their kid or make a tough call that goes against their team. And the fields aren't so huge that the stands are really far away like in the NFL. I don't know how you do it. | ||

High school really isn't too bad. Being a Back Judge I'm in the middle of the field so I don't have to hear much. Now youth football, that's a different story. I work Line Judge which is on the home side and the parents are ruthless. Two years ago we were attacked after a Super Bowl game because the parents felt the refs ruined their perfect season. In the state of Florida it is a felony just to stand in my face and scream at me let alone touch me. Three people were taken to jail for battery and I was put in the back of a cruiser because of kicking a guy in the face for taking my dad down who also officiates. They spent a couple days in jail, I officiated the next game. People actually think that I pick which team will win or lose. I could care less. I'm there to do a job, get paid and go home. Plan and simple. | ||

I used to ref hockey, Pee-wees thru High school. Same thing as Firebolt32. Get it done. It seems the younger the players the worse the parents are. I have called games because the parents were so bad. | ||

Something needs to be done about the "inadvertent whistle" rule. In some cases it renders instant replay useless. It is very frustrating when a bad call can change the outcome of a game. | ||

I think that a little bit of human judgment should be used again in the officiating rules. The inadvertent whistle rule can't be just thrown out, because then you have players thinking "I hear the whistle, but this play could get reviewed anyway so I should keep going and tackle this guy" Then you have more injuries, and can't logically penalize late hits because the blown whistle didn't REALLY mean the end of the play. There will always be close calls and fans who disagree with those calls, but in cases like Sunday's DEN vs SAN game the referee should be allowed to make the correct call. Instant replay has done a lot for making the game easier on the officials and more fair for the teams - but it should be used exclusively by the officials to assist when they need another perspective. | ||

Hochuli's been apologizing for the call. I don't think this is necessarily the right thing to do. He made the call, it's over, and things should just go how they go. But it's gotta be weighing on him... | ||

It's definitely weighing on him. He has been down graded over one bad call. But I wouldn't apologize. It was a mistake...he's human. You don't hear Cutler apologizing to Hochuli for putting him in that position do you? It sucks... | ||

I've refereed a few thousand games of Basketball. (About as many as I played) Never made a bad call. Ever. :-P | ||

I currently spend a few hours on a Tuesday afternoon teaching 10 year olds the fundamentals at the local YMCA. A whistle and the threat of sit ups FTW. | ||

Yep indeedy - hit 'em early - hit 'em quick - stops that coach behavin' like a dick. Which comes from that other old chestnut Experience is a good school - but the fees are high. |
