Look in your owner's manual under Warranty Exclusions. This is from my old Uly. May be different for the 1125R. This warranty will not apply to any motorcycle/sidecar as follows: 2. Which has been abused, misused, improperly stored, used "off the highway", or used for racing or competition of any kind. (Message edited by dentguy on September 15, 2008) | ||

Dumb. Obvioulsy twisting words, but... "Off the highway", you mean like my driveway? "Competition of any kind", like a bike show? By that wording, a track day, being off the highway, would void the warranty. | ||

I found the same language on page 162 of the 1125 manual. So if a guy is going to race there won't be any warranty coverage. Of course this is reasonable. I just don't like it. But if you're only going to do trackdays sounds like you're going to need a lawyer to interpret the warranty your way. | ||

Many of us have run the Buell Inside Pass Track days. Buell has a record of this as they validate you VIN number. I have never heard of any participants having warranty issues. This includes myself as I have had several warranty claims after running a Inside Pass track day. | ||

My first warranty work was on my XB-9 in a track day. Going into Turn 1 at Willow Springs, missed a downshift - false neutral and instead of pulling in the clutch and coasting through the turn, I farcked up and hit the shifter again. DOUBLE DOWNSHIFTED - got 3rd instead of 4th and when I let the clutch out, I spun the engine up to probably over 10K RPM. Since I was there AT the track with the crew from Glendale Harley/Buell, I couldn't bluff them about what/where it happened. Ernie just told me that just getting a false neutral was a problem and that they'd do the warranty repairs. Had bent pushrod, valve/piston collision damage. Took a little time to get it all done as it happened right at the start of their busy season in the shop. All done under warranty. Bottom line, it'll be good if you're doing just a track day. All you have to do is describe the problem and circumstances in which it happened. If you were racing, fuggedaboudit. My first racing wreck, the bike was still owned by the bank and technically under warranty. I didn't even think about trying to get any warranty service. Also, I also cancelled my insurance since the bike was strictly a racebike by then - so I just sucked it up, paid to have it all fixed and got on with it. Besides, in that case, I just fell off... bad judgement wouldn't have been covered under warranty anyways. They don't cover STUPID.  | ||

The solution for me is now clear. Keep it stock, maybe use race line parts (belly pan is on the way) and do only track days. There are a lot more trackdays year round here than racing. This will give a chance to learn and get my kicks. After my warranty is up (or close to the end of it) I can take up racing. The added benefit is that this way it will be easy to keep the 1125 in street shape. | ||

MOST of the above is inaccurate. Priciples of "reasonable and prudent" come into play. Think of it this way . . . . it you beat the crap out of a car, motorcycle or speedboat in competition and then tried to claim a manufactuer was liable and that a failure occured as a result of "improper manufacturer or faulty materials" (what a warranty covers) and you tried to convince 10 folks how many would buy into it? Determining if a bike has been on a race track should be no problem but I am not certain if Buell has the capability. Porsche, for example, records the ECM and a record of "max revs" can be printed. Porsche owners typically request it when buying a used car. I'd say that if I saw one Saturday a month that had runs through the gears to redline, with some nifty downshifts in patterns of about 30 minutes each . . . well . . it certainly would not look like going to Costco in Akron. | ||
