You're correct, but by opening it up at the very end of it's journey, it's already bled off most of it's volume - proven by your marginal increase in sound.
The other large pipe in that same chamber is much earlier in the flow pattern and should let more sound bleed out.

Here it is
It is a 2.5 inch pipe. The little one inch pipes were cut back about 1 inch inside the muffler and the little plate that was around the pipes inside the muffler was removed. It sounds like a big twin now!

Nice mod. It looks (in the pic) like there's not much clearance between the top of the turnout and the bottom of the swingarm. Did you unload the rear suspension to make sure it won't hit the tip when the swingarm's at maximum travel? I'd hate for you to find out the hard way when going over a R/R trestle or other kind of bump that it's too close.
Your mod inspired me. I haven't seen any after market exhausts that look any good. Also the costs of the one available are ridiculously high IMO.
The bike already has plenty of power so I was just looking for a good mod that would give the bike a good old fashion thump sound and cover up some of the valve train noise.
Your mod worked and does everything I was looking for.

The only negative effect of the mod that I've noticed is when stuck in traffic the person on the cell phone next to me has a hard time hearing! Get off the phone and drive! No real problems at this time.
Xbswede, it might be my imagination but it seems like the engine takes longer to slow down when letting off the throttle. I noticed it when shifting a little slow, the RPM don't seem to fall as quick so the shift is a little smoother. Have you noticed this? Like I said it might be my imagination just wondering if you noticed anything. Also my AFV went up some.
Just beautiful. I kinda dig the black, for the same reason that I like black rims. Ideally, I would have brake-dust colored rims. Cuts down on that pesky cleaning stuff.

I was going to say "that Rocks", but my wife said that sounded gay. what does she know anyway. She's walking around the house with a bag on her head from a color wash.
Sounds and looks great. I'm still in the process of trying to buy a stock muffler to cut up as well to see what sound and maybe performance I can get out of it. I'm not willing to cut up the one on my bike just in case I don't like the mods.
I've done everything short of going to the dealership and buying a new one.
Got a question for those who have removed the muffler. Is it hard to remove or reinstall on the bike? I ask because I may have to take it off and put it back on a number of times while making mods until I get the sound I'm looking for.

Actually a K&N is next on my list of things. I am running open air box currently though.
Usmoto- The exhaust is pretty easy to remove. Its putting it back on that can be a hassle the first time. The second time was much easier. The biggest problem I had was getting the front left bolt back on because there is not that is not secured to the muffler like the other three are. This means you have to balance the nut on the end of the end wrench and stick it through a small opening up front and try to align with the bolt as it goes through. This took me forever the first item I had the muffler out. The second time it only took me about a minute to align.
Chevycummins was pretty accurate on his time estimate of 3 hours for the whole mod. It took me 4 hours but that's because I let the paint dry for about an hour and had dinner before putting back together.
Probably about 10 minutes to remove and 15-20 minutes to put back on.
I took a torch to a 13mm combo wrench. Bent the box end 90˚. Put a piece of black electrical tape on the wrench, load the nut and tighten.
I may donate the wrench to the Buell mechanic at work. He has pulled the muffler on a prototype with the small oil cooler, but not a production model yet. Loretta is almost back together and goes in for warranty cam replacement tomorrow.
Loretta sounds a lot like Xbswede's vids, not much metal left to trim in there.
The K&N filter was 33-2207 and I did the same mod as the first guy that posted about it. I cut between all but the last 6 pleats (folds) and it fit nicely. I also did the solenoid mod at that time. Definitely more noise up top, and I'm glad the airbox cover is there or I'd fear for my life on getting sucked into the throttle bodies.
Since were talking k&n .I wanted to give my recipe.Take the old air filter off and cut the paper plete of the rubber and leave the old screen /rubber carcause.Buy the cheapest k&n filter and cut the excess rubber off the fit your original filter carcause.RTV the two together.I found this was the best method that way your using the original seal and there is no flaws in the seal in the air box.Thats what i was worried about.I found lots of little pebbles in my box.
Now for the pipe i got kind of tricky yesterday and did a little hacking myself and well boys I think I topped ya all.I integrated the 3"elbow in the pipe .where the two pipes meet to a 3inch at the end of the pipe not hanging off the end of the pipe i will post pictures soon.My cousin knows more about that.It sound awesome It was a little loud a first I then toned it down with a little diamond shaped screening i bought at home depot.I will show pics of the k&n also.
Pay no attention on welds they need polished up a bit with a grinder.I didnt want to get far into it until I know i like it that much to polish her up.She sounds deep similair to the you tube in this forum .But not as raspy.As you can see i Added some screen mesh to quiten her down a little and it worked great.I will ride it today and see if i like it enough to even spray paint it.
