if you've stood here, next to a Top Fuel nitro motor when it's spun up, you know how incredible these moments are.

i was holding my breath, ear plugs pushed in tight, holding my camera over my head and shooting blind.

when they "seat" the clutch, just before shutting the engine down, the percussion actually pushes on you and moves you backwards.

they estimate these engines put out over 8000 horsepower.

i don't know about that, but i do know that getting this stuff on you during the pit walk on Sunday morning is a huge rush.

there is NOTHING like the smell of nitro in the morning.

for the second race in a row, John Force didn't qualify, an unprecedented occurrence in his legendary career.

as such, he pinned his hopes this weekend on his Funny Car teammates, including daughter Ashley Force.

i was there in Seattle in 1995 when Ron Capps notched his first Top Fuel event win. it's always fun to watch him race. that's Mrs. John Force looking on in the foreground.

this is very cool.

that's the North Carolina chapter of Rolling Thunder finishing a "Missing Man" formation parade lap of the zMAX Dragway, in honor of America's POW's and MIA's.

the crowd on hand was very appreciative and supportive via their cheers and applause, and Marcus Smith, General Manager of Lowe's Motor Speedway, spoke to the fans for the only time today, to express his thanks and appreciation for these guys' and gals' efforts, and for our country's fighting forces past and present.

this was VERY cool.

There is NOTHING like standing in the pits next to a top fuel car doing it's drivetrain warm up.
The throttle snaps will drop you to your knees if you are not prepaired.
Even then you cannot help but flinch.

The sound pressure level generated when two of those cars leave the line MUST be experienced at least once by ANY motor head.
The ground shakes, the air pulsates and the grandstands shudder.
You can feel it in every pore of your body. Every sense is assalted. Hearing, touch, smell, sight. Everyone of them.
The first time you see it, your brain refuses to believe what you eyes and every other sense just told it.
Total sensory overload.
If you are close to the track, they take off from the line SO fast, you almost cannot turn your head fast enough to keep them in your field of vision.

It's been a few years since I've been to the drags, I gotta go next year.
There truly is nothing like the smell of nitro in the morning!

Jerry, yes they really do put out around 8000 HP. That's about 1000 HP per cylinder for a 500 CI motor. Unreal.
