here's the problem. The cooling fan is not coming on. The history is this.
The exhaust straps failed and the exhaust dangling from the header pipe's broke the exhaust downpipes. The Lambda sensor boss blew out of the rear pipe causing exhaust gases to blow over the fan and Sue's right leg. That's when she noticed the problem and stopped. To fix the problem, which included three broken exhaust studs, the engine had to come out and the heads taken off to be machined. Everything was put back together and seemed to be working properly. However, the fan doesn't run.
I fitted a new fan, on the basis that the hot exhaust gases flowing over the old one didn't do it any good. No change. I used ECM spy to run a diagnostic on the fan, it runs for 50% of the run then stops (hi speed only). If I ground the temperature sensor on the rear cylinder head it runs for 10/15 seconds then stops. It will only do this once, to make it happen again I have to turn off the ignition and turn it on again. The rear temperature sensor gives the correct reading on ECM spy. |

Check the wiring resistance from the engine temp sensor connector back to the ecm.
The specs are available from an XB service manual which can be found online.
Would pay to also check the temp specs while you are there as it may have shifted and is not reading the correct values. |
