I've had a small rocker cover leak for a while and been hoping to save it for winter but this week it started puking oil all over(just after changing to a NRHS intake and Drag specialties breather setup). I just picked up a gasket set PN17036-91A at the local H.D. dealer. Does anyone have any tips/tricks that could help me out? Would you use all the gaskets in that set? Thanks |

I would switch to XB rockers if it was me, one less part to leak, They should drop right in. but that is me.... not sure on the PN# but you got the metal gaskets, right? The others paper ones are junk IMO. YES USE THEM ALL!!!! They install with the stamped in numbers readable side up and no sealants needed. taking you time and cleaning the surfaces on re-assembly will make it a one time fix. Make sure you know the tork specs too....Very Important!...Hint Hint..Service MAnual!!! Drilling out the return oil passages to 1/8" is worth the trouble while you have the covers off. It isn't all that hard. and will make for a happier/cooler engine. Did you get new torx bolts? I would replace ALL of them as they are known for crapping out also. Especially the 3 lowers. Cheap insurance if you ask me..They may not even come out in one piece... DID I mention....Get a service manual? That is your best friend for a first timer doing this. should take roughly 3-4 hours taking your time and doing it CORRECTLY the first time around.... By the age of the bike you may want to go ahead and replace the intake seals if you did not already do it when you did your mods. At least check them w/ some carb cleaner to make sure of no leaks. Funny them M2's are. All i think of when I see them are Gaskets, gaskets, gaskets!!!! You can be sure of one thing with them bikes.......They're gonna leak!!! If I were you I would buy them ALL now, do them ALL at once, and be done with it for a looooong time.....Rockerboxes, cam cover, primary chain cover, pushrod tube o-rings, intake to head, intake to carb. You will not have another leak on that bike for years to come if you do..... Good luck and post up if you need some help.... (Message edited by firebolteric_ma on September 11, 2008) |

dustin ditto what eric said, will save you a lot of grief - all your paper gaskets will go, and when they do it's plain ugly that 17036-91a is top end gaskets, should be metal head gaskets and rubber rockbox gaskets - if you spend another 80 or so should get you xb set-up, i did this years ago and am glad i did. |

I found my manual!!! Is the XB setup just the covers? Do you have a PN I should use? For the extra 80$ or so I'll do it. Since I'm going to be doing the work in my dining room, I'll definately do them all. Hopefully won't miss much ride time.Thank you both. |

here's a thread from the kv from when i did mine: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/384 2/174377.html?1120500593 there's a parts list in there somewhere, all parts should still be active and available, it's an easy job, the only special tool you'll need is a cut down allen key. |

Anyone know a shop that would have the parts for the XB conversion IN STOCK? It seems like every time I need something NOW, I have to hurry up and wait. They always have plenty of H.D. boxers though. |

Don't write it off quite yet there Scott. The weatherLADY just remarked that Saturday will be the drier of the weekend.I'll watch the weather tomorrow morning (very early) before writing it off.The weather at the moment should pass.I'm optimistic. PitBuell...I have a '99 X1 and my stock rockerboxes have given me NO trouble after upgrading to the "Metal" gaskets from the old paper ones. The one that leaked was between the bottom slice of the rocker between IT and the head. Unless you are burning to spend money, just replace with the superceded gaskets. There....I said it (Message edited by ducxl on September 12, 2008) |

Good point, don't know why I'm always burning to spend money, sure is fun though. If I can't find them it'll give me something to do in the winter. I just got the bike into the dining room, the wife isn't home yet. She's gonna love this... |

Does anyone here have the Lightning Long touring seat that would be willing to let me put it on my bike for a few mins to see if I like it sometime? The touring seat is supposed to be 1" lower than the stock Ss seat, BUT I have an '09 Ss which has the STT suspension and the same seat height as an '08 Ss. So I'm curious to see if my stock seat is the same height or if the touring seat WOULD be 1" lower on MY bike (which is what I'm hoping). I'm pretty sure my seat is not the same as the standard '08 Ss seat... it doesn't feel like it has the gel pad that the '08 I sat on had. |

I don't like the breather filter that I have now and the upgrade would fix that. At idle it sounds kind of like tweeting birds. I just tried to upload a pic but apparently it is over 71 whatevers so the badweb won't let me. ideas? |

Don't listen to Greg,,,He is the Anti-Upgrade Type But,but....i upgraded from paper to metal I had money burning a hole in MY pocket last year.Motorcycle projects are fun.But as Eric said recently something about having a spare bike to keep you from being bikeless while the project progresses. In all seriousness, the XB rockerboxes on the older Tuber is supposed to be best. Tomorrow? If it happens? Say,9? Looking at the forecast it now looks bad |
