I've seen many, if not most, of the scoot manufacurers, come up with instrument packages that include a mix of analog and digital guages (digital as in display the value in digits , as opposed to digital control of a needle). I just don't care for the digital seep readouts I've ridden behind. Now, I'm well aware that some of my preferences are based on comfort gained through long use, but I seem to remember a Navy study some years ago (submarines?) that dealt with the ability to gather data from a quick scan of instruments, and round, white faced gauges with black marking and a sweeping needle came out on top. Anyone else remember such a study? gathering data from a quick scan is pretty much what I'd like to do with the tach and speedo on a bike. | ||

I've read similar studies, pics on the guages as well. It takes longer to analyze graphic and text than graphic only. One reason why ananlog is still popular in aero as well as nautical. Plus idiot lights are still a fave. My concern is are they readable in bright light or will the glare be a problem? Anyone with a bicycle computer knows what happens to the display when it's been in the sun too long. | ||

Tach - Must be visual Speedo - who gives a sh1t about? Health meters (temps, pressures, etc) - my jury is still out I've used digital guages in racing and generally set them up to BLINK when I gotta worry about 'em. Means I don't even really need to SCAN. Keeps me focused on hunting down the next producer of castor fumes. As an example, on the 2 stroke Honda 125 in the kart, my EGT is set to warn me at around 1300F (I get best performance around 1250) and water temp warns at around 180 or 190 - I don't remember now. Like Newfie says, nice big anolog guages. As the needle sweeps, you can still tell about where you're at. With digital, you can't read it at all until it stops moving. One of the magazines said they wished the Firebolt had a digital speedo, like an R6. They said the guages on the 'bolt "look like they were subbed out to Fisher Price". Wake-up, Fisher Price went digital years ago, 'cause it entertains the children. I don't need to be entertained, I want information, NOW! | ||

Although, I do like Sarodude's answer on the speedo...how fast I'm going dosen't really matter, as long as I'm going as fast as I possibly can! | ||
