Hello I am new here and indeed to Buell. I have been dreaming of getting a Buell for quite some time and finally a week ago I managed to get a used XB9R, which I hope to drive for a season or two to confirm if I should go for a brand new Buell I think so and I hope so... However I am very worried right now because when I washed the bike earlier today I noticed a bit of smoke coming from under the engine (right side of the bike - above the exhaust). I have attached the photo here and hope you can see the smoke.... The smoke was accompanied by a slightly seething sound. The bike was not warm and had not been driven before the wash off... Is there a weak spot in the electric wiring in that spot? The bike has an alarm, but it should have been done correctly by the dealership... What to do?
Also I have two simpler newbie type of questions: 1) What is the normal oil consumption for a XB9R? I have done about 700 km on mine and have noticed that it seems to drink a quite a lot... I have added 0,3 litre of oil to the bike (which was on minimum when I got it)... is that normal? 2) I have noticed that sometimes the netural gear is hard to find. It sometimes takes a bit of fiddling about sometimes - is this normal or an early sign of gear box problems? Thanks for having me Anna |

Good observation. There is in fact a weak spot in the wiring there, the infamous "77 connector". It connects the stator to the voltage regulator. But I don't think it would have power when the bike is not running... unless maybe there is an issue with the voltage regulator as well. Anyway, I think the 77 connector is right under that sprocket cover and is easy to get at, so that is worth looking at. |

Adding to what Reep said, unswitched battery main fuse power goes through the '77' connector to the VR according to the main harness schematic. Most likely there are wires with insulation worn and touching under the cable ties in that area, causing enough battery drain to keep it from starting. If you can afford it, get a factory service manual for your year XB9R. The identity of the '77' connector can be found in those pages. Regarding oil consumption, be sure to check it the same way each time because the oil level on a cold engine should indicate a lower level than when the oil is at normal temperatures. So, check it after a brief 10 minute warm-up ride, on the side stand with engine off. |

Also nuetral is hard to find on the 03's and infact just about any xb9. As far as the gauge sweep not happening if the bike is in gear they will not sweep until the clutch is pulled in this year model has a kickstand safety switch on it. |

ok, so why were you washing it in the first place? They are supposed to be "dirty" and naked. |
