Alright Z, today im grinding off the original tips, going to shape and weld either an oval or round slash cut style there instead. While the stockers are off going to really get a look at the inside of that third chamber... wish me luck

My Saron arrived yesterday. I'm hoping to get it installed in a week or two, depending on work. Oh, and that whole dead bike problem.

Going to open mine up today. Thinking of just removing the two smaller pipes that join the the center chamber ??? Wish me luck!! If all goes well I will post the whole deal later.

All,
I flip the "mirror" image so it's a little easier to view.

Zac4mac - you won't happen to have a sound clip after you drilled out the tips? (Or anyone else?) Also is this a 49 state muffler? I'm guessing on the Cali version the "cat" is in the first section just as the pipes enter the muffler. I'd like a muffler that had the oval tips exit on both sides like on the XB12R race can.

Well I just removed the two smaller pipes that connect to outlet in center chamber....also opened up the inner larger pipe of center chamber. Its back on the bike and the sound is almost the same. I was afraid to remove to much but I think the outlet size will have to be increased to really get more sound out of thing.I will try again next week.Stay tuned , I will post pics when I figure out how to shrink em down.

alright, cut the aluminum tips down to 1/4" removed "inner" tips completely, and drilled out almost ALL of the two pipes in that final chamber. Sound is MUCH better, especially at full song. Thnx to all for the pics. Z always great to have someone ready to take the plunge, thank you.

im not that technologically advanced.... just imagine same stock tone, a little deeper and louder. I also opened up the intake so I'm not sure if that will affect sound that much.

Alright, have about 400 miles on the "new" exhaust. Bike sounds much better now, deeper rumble with a higher pitched scream at the top end. Absolutely no difference in performance from my butt dyno. This is strictly for sound. I cannot hear the valvetrain AS much as I used to. Gf says it sounds more like a sport bike now, and now like a bucket of bolts smashing against each other. Guess that has to be somewhat of an improvement. Working on a video camera to get some sound for those that are interested. Thanks again to everyone helping w/ pics and ideas.

Do you mean "now" or "not" like a bucket of bolts smashing together. I wouldn't think bolts smashing together would be the sound someone is looking for- unless they were diagnosing a bike with catastrophic engine failure.

Just trying to hear the exhaust note instead of the valve-train.

So, are you all pulling the can off to drill it out, or is there some other means to get in there without the swingarm in the way?

I think I could drill out the lower outlet while still on the bike, but it looks like the upper on will be blocked by the swingarm.

I need to get some longer drill bits to tell for sure. The standard length bits I have now seem to not be deep enough.

I've got a long shaft carbide burr that I used for porting (iorn)heads on a previous project. They're about 1/2 inch in diameter, and rounded on the end. Might be a good tool for this operation.

Yeah, that should work well, Pridayr.
After drilling mine, I've gone in with a 1/2" rat-tail file running CCW in a drill.
Now I am using a coarse stone and a Dremel flex-drive to open it more.

I wish I had an old flex-drive, the new ones are too fat...

All of this muffler talk has had my brain churning about this bike.

I have an idea for a muffler in my head - just need buy the stainless to try it.

Sorry, NOT like a bucket of bolts. After cutting my tips down I can "tune" the sound without removing the pipe b/c of the greater angle I can get into the end of the pipe. I just used a half inch bit and may now start with dremel bits.

zac,

Today i jused the old flex-drive... (-;

So after the headers it's one big room where the air can flow free..

after this it go's directly to the small chamber to the other rooms.. I have to put a lot more fuell from 3000 to 500 RPM in it. And took here for a drive also today.. Men it's pulling hard now all the way..

Took the catalyc converter out and welded it together.. I am not a welder so.. it's closed..

I mapped it again and have now 144 HP and 118 NM of torque and it pulls like hell..

I used the old flex-drive and just cut it in the front open after the 2 pipes coming in.. opened the first part for 50% an took everything out of the first chamber.. There is a steel catalyc converter in it with a system with some small holes.. I am wondering how a US spec exhaust looks like, and still want one to test it.. I believe the US spec has 1 Big pipe coming for the headers to the first room. (this part i took it out

I can only say it's good I did this I get more respect for the people of Buell who developed the exhaust.. smart people..

The sound is a little louder but not much louder

Zack3g,

Let me know if you still want to part with the stock exhaust after you get the Saron installed.

Pa - I would try putting a hole in other large diameter pipe in the second to last chamber. The hole you put in the top means the sound needs to travel to the last chamber, out of the first big pipe, into the other big pipe, and then back into the second to last chamber.

I would have thought removing the two smaller diameter pipes in that chamber would have done a lot. I likely won't be messing with my stock muffler given all this info.

I think the "flow" actually is designed to circle around back into the center chamber where the two small exit pipes are. This is why I did not remove anything other than the last portion of the bigger pipe. Im only guessing??
