How does it affect your life? It doesn't... yet. In fact, none of us is likely to live long enough to see any tangible benefit from this. Our great-grandchildren, though, will enjoy technologies so advanced that finest stuff we have today will seem like crude rocks and sticks by comparison. The research being done at this facility will ultimately affect darn-near everything and everyone. Computers and other electronics, materials, engineering, medecine--all could be radically transformed and advanced by the experiments being run at CERN. |

What's the payback? A bunch of nerdy scientists learn some new equation? Big freakin' deal. How does this thing affect life in any way? It's atomic physics, it has a lot of potential relevance to your life. 1 - It's what makes atomic bombs work. It pays to keep up here, in case something is discovered that makes a new kind practicle. You really don't want someone else finding this first. 2 - It could have applications in Nuclear Fusion. That would really be an important development in the energy field if it did. |

My question is: if you are about to be eaten by a black hole, is it better to hold your breath? This is the best explanation I have found (also everyone interested in space stuff should bookmark universetoday, I have been following it for years): http://www.universetoday.com/2007/05/10/maximizing -survival-time-inside-the-event-horizon-of-a-black -hole/

Thanks Hex. It seems that it is just best to fire the jets for a bit away from the the center of the hole once across the event horizon(a movie that probably earned a 0.5 on the Aragon scale) and then enjoy the descent - no breath holding. Hmmm - spaghettification to a particulate singularity. |

Ok, here's a really really weird way of looking at it. As you get sucked into the black hole, you approach and achieve light speed. So relative to everyone you left behind, you live longer because in normal time frame they have died. |

yes, December 21st 2012 to be exact This may be a coincidence but if you actually read the article referenced in this thread you'll see the scientist who is making the doomsday claim said, "Nothing will happen for at least four years,’ he said. ‘Then someone will spot a light ray coming out of the Indian Ocean during the night and no one will be able to explain it. Last time I checked 2008 plus four is 2012 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

I'd like to watch the world get sucked inside out. Try watching the Hallmark Channel for 6 hours, same effect, less hardware involved. |

Or Life for that matter. From what I read, the Mayans don't predict the end of the world. If I remember right, it's when their calender starts over. It's more akin to a new beginning... It's been a few years... |

I have always liked surprises but this is on the edge of being a little intense. To make matters worse I am having a hell of a time finding any Sam Adams Octoberfest so I can't even enjoy the beginning of the end. To be honest even though it would be way over my head I would love to be there to watch, help, etc. If it is going to gobble me up then get it over with and learn something in the process. |
