SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (AFP) – A motorcyclist was killed after losing control of his bike at 385 kilometers (239 miles) per hour and crashing on Utah’s famous Bonneville Salt Flats, authorities and reports said Thursday.

The American Motorcyclist Association said in a statement on its website that 49-year-old Cliff Gullett of Montana was killed in an accident during a time trial at the location, around 185 kilometers (115 miles) west of Salt Lake City.

The AMA said Gullett was competing in the 500cc class during a time trial speed racing event when his bike crashed. Reports said Gullett was aiming to set a record for the fastest two-stroke, two-cylinder motorcycle.

The Salt Lake Tribune cited police investigators as saying Gullett was travelling at 239 miles per hour before the crash.

The Bonneville Salt Flats have been used as a speed testing ground since 1896 and became famous in 1935 when British motorsport legend Malcolm Campbell broke the world land speed record at the site.

May he rest in peace.

Sucks to hear that.

Dosen't Buell hold the record for fastest 2 stroke 2 Cyl with the RW750?

Rest in Peace. NEVER like to hear of another motorcyclist death, no matter what ride he/she has. Hopefully its the way he wanted to go.

I'm not linking it - but the crash is on You Tube.
Death wobbles, High sides and the bike catches up with him.

Guys, I was there and saw it all from 3 mile start, very ugly crash of a streamliner, not a sit on bike. He was on record return run and just crossed timing lights at 234 when it all went wrong. Liner was in air and pencil-rolled several times coming apart from what I saw. He was fatally injured. The next day Timbo Horton crashed in front of our pits breaking an arm and hand. Very sobering.

Yep - The 240 mph crash on you tube is Jason McVicar - Bonneville & SCTA - Speed Week 2008. He survived.

Jim:

Any word on Timbo's condition? Likely one of the nicest guys to ever ride at Bonneville. Very sorry to hear this stuff.

Thanks for the update.

Court, only heard he had surgery on hand/arm, nothing more.
Jason not only survived, he was injured less than Tim was and was racing at meet, went 244.

Timbo Horton had 8-1/2 hours of surgery to his arm after being airlifted to Salt Lake City hospital. I'm getting contact info now. Be cool if we could get some cards on the way to him. . . about as nice a fella as you'll ever meet.

Sad to hear of all the bad...
Bonnie seems to be a harsh lady this year.

Timbo IS one of the nicest guys you could ever meet and a great guy to go riding with.
I hope he gets well soon.

There will be soon. I spoke with him today. He hopes to be home, perhaps by Wednesday.

We need to find a point person willing to receive and deliver cards and goodies.

Court,
Bennets speed shop is planning a party for Tim when he gets back. Tims brother Chuck has volunteered to be the point man. Aaron has Chucks phone number if you need it.

The guy that was killed was supposed to bring that bike down to the high school I work at afterword. His daughter attends our school, and he has been down on a number of occasions showing the different bikes he's raced on the salt. Very sad deal, but he did go out doing what he loved.
