Well guys after my last post, you convinced me to try a tuber to go with my XB. Rather than buy a running bike I decided to save a bike from being parted out.Hence the Buell in a box. I am now the proud owner of 1" do it yourself kit 2001 X1." The bike had 7535 miles on it and broke an intake valve on the rear cyl.It was destined for the parts bin but I decided to give it a new lease on life. I could use any pointers as to what to look for during the rebuild."things that should be inspected and or replaced as a matter of course" As I will be doing all work myself.Anything that should be upgraded while apart. I will post some before pics as soon as I can figure out how and will chronicle the rebuilding process. Thanks in advance for any input. |

Congrats! Any idea on why or how the intake valve broke? |

Very Cool!!! The reason why I bought most of the Buell's I've owned was to save them from becoming choppers. |

Hi, hey thats great your taking the time and effort to build up your own bike. I have a 2000 X-1 w/ 27,000 miles and its always run great. Here is what I suggest: - updated bronze helical oil pump drive gear. These can shatter (did on my S3T) and ruin your cams and oil pump. - updated primary chain tensioner, if 2001 does not have it - race ECM and slip-on pipe, if not already done -I like the supertrapp or vance and hines - jet hot coat the header pipes, if you want something different than the stainless look - anything else you do to motor would be optional, up to you! Good luck, keep us posted! Christian |

Not sure why the valve broke. It was the rear intake valve and it broke right at the bottom of the keeper groove. The engines internals all look good.Cam bushings show no wear and the cams themselves look fine. I have ordered the parts to rebuild the top end.All valves and keepers."Don't trust the others now" 2 new guides,1 intake seat,Complete engine gasket set and of course a service manual.I would like to find a std, bore cyl.as one has a scrape up at the top from the valve. I will also get the replacement bronze oil pump drive gear. The bike already has PM wheels,Vance and hines exhaust, with the race ecu. |

I've seen that happen when a motor gets revved to high on first start-up before the oil has got to the top end. Sure sign of dummy driver. |

Well ,now the fun begins.I have rebuilt both heads.1 new valve seat,4 new valves and retainers and 2 guides. I have bored the cylinders to .010 as 1 had a nasty nick in the ring area from the dropped valve. So today the rebuilding process begins. I checked out the bottom end and everything looks great,so I will cross my fingers and see how it goes. I figure the valve failure was from over revving the engine. I also must have bumped my head in the garage as I have bought another X1 to go with this one. This one suffered a slagged down piston on thr rear cyl. after a very hard 200 mile ride in the Ca. summer heat. |
