If anyone has a stock muffler for the 1125 they'd like to sell or give away, let me know.

I have an XB rear silver rim in excellent condition that I'd be willing to trade for it.

usmoto@rocketmail.com
Thanks

9-2-08: I've got a buyer for the rear wheel so it's no longer available.

If you had a matching front wheel I'd give you mine, only have 5 miles on it.

I'd dearly love to lay my hands on one too. I've just fitted a Remus on my 1125 and it sounds dreadful. After waiting 5 weeks for it to be delivered, I'm really disappointed with it. Seems like Erik got it right first time. Gone is the lovely pipe/airbox howl and it's not been replaced with a boomy Duc/TL sound, or even, more surprisingly anything that resembles other Rotax 'V' twins.

If someone has a Saron they do not want I will trade my stock exhaust and some $ for it.

I have a stock exhaust on my bike now. While I am happy with the performance, look and sound of the stock exhaust, I also wonder if I could get just a little more rumble out of it.

I'm very reluctant to get an aftermarket exhaust because quite frankly I haven't heard or seen one I liked yet and I haven't seen or read much in the way of performance gains. I also happen to like the way the stock muffler completes the bottom of the bike.

This is an extra research project for me. I'd like to see if I can get both a deeper tone and maybe some more hp out of the stock muffler. If I can't, oh well. Buell has delivered a very impressive package with the 1125r right out of the box.

So if anyone has a stock muffler they'd like to part with just let me know.

I have , progressively, opened my OEM can at the exit tips.
I'm tapping into the 3rd chamber of a 3 chamber system.

The sound is getting to the point that it drowns out the valvetrain.

I'm going to open it to the max tomorrow and see if it's finally loud enough.
Now, it has a decent rumble at idle, but doesn't sound right when I rev it.

At first I really didn't like the OEM can, but after seeing the first round of Aftermarket stuff...

Buell Engineers kick as$.

Pictures at nine.

I still think the stock can in a gloss black powder coat is the ticket.

Biggest drill I have was 5/8", after that, it's been a 1/2" rat-tail in a drill backwards(CCW).
I'm going in with a Dremel w/a flex-drive and stone in the next day or so.

It's close to the sound I want.
Performance? Virtually no difference.

Looking at the welds makes one wonder if the bike was once intended to have a pan at the bottom covering the muffler?

Looks cool Zac. I'd like to get a deep throaty sound out of it. The closest thing I can relate it to is a Mustang GT with an aftermarket exhaust. Not a loud tone but a deep performance type rumble. Of course I'd accept any increases in performance as well.

I've got a post in the wanted section of the classifieds so we'll see what happens.

How far back in are the plates you are drilling out? Will a standard length drill bit do the trick? Also, were you able to drill them out while the can was on the bike, or did you remove it first?

Can you to much or go to far and create a loss of performance?

You have to be very careful to NOT pierce the outer skin.
The can is at least two layers of thin sheet that can flex to help absorb the energy.
The OEM muffler is an acoustic engineer's wet-dream.
I now understand why the welds look so ugly, the metal's about as thick as a tomato sauce can.

NO packing, just applied acoustics - Helmholz chambers and flexing walls/variable volume.
I'm tapping into the last resonance chamber, not really affecting the flow or anything that affects performance.

I'm afraid if I mess with it too much, it'll be like throwing salt in a bubble-bath.
I recall a line from an early Anony post that said something to the effect - Two small outlets were quieter that one large one.

I'm trying to go towards the "one large exit" idea.

Zac, just an idea but I have been toying with the idea of replacing the twin pipes with a single outlet. Wondering if I should start the single outlet on the side of the exhaust where the twin pipes "start". Grinding off the old tips tomorrow.

I'm opening mine from the inside.
The outer skin is thin and fragile, be careful.

I tore the skin already in one spot, tried to weld it, made it worse.
Had to silver solder the holes, it seems to be holding up well.
Glad BMC used mild steel, it solders well.

So all your cutting is from the outside in? just curious as your deeper into yours than i am in mine so far. Also it "seems" like the metal around those tips is thicker than the rest, have you seen the inside of them yet? I am assuming that by replacing the twin tips/twin pipes inside the exhaust and replacing would lead to a deeper resonance in one larger pipe/outlet.

Here -I took these shots at Homecoming.
First a cutaway of the muffler.

A close-up of the exit tips

This is where I have removed metal

The tips are layered too, you can see it on one of mine.

Alright, from those pictures, the whole back half of the dog bone looks like its there simply to quiet her down. I'm not an exhaust specialist but the holes seem to function simply to break up the noise waves coming through those mini exhaust pipes. That might be why drilling through the insides is allowing more sound, b/c your allowing unfilitered (through the holes) air to get into the tips before exiting the exhaust. Just an idea though, im not on any level an exhaust designer. Thanks for the pictures Z.

No, I didn't get a shot of the front chamber.
I was concentrating on the area I had already started modifying.

I looked and couldn't find any from the other cut-aways I'd seen.
