Up here in Calgary, they're now pretty sure there will be Pro Twins class next spring at Calgary International Raceway. Buells and Ducatis including 748s. I'm not too sure of the horsepower limits or other technical requirements (well, I'm pretty sure you'll have to have two jugs). It should be interesting: the front straight is real long (it doubles as a drag strip), and the 748s will really be winding out, I'm sure. I think some tube-frame Buells will be showing up. John E. P.S.: Rick, I kind of noticed the removal of the passenger triangles as an option as well. Damn but I wish there was another way. But the bull-legged stance isn't doing me any favours. |

Wow, I have been away from this topic for a while! Lots of action finally. Ben, wire around the turned down profile of the plug (the part where we pull on) then run the same wire around the drain tubing a couple inches above the plug. If you wire any closer the plug, the plug might get pushed out by the squishing of the tubing. This is more secure than just wiring around where the plug is inside the tubing. Also wire the drain tubing to the frame to keep it from flapping around. Good luck and try not to break the bank. |

Michael: Got the sprocket from Street & Competition (streetandcomp.com). It is an offset sprocket. It's sold for "883 5-speed Buell", but I've yet to fit it to the bike. Hopefully, will get mounted up this Sunday, as I won't get to watch Colin kick Troy's a** until 9pm. X1G: Thanks for the tip on the drainplug. I wasn't sure that it'd pass tech that way, so I just wanted to check the board for advice. So noted! Ben |

Thanks Ben, I'll check it out. The 22 I've got is offset as well. Hopefully they're close.. Michael |

John, American SportBike makes rearsets that attach to the passenger triangle. That may bring the pegs in marginally. |

Did close to 100 miles lapping OHR yesterday (Saturday). Did the last 25 laps (45 miles) in one continuous session. I'm so sore I can hardly move, legs, arms, and hands. Casualties of the outing include... front brake pads, my left boot (reaching for a downshift too early coming into turn 7). Figured out that with a 29 tooth front sprocket I could run the entire course in 2nd and 3rd gears (good endurance setup with only two up/down shifts per lap). It might be even better with a 26 tooth and the new 2nd gear, even having to hit 4th once per lap. |

Better watchit XG. Failing to capitalize "Texas" could land you in the hall of shame. But yes, the CMRA is the NE Texas Regional affiliate of the CCS. |

That's a lotta miles for a practice Blake. What is that, 55 laps? I seem to remember only using 2nd and 3rd at Motorsport Ranch in Cresson myself. The X1 couldn't build the rpms quick enough to need another shift. How were your lap times compared to your last outing? My race ECM was reflashed Saturday but I have yet to do it's "training" run. I'm wary of "training" it on the track because it might not be trained properly for the street. Don't know if that's truly a consideration. Also had the idle set at appx 1100 rpm instead of 1000. I figure it'll do better with cold starts. |

Unfortunately the track repair didn't turn out to be 100%. Turns two and eight are still rather dicy. The determination was that turns two and eight require more extensive work than simple patching and Rhino coating. They have been patched, but received no Rhino coat. They only put the Rhino coat on turn one. I didn't get any meaningful lap times. Had a great time though. Give me a definite date and I'll reserve the track for us. The track would be perfect for breaking in the new ECM. You can maintain the requisite rpm without any worry of traffic. |

What you say goes against all that the CMRA said they'd do. Even I said that turns 2 and 8 needed to be ripped up completely and re-poured. Everyone that's spent time in a corner there knows that there is a concrete base layer, then 4 layers of blacktop on top. No wonder it was in such bad shape. As far as I could tell there wasn't anything wrong with turn 1. Perhaps turn 1 will be a little faster now, like it's ever been a problem. Sounds disappointing to me. As for the next time, I am going to Korea again Sunday afternoon (from Dallas) since I am there for the weekend. So, I'll probably be back somwhere between Oct 14-18. Still looking for a place to live. I really wish they'd ship the bike over. So sometime after that. The last race of the season is Oct 12 & 13, so perhaps everyone will be too tired to ride for the next few weeks and the Buells can have the track to themselves. |

It is disappointing. We were told that the pavement had been fully repaired over a month ago and that all that was needed was the rhino coat. They put down some thin strips on turn one as a preventative measure; it was probably warranted. I think what happened was that the track owner/representative did indeed have the track patched over a month ago as he said, but upon seeing the result the CMRA rightly recognized that it was an inadequate job and needed proper redoing. I'm going over to the CMRA board to raise the issue again, though I'm betting some of the others there probably already have. Let's plan on October 26th and 27th, make an entire weekend of it. You bring the umbrella girls, I'll provide sustenance. |

I should warn you though, the dreaded four letter word, "work" may interfere with my track time flexibility in the next month or two. Before you take off for Korea, we definitely need to do an OHR track day though. |

Sorry, I left the umbrella girls at the Bus Stop in Boulder. Perhaps the college in Tyler can provide. Getting to the track shouldn't be difficult for me since I am foregoing the hunting excursions this season, I just sold the bow. Can't stand the way they hunt in Texas (sit on your ass in one spot all day and wait for something to come to you.) I grew up tracking my prey. Do that in Texas, you just get shot yourself. Hopefully, I'll have a place picked out to live next week and can get away with video conferences til it's time to go. Brooks just posted that they have realized that patching isn't going to cut it and that the corners must be done properly. No dates or details were provided. Too bad we couldn't do Cresson for 50 bucks. |

With a little leaf blowering and some brooming, the track will be pretty darn good. Looks like if weather holds Keith and I will be at the track this Saturday too. Get that X1 together and cart it up here. |

Looks like I'm doing my last track day this year on Monday; it's getting cold up here in Canada. At my last track day a week or two ago, a racer told me there was a bunch of mechanical noise coming out of my motor shuttin' her down for turn 1, then a "puff" of blue smoke. Anyone have a guess as to what would cause the "puff" of smoke? I'm sure I was running about 6500 rpm before shuttin' it down. I don't think there was any undue mechanical noise (I mean, it's a sportster motor!). John E. P.S. Rick, I noticed the ASB rear sets as well. I figure I'll run it early next season and see how the rear sets go, and if I have to shave it, I will. |

JohnM2, A puff of blue smoke on deceleration might indicate a hot engine and/or poor ring seal (oil getting sucked from crankcase side past rings) or leaking valve guide seals. Definitely oil related though. If you need help posting your pic, go ahead and send it to me, and I'll get it compressed and return it to you. Blake |

I'll try to figure out the picture later. I want to fit bodywork to my M2 and had a question: I was talking to Airtech today, and they figured the S1 '96 to '98 Superbike and GP bodywork (the front part, not the tail section) wouldn't fit the M2, since the rake and trail on the M2 and the height of the M2 is different from the S1. But it seems to me they may be the same in '97: the factory information (brochures) says in '97 the M2 and S1 both had 25 degree rake and 3.9 inch trail, and of course the same wheelbase. I have BattleTwin articles that list the seat height and ground clearance of the '97 S1 and M2 as the same as well, and that state the M2 and S1 frames (pre-'98) are very similar, except for the footpeg mounting stuff. Does anyone know if the Airtech Superbike or GP bodywork (the front part) would fit the '97 M2? (I know the tail section won't but that's a different problem that I'll save for another day). Does anyone know anyone who has fitted race style bodywork to an M2? Any ideas on how to get the M2 fitted out with bodywork? Thanks for any help or ideas. John E. |

José Q. was nice enough to post a link to the Qualifying standings for Daytona. Take note of a new friend of mine, fellow CMRA racer here in Texas, out of Austin, Michael Sanchez. He's qualified third for the amateur HW SBK, HW SS races, and 2nd in MW SBK. This is the guy who took my M2 for a stroll around OHR a few weeks ago. Also Erik Falt, another Texan CMRA racer, qualifying 2nd in both expert LW GP and LW SBK on his SV650. |

10/23/2002 Buell's Take On Bemisderfer's Championship From a press release: DAYTONA SURPRISE: BEMISDERFER NABS BUELL LIGHTNING TITLE Johnson Wins Thunderbike Championship Watching from the Sidelines Bryan Bemisderfer of Greencastle, Pa. won an unexpected series championship in the Formula USA Buell Lightning Series, presented by Buell Pro Series Accessories at the final event of the season at Daytona International Speedway, and he nearly nabbed another in Thunderbike. Bemisderfer, the large and likeable racer who had the Buell Lightning Series points lead going into the penultimate round at Portland, came to Daytona in third place after his team unexpectedly pulled out of the series. He arrived at Daytona with race bikes provided by Harley-Davidson of Frederick but no team support, and with a 14-point deficit, little hope of winning the title. His chances looked especially slim after series points leader Michael Barnes of Kosco Harley-Davidson/Buell-Innovative Motorcycle Research claimed the pole and another point with a 2:01.823 lap in qualifying, placing him just two points ahead of Hal’s Harley-Davidson/Buell rider Clint Brotz in the series standings. The first title contender to drop out was Brotz, who crashed along with his Hal’s Harley-Davidson/Buell teammate Richie Morris in turn one on the second lap of the eight-lap race. Barnes, meanwhile, was streaking ahead to a big lead and what looked like a certain victory when he crashed violently in the dogleg on lap six. The race win went to Barnes’ Kosco teammate Dave Estok, with Bemisderfer 11.4 seconds back in second place, good for 20 points and the series title. Mark Reynolds (Boston H-D/Buell), Darren James (H-D/Buell of Toronto) and Greg Avello (Milwaukee H-D/Buell) rounded out the top five. Bemisderfer ended the season with 120 points to 117 for Barnes and 113 for Brotz. “I guess I should buy some lottery tickets today,” said Bemisderfer after the race. “To be honest I didn’t even know I’d won the title, because I couldn’t tell Barnes had crashed. My crew told me when I got back to the pits.” Bemisderfer found himself in position to grab another championship when Thunderbike series points leader Jeff Johnson of Hoban Brothers/Buell of Appleton failed to take the start of the race due to damage sustained in a minor spill on pit lane. In order to overcome Johnson’s point advantage, Bemisderfer would have to win the race, and all Johnson could do was watch from pit lane as Bemisderfer led the opening laps. Johnson’s points lead proved to be safe when Bemisderfer lost positions to Ed Key (Suzuki) and Tripp Nobles (Tilley H-D/Buell). Johnson’s championship is the third consecutive Thunderbike championship won by a Buell racer. “That’s not how we wanted our weekend to go,” said Johnson. “But we’ll take the championship.” For photography and information on Harley-Davidson Motor Company and Buell American Motorcycles, visit www.h-dmedia.com.
