So my day ends at the truck factory and I make my way to the uly like I have everyday since I picked it up in June. I gear up, turn the key on, turn the engine run switch on, and when the check engine light goes out I hit the starter. It kind of turns over and clicks once and a while but will not start the bike. I turn everything off and try again same thing. I pop the seat off and check the battery connections, everything is tight. I try again with the seat off, same thing but this time I can smell burning wire insulation, I hate that smell!! I start wiggling wires and finally it starts so I load up and head straight home. After getting safely home I shut her down and try to start it again, same old story. This time with the seat off I see lots more smoke, coming from the wrapped harness...this can't be good. A couple more wiggles and then it starts?? There is obviously something in the wrapped harness that is exposed or something. I'm tempted to cut the harness wrap off but wonder if I should just take it to the dealer, will I get in trouble for digging into it?? Also since I did the wiggling of the harness it starts better than ever now. It used to have a slight delay when I would start it, now it cranks better and quicker. The bike is an 08 with 2800 miles... |

If it's under warranty - do NOT go digging into the harness unless you're very confident you can identify and fix whatever the problem is. They'll likely claim you caused the damage. Take it in - and I suggest you tow/trailer it. |

I figured I should just get it to the dealer..dangit. I've ridden the thing everyday since I took delivery in June...hope the car starts tomorrow and that the withdrawl isn't real bad. |

Yooper do you need a trailer to get it over there? If so I have a covered trailer that could haul it across town for you. |

I heard from the service manager last week Thursday that they couldn't replicate the no start. I figured that would happen and told him I wanted them to dig deeper, more specifically into the wrapped harness behind the left-side air deflector. I just called to check on the bike as I didn't hear any more after telling them to dig deeper. I guess the tech did find fried wires, something about the fuel pump harness. I knew with the amount of smoke I was seeing coming from the harness they were going to find something. The service writer I talked to this morning also mentioned that the harness I need is on back order too, and that they were going to put in a bike-down request to try and expedite getting the harness. I plan to get a little more clarification on the problem when I pick to the bike up, whenever that might be. I'm planning on heading out for a ride on the twat next week so it had better be some time this week as I have some accessory installation to do yet... |

Yooper71, I had the same symptoms, minus the smoke, ended up getting the wiring harness replaced. 08 with about 1000 miles on it when it went. Sounds like more people are having this issue. |
