When I took my 9 out of the frame on my bike the front motor mount would not unbolt because the threaded insert in the frame was turning with the mount bolt. I noticed that the insert has a six point head that a wrench would fit on. but I couldn't possibly fit the wrench on with the motor in the way, so I shoehorned it out, sliding it past the motor mount and rear of the frame with a lot of persuasion and a prybar. when i finnaly got the 1" wrench on the insert and tried turning the large bolt, it just wanted to strip the head of the threaded insert.(I had to grind the down thickness of the wrench to fit in between the frame and mount). when i put the new motor in, there is no way to get it in with the mount on the frame. What do you think? any suggestions? anyone have this issue before?.......thanks |

Soak it with PB blaster and try again in the morning? Maybe a little heat from a soldering iron or one of those torch things. (Message edited by mr2shim on September 02, 2008) |

I have had my bike in two pieces and cannot follow your description of a bolt that uses a 1" wrench to separate it. Any pics?

yea i wish i could upload my pics, I tried but im on dial up and it takes so long to load pics, and right now I can't figure out how to resize them to fit in the posts...Anyways the 1 inch bolt is the threaded insert that is in the frame were the large bolt going through the front motor mount bolts into. It is torqued into the threaded insert and when I try to spin the bolt off the whole insert wants to turn in the frame. you can barely get and open end wrench in between the mount and the frame, I had to grind the wrench thinner and pry down the mount to get it on the bolt to try and hold it while i turn the motor mount bolt. |

Too bad it is so big...if it were smaller drilling it would be a good option. Provided that the insert wasnt screwed up and required a new heli-coil |

Dooley, I know exactly what you are talking about as I had a similar problem when I went to replace the front isolator on my Uly recently. The bolt was very corroded into the threaded insert. I managed to unscrew the insert a couple of turns (it is a very course thread that goes into the frame so a couple of turns will get that very thin flat away from the frame enough to get a very thin 1" spanner on it. I was lucky enough to have it break free in my case and loctited the insert back into the frame without issue. Are you able to unscrew the insert completely with the bolt still through the isolator? If I have read your post corectly you now have the engine out of the way? If you can that will allow you to get to the upper side of the insert and get some WD40 / Penetrine into play as the problem will be in the area that is impossible to get to from beneath. This what my mounting bolt looked like after I eventually removed it - the corrosion is scary. The threaded insert is available as a part - C0028.02A8A for a Uly so I wouldn't be too concerned about damaging it.

Rays thanks im glad someone else has experiance with this. The bolt and insert is really tight when I spin the bolt it wants to spin the rubber in the mount and I'm afraid that if I crank down that I would destroy the isolator rubber, it is a new mount and I dont want to buy another one, if I can help it. I tried again today after soaking the heck out of it with liquid wrench, but it just rounded the corners more, even tried needle nose vise grips, no luck. I will try spinning the bolt in the isolator tommorow, I'm almost ready to cut the head off the bolt. |

Mine looked exactly like that when I replaced it. I coated the new one with antisieze before putting it back in. Hopefully that will fix this problem in the future. |

well i got it out last night, I decided to cut the head off the bolt, when I got a 1/4 of the way through, I tried to spin the bolt again and it finally started spinning, along with the insert though, when it was all out, there was no corrosion at all. It was a new mount that I installed before my motor blew up, its hard to tell but maybe the bolt was cross threaded in the insert....thanks for all your suggestions and help.......cheers |
