Man, I've called or ordered from everyone I can find and nobody has these in stock. I'd planned on riding a bunch over Labor day weekend so I'm bumming. I'm considering cutting a couple of grade 8's back to 2 3/4" and using them in my new NRHS Billet mount until the F911's come in sometime in September. Has anybody done this? Unbelievable. Can anybody help out a jonesing Bueller? Steve |

Go to your local bolt and screw vendor. They will have what you need in a grade 8. |

I dunno but this reminds me of when I lost one of the pins to my PM caliper (the ones that hold the pads in). I knew it would be several days to order one anywhere and expected to have to pay lik $10, so I when to Lowes and found a bolt that was extended enough that the part without threads was the same length as the pin, then ground off the threads and drilled a hole through the bolt. I also ground off the the majority of the head. Works just fine . (Message edited by phelan on August 27, 2008) |

I have an order in for another box of Chromate CIC 200 bolts and washers for the mounts. They should be in next week. They are 3" bolts . . .and I have had some success with trimming them down to size. I will post a notice when they come in. My plan is to sell them off at cost plus shipping, and based on my last purchase of the HD/Buell bolts . . . they will be less expensive than the F911 offerings. |

Don, that's very good news. I'll still get my new isolator from American Sport Bike but put me down for a set or two, you have my email address I believe... Thanks! Steve |

Thanks Crazyhorse. Buellistic, I'm planning to use Grade 8 temporarily until the real deal arrives from Don Casto. Long weekend coming up and I need a functioning motorcycle... Edit: Don when you say "some success" are you saying they're tough to cut? (Message edited by woodnbow on August 28, 2008) |

Frank: From what I recall . . .F911 are grade 8 bolts. If one can believe the Chromate site, their CIC 200 bolts are rated at more than grade 8, and have an additional corrosion resistant coating system. I have been able to cut/grind the pesky extra 1/4 inch off the Chromate bolts . . .but suspect that this may not give full corrosion resistance at where the trimming has been done. This is, however, where the bolt is buried deep in the head . . .YMMV. Although I have not explored the packaging and shipping costs . . .I am hoping to be able to keep my costs to under $10 per pair. The so far it appears as though the washers and bolts have cost me $4.25 per pair. Here is a link to PDF file on these bolts . . .http://www.chromate.com/AgentCatalogWeb/Section%20 10.pdf I will update and firm up the details as soon as they get here. Don |

Don, I was surfing/googling after our exchange the other day. Came across an auto racing forum in which they were discussing F911. According to the resident guru's F911 has slightly higher shear strength than Grade 8 but that they're a poor choice in applications under vibration and or shear stress... Not sure about that information (should have bookmarked the site) but just thought I'd pass it along. Edit: Here's the link to that forum, http://www.race-dezert.com/forum/showthread.php?p=528449 (Message edited by woodnbow on August 28, 2008) |

Follow the link and you'll find a pic of a sheared F911. Looks identical to mine right down to the "beach lines". http://www.race-dezert.com/forum/showthread.php?s= 4fd66220cba8cdce9df3ca40732b7444&t=47838&page=6 |

IMHO, the way these motor mounts are put together(ie; assembled on bike), set up(ie: everything finger tight, then let the mount take the weight on the engine), and then torqued has a lot to do with them braking(ie: bolts) ... My first motor mount assembly was done at the factory and it took a wreak to break the OEM one which was later on re-call ... The replacement was re-done as a recall which one of the bolts broke later on and took the motor mount with it ... "i" then put on a after re-call mount with one new bolt and old one and it has had a lot of miles put on the bike since then with no bolt/motor mount problems except the replacement of one isolator ... |

IMHO, it is a put together problem, which over stress'es the bolts which cause them to bteak(also applies to head/header exhaust studs) ... |

You should NEVER reuse the bolts. You should ABSOLUTELY follow the current factory procedure. |

Woodnbow: See my post above for Posted on Thursday, August 28, 2008-04:14 pm: ABOVE !!! Court: "i" agree with you from your point of view ... Could someone explain to me why the case/cylinder/head studs are never replaced ??? They are under a lot more stress than anything else on the bike ??? Think about it !!! |

The Bolts Have Arrived
The Chomate CIC200 bolts with extra thick grade 8 washers are now available again. I am sending them out at my cost . . .$12.25 per pair (as shown), shipped via USPS First Class Mail. I have 12 sets available, but can order more if need be. They may or may not require trimming from their existing 3 inch length to the original length of 2 3/4 inches. I have been able to remove the extra 1/4 when necessary with a Dremel tool and grinder. I will be contacting those that have requested bolts in the past, and will give them first call. Thanks, Don Casto Boulder, Colorado |
