After 15+ yrs of lower back pain the time has come. I will be having spinal fusion surgery on Oct. 7th. L5-S1 will be fused with the disc being removed and a spacer put back in. Also the disc between L3-L4 is bulging as well. So it will be shaved down. The doctor says I will be out of commission for 6 weeks. Any ideas to make the time go by? |

I enrolled for the fall semester yesterday and, based on an admittedly non-scientific sample . . . I'd recommend a co-ed. |

steve, wish you all the luck in the process and i wish there was an alternative that you can take. if it was me, i'd be getting the age of empires expansion game to pass the time. if your stuck in the bed, just put the monitor on a bed tray and get a wireless keyboard and mouse. good luck and let us know how it goes. or you could spend it more wisely like court. will this effect your riding at all? I'd recommend a co-ed. Perhaps not while recovering from back surgery. |

Teach yourself something - HTML, guitar, Greek, anything... Keep yourself on a strict schedule, with specific goals, etc. Set the end goal, (create a full website, be able to play your favorite song, pass a basic Greek exam, etc.) for the last week of your six-week hiatus. The time will fly by as you work toward the new goal, and coincidentally that goal will be the same as your "get back on the bike" goal. And take it from me - do NOT, I say again, DO NOT try to push it and shorten the recovery time. I ruptured a disc when I was 22, had back surgery, and was stuck in a hospital for weeks. I decided I was in good enough shape to start walking around, carrying books again, (I was a college student at the time). I ended up herniating the same disc, and the docs couldn't do anything about it because if they cut into the same spot, the scar tissue would probably end up pinching my sciatic nerve just as much as the herniated disc. So I basically screwed myself, and have to live with back pain for the rest of my life. |

XBOX360 os PS3 Call of Duty 4. Amazing how fast a day whips by. +1 million!!! May I also suggest Grand Theft Auto 4. Nothing makes you feel quiate as good at the end of a frustrating day than running over innocent pedestrians and blowing up your fellow online gamers with RPGs. When the bike isn't an option, that is my therapy, lol. Of course, taking college courses is probably a little more constructive. |

You could try for the record as most frequent poster on here. Just reply to everything, get a couple of flame wars going, etc. You could probably get close just by starting another synthetic Trans fluid thread going. |

I like the idea of upgrading your professional skills. It is so easy to do with online courses. You might also want to upgrade your computer drafting skills if that is relevant to your work. |

I went through that when I was 34. It sucks to be taken out of the prime of your career and life with the crushed disc syndrome. Pay attention to what has been said about short cutting recovery time.....it doesn't happen. Hopefully yours won't be as screwed up as mine has been. I was fortunate enough to be on workmans comp for the duration. Through their rehab program I was able to qualify for college and did a two year stint(COED) thus allowing more of the important recovery time. For me life changed dramatically, being very physical in the autobody/paint field. Had to go back in management. Plan on doing the easy thing physically, use carts, levers, hoists, and don't forget to ask for help moving or lifting things. Best of luck with that and I hope to see you on that Buell when you're ready. |
