What a Disaster~ 2008 Buell Ulysses... 4600 Miles... I am guessing the rear head blew??? Or a sever rockerbox cover disaster? I noticed cleaning the bike the other day, oil on primary cover, traced it back up to the top of the rear head. I suspected a rockerbox cover leak. Called & set up an apointment for my 5K service & told them of the oil issue. Got an pointment for Sep 8th. This morning, I started her up, then smoke came out, burning smell, turned the bike off, Oil covering the rear header??? Seriously... the bike is brand new.. can this be??? My 2nd Buell, my 2002 X1 was plagued with leaks... we shall see what the dealer says when I take her in under waranty now. Wish me luck.. damn.. |

I don't understand why they can't seal these motors? Surely it's not the gaskets fault, unless they are using severely inadequate gaskets. Are these motors just manufactured poorly with uneven sealing surfaces? Mine doesn't have any leaks, but I'm not optimistic for the future. |

My 2nd Buell, my 2002 X1 was plagued with leaks Same here, but '99 X1. I don't understand why they can't seal these motors? Surely it's not the gaskets fault, unless they are using severely inadequate gaskets. Are these motors just manufactured poorly with uneven sealing surfaces? I think it is because they are air cooled, and the parts expand at different rates, and may disrupt the gasket seal after many expansions and contractions. I do know the base gaskets leak if you do not warm up the bike enough and get on the throttle hard. Been there. The rocker box setup has too many surfaces that have to be sealed, in my opinion. Why not just have a head and valve cover? Is there an engineering reason for the extra parts and mating surfaces, or is it just 1955 legacy stuff? |

Its not being aircooled~ My Honda Nighthawk (aircooled inline 4cyl) never ever leaked & it sat in the same traffic my Buells have???? |

Well I just bought my bike used, so I don't know any repair history, but so far it doesn't leak at all. It's got 7500 miles on it now and I expect to put at least that much on it in the next 2 years. I don't have to worry about sitting in traffic, no traffic hear. |

A lot less common on the XB's, but rockerbox gaskets can still fail. It shouldn't have happened, and generally doesn't. The dealer should be able to fix it quickly. Most every Japanese bike i have touched had weeping on the valve cover gasket... it just leaked slower. I finally got it stopped on my Kawasaki, all it took was a glorified $50 o-ring . |

It could be something as simple as one of the breather hoses being loose from the airbox or PCV valve. This isn't a disaster, it's a fairly easy fix even if it is a rocker cover gasket. |

I had the breather hose break at the nipple on the back cylinder. It made quite a mess. |

We don't have much to go on, but Hughlysses is most likely correct. If it's the rear rocker then it's a very easy fix too. Please let us know what they find. |

Maybe too much oil in combination with a loose breather hose? Fortunately oil leaks don't seem to be a common problem on this board. G |

+1 for rear cylinder leak. Noticed the "automatic oiling" feature all over the cooling fan after my 600 mile ride this weekend. Unfortunately it was leaking next to two hondas. Why couldn't my girl wait until we got home? She had to go and wet herself while in mixed company. |
