Hey ya'll,

I'm a 19 year old new Blast owner, and I can't believe how much fun "Thumper" is! Last year in college, I found THUMPer Forum after my dad mentioned that he might be going to look at a Buell Blast for me that someone was selling. (Little did I know that he had already bought it and it was sitting at home in the garage!) Anyways, he finally told me about it the week of finals...(probably not a good time, cuz I spent all of the time I should have been studying looking at this forum!) Anyways, finals got over, I went home, rode it, and couldn't get enough of it. Well to make a long story short, my dad wouldn't let me bring it up here to K-State, so I'm going through withdrawal and it sucks!

By the way, how much work and what does it cost to replace the paper head gasket? It just started leaking after I left. (I think it's crying cuz I won't be able to ride it much now that I'm back in school.)

You mean the rocker box gasket, right? That's the common one, but there are plenty of other gaskets up there that can leak too!

If it's an oil leak from between the cylinder and the head, the problem is the o-ring around the front "head stud insert", aka "alignment dowel", which is actually the oil drainback passage from the head. There are also o-rings at the top of the pushrod cover. The Rocker cover has two gaskets, outer and inner, but they are the rubber type and less likely to leak. The 4 screws that hold the cover on each have a seal under the head too. Also, the PCV connection up on top has a grommet that is prone to loosening up and leaking.

There's a thread somewhere here with the latest revision part numbers listed for all the gaskets. Prices vary from dealer to dealer.

You can remove the gas tank, clean up all traces of oil from the top end, and reassemble and ride until you can see EXACTLY where the leak is, and then just replace the problem gasket - or you may just want to change all of them and be done with it. If you do change the head gasket or o-rings, just be careful not to disturb the cylinder - the base gasket is a PIA to replace, and will tear if the cylinder comes loose from the crankcase.

Its a 2002 - probably still has the original paper head gasket - it isn't easy, however, it is doable. Se the TKV section.

Thanks for that. I figured you would have to take off the tank and all, but I wasn't sure if the bolts and everything were easy to get to or not. And, yes, I think it is the rocker box gasket so I'll re-read the TKV section about it to make sure I can do it right.

Pick up a service manual as well.
