My 2005 XB bit the dust last night due to kickstand mounting bolt failure. It sheared off right at the top of the threads. When I leaned her gently over onto the kickstand she went further over than I thought was normal, but my dumb a$$ leaned a little further, a little further, and....too heavy to hold anymore...damnit! Scratched my mirror )-: Nothing a little 1600 grit sandpaper and some black auto polish can't cure I suppose, but it hurt my feelings for sure. I'm thinking I'll tap out the threads on the stand and go with high grade steel, lock nut and a freakin safety wire this time. Turning that bolt down on the end and then threading it like that was a bad idea; definite weak spot. |

Be careful, its a more complicated assembly then it looks like. In order to avoid putting in a side stand safety switch, they designed that stand so it will self retract if you drive off with it down. It works under a remarkable collection of circumstances (speed bumps, curbs, turns, DAMHIK). If you change it too much, it might loose some of that "self retraction" capability, and you might end up with a low speed boink instead of a driveway drop. Mine (05 XB9SX) worked loose, and I tightened it before anything happened, and it has been great since. I wonder if the breaking bolts were a result of a loose bolt that then got over stressed, rather then an actual weak bolt. FWIW. |
