The KTM article quoted above seems to be a translation of a Alan Cathcart piece, also run in its original English in this month's motorcyclist. Alan tends to get edited heavily -- his raw articles are long and often repetitive -- so it's always interesting to see them from multiple sources. The quoted weight is interesting: 183Kg for the proto, and an expected increase of 10Kg for production. That would bring the wet weight to 425 pounds, or about 25 less than a Firebolt. Or, as Alan has already indicated before, if only Erik Buell had this engine . . . . . . extrapolating, the result would be a 390-pound wet weight Firebolt, as there's at least 60 pounds claimed weight different between the KTM engine and the 984 Buell/H-D powerplant. |

KTM . . . mmmmmmm . . . . .Uke's in Racine is now a KTM dealer . . . . . I could keep the M2 as my all-weather interceptor and grab one of those KTM twins for close ground support . . . . gets a boy thinking, it does |

Is Uke's intermingling them with the Buells and Harley's? With many H-D shops being so vehemetlly(sp?) anti-Buell, I wonder what the MoCo is thinking about the Ducati and KTM intrusions into the "protected" sales floors. Ah well, something to think about, and maybe to write an article on as well. Got more to say, but I'll save it. Say, how are the rumors doing these days about the H-D corp people looking to acquire another bike company? |

Mike . . . .my undestanding is, HD/Buell in the new megolopogis, KTM in the existing building (which is pretty small) . . . . I agree with many on this, and other, boards . . . . a Buell-only, or, more likely, Buell/Ducati/KTM/Apprilia/Munch Mamoth dealer would get Buell in front of more people . . . wandering into an HD dealer for the first time is a little like walking into someone else's church . . . . . first reaction is to walk back out again . . . . .. although I wish NO company (and it's employees) ill, I cdan't help but feel that HD had better do a better job of addressing other, and younger riders if they wish to stay healthy . . .there's only so many dentists who have Sonny Barger-envy it would be great if DaveS or Spidey could weigh in and give us their views . . . . guys? as for rumors, sure, I've heard a bunch . . . . which are you willing to buy for a dollar? |

Bomber, You'd probably enjoy my article, not ready yet though, probably get me banned from Milwaukee. I do like Harley's, just not some of the background and mis-directions. MikeJ (I think I'd better finish the degree and increase the trailer/truck search some if it gets published.) |

Mikej publish under a psuedonym . . . . . . hey, it works! the productrs, mostly, are nice . . . . it's too bad that the lifestyle marketing people have taken over for the scooter trash that could run the joint . . . . P&A over core products will kill ya everytime . . . . . could take awhile though, which means they won't see it coming (GM is still tryin to figure out where all the old cadillac buyers went . . . . ) |

ROLF . . . yeha, yer right, sir . . . . Pete Egan did a piece years ago for Road and Track ( an old guys mag if there ever was one) outlining the perfect old folks home . . . . stacks of Marshalls in the garage for the Strats and Teles . . . good hydraulic lifts (cuz ew don't squat as good as we used to), nicely loaded roll cabs full of good tools for all our projects . . . . . hell, sounds pretty good to me! |

Arvel . . . . .well, since I knew about Egan's piece, stands to reason I've read the magazine too, yes? R&T never had quite the edge Car and Driver had in it's heyday, but was clearly less of a soporiphic than Motor Trend . . . . . . I remember pictures of stringbacked driving gloves in R&T . . . . with the "controls readily to hand" in a borgward or some such their April Road Tests, however, were a stich (baldwin loco one year, goodyear blimp another . . . . good fun) |

For those who needed a headlight lense for the S1 style Bosch and did not want to buy the entire headlight from Buell at $150.00 +, here's the BMW part number (after all it is a German headlight)63-12-1-358-147. It's $25.43 at your local Beemer dealer. I'd really like to support Buell and all they're trying to do, and I know motorcycling has become a "luxury" sport, but I'll be damned if I'm gonna spend my hard earned dollars on something I don't need. |

Chuck: You dirty dog....up'n trying to sabotage Erik's "headlight retirement program"! Seriously, get that info in the knowledge vault. The "service parts" issue haunted Buell in the time frame your bike was born in. It was NOT the way we wanted things and many of you got parts "under the table" for "sub-sub-sub" components like Marchisini wheel, brake and suspension parts. Buell was buying compoments, say a "headlight assembly" and as a result had no part numbers for stuff like the trim ring, the "blank" on the left C.E.V. controls and the front brake pins. Things are better now and improving quickly. One of the great services this board provides (in addition to having some GREAT AUSTRALIAN cooks) is to disseminate this type of info. Court |

Hey Ferris !!.....Slacker HHUUHH...! Well , I never did get to ride with Jerry on Sunday....however....NOT DUE to SLACKERING !! Got the new cams and lifters in Saturday(the ones ruined on the first day of the Brag Cal ride)Sun morning got up early to test bike and the Header support mount broke.Quick trip to work to weld up and after mounting up, the rear exhaust gasket sucked into pipe.Thouroughly pissed off and finally on my way, just passing through San Clemente my Oil Cooler and extra long Dyna filter decided to vibrate loose and by the time I realized what the warm and fuzzy feeling was on my left foot was I was over a quart low!!No...No...my OIL was a quart low!!So now it was ride through the houses expectin' the oil light to come on and tryin' to find an auto parts house to replace the oil and then on to a car wash so as not to slide around like Nicky Hayden on hot tires the rest of the way.By the time I got to the BBQ things were already under way and Jerry and gang hadnt even made it yet!!The only savings Grace was all the REALLY GREAT people there and the fact that for the story about my morning I won an ASB AWARD for the best Hard Luck story of the bunch!!!Vik EEEK was there but came down on Suzuki and I never got to hear his story!!VIK could you tell us about yours??? You definately came a long ways.....maybe Ill need to give up to you!!The BBQ was ..Like Allways.. awesome with a bunch of people from all over and a plethora of great looking SteedsTat , Maria , Melanie and all the great helpers...THANK YOU!! and a special Thank You to ANDY on his 'Busa for the Comraderie!!!Lets get a whole day up on Palomar for some knee-draggin' and Spark flyin"!!(that means you Darryl! Happy days to all and keep them oily...(sic)..sides down!! |

As far as S1 headlights go, ALL the pieces can be purchased seperatly from your friendly local BMW dealer. In fact the first several hundred bikes off the production line had headlights purchased that way. I still get a discount and very nice treatment at the local BMW dealer. Not often that he gets a $15000 spare parts order in January!! The design guys learned that Bosch had a 6 week leadtime on headlight orders but didn't ask about our particular headlight. Turns out since it ran on a special mold becasue of the size Bosch would runit once a year. They would collect Ducati's and BMW's requirements for the year and than 6 weeks later deliver headlamps. Unfortunatly we wanted headlamps in April and they planned on running them in September. One of the things that Made a buyer's life interesting. They also had a headlight bucket from the Ducati Monster purchased from a variety of Ducati dealers around the country. After the first 100 or so bike we got ducati ti sell us several hundred pieces and by then we had our supplier on line to make them. Buell stocked the spare pieces for quite a while but since we purchased them from BMW and not Bosch the resale price was nuts. BMW is a very large bosch customer so when they want every little bit of the headlamp assembly to be servicable it is. When Buell, who bought a few thousand headlights total from Bosch, asks for something they are often told to forget about it. |

Bomber, That was my polite way of saying we're not old. Now for a quick quiz. How many people fell in lust with the brunette in the Brembo steering wheel ad. Oh! That was certainly the way to sell those wheels to young hormone challenged men. It's even sucessful on older hormone challenged men, we just have enough experience to come up with other rationals. All, Spoke with Dan briefly. He's getting around. More importantly, Cil is not a nervous wreck. I am quite confident that he will wear full leathers in the future, especially after talking with him and Cil. He is now enjoying the reliable, staid, S2. Now if it were only a proper RED. Personally, my wife won't let me out of the house without full leathers after my last mishap. Back to work. Arvel |

And for any of you that dig carbon fibre, you can buy the Duc headlamp shell in CF as a genuine Ducati part or various aftermarket companies make it in CF too. Rocket |

Sean: I've tried putting that CF Ducati Monster headlamp shell on the Buell. Not only is it kind of poorly finished but the left side speedo cable is absent (something that doesn't affect X1's) and the screws are different. The hole for the cable is a big old square so you don't have to do any pin extraction and there is an external unfinished seam along the junction of the mold halfs. I do not recommend it. |

Well I guess there is always two sides to every story, if Buell can't sell individual components to a headlight assembly because the supplier can't or won't deliver then I guess I can't complain too much. I just figured it was the old Harley mentality of taking advantage of our brand loyalty and trying to bend us over once again. |

Jose, the one I saw at the Ducati dealer was identical to the S1 shell. Bare in mind that Ducati have used at least two different companies to produce genuine brand carbon fibre products. I can't speak for the aftermarket suppliers as I've not seen or experienced their products, but I'd look at ART in the UK for a quality aftermarket CF product, and because of ART's Buell connections, they should know if the Ducati shell is identical to the S1's. Having said that, I don't know if ART produce the Ducati type shell in CF, but that's where I'd look first for quality and value. Rocket |

This is how my S1 looks at the moment.....its taken over 10 months to find a company who would guarantee their coating on all the items shown. The engine casings have been blasted so many times I'm surprised there is anything left!! Everything is being coated with a teflon based product, and hopefully I can ride the bike in all weathers and not have to worry about it going a horrible furry white colour.

Just read a review of Sony MDR-NC11 Noise-Canceling earbud headphones. These have small microphones & an amplifier that sample ambient noise and produce an out-of-phase signal that quiets background noise for better sounding music. Sorta like how the tuber's stock airbox quiets intake bark I suppose. I wonder how they would work (without music) to just supress wind noise while riding? Their effective range is 50 to 1000 Hz with 10 dB noise reduction, which should help some. Perhaps Sony should scale this up and build a straight-through electronic noise-cancelling muffler. Then they'd really have something, eh! Sparky |
