ref http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/32777/389353.html?1219632294 My low beam cut out on me. Intermittent at first, then total death. Melted the extension harness running the HID ballast straight off the low beam. Couple o ya told me not to, but I had done a search and could not find anyone who had any problems doing so... I don't know if I am the first who's burned up their harness, but I don't mind being the first to admit it. Live & learn. Am lucky. Still power at the main harness so I just need a replacement extension harness. I've got an auxillary harness on order now to power the ballast off the battery instead. Do not run your HID straight off the low beam line.

Couple o ya told me not to I hate to kick you when you are down, but there was plenty of warning this would happen. The amp draw during startup can be north of 25amps.

Thanks for taking one for the team! I ran mine off the battery, but there was this deep nagging thought that I may have been wasting my time. Thanks for the datapoint Brad. |

My harness did that as well, but I have silverstar bulbs!!!! NO HID. still scratchin my head on that one. did you trace that wire back, either on the harness or the schematic? it goes to one of the fuel injectors. Just a thought, but I don't think the HID ballast was the cause. |

I dunno Gearhead, it might be a coincidence but I'm not going to argue or chance it. Anyone got a part number? |

Is it the contact in the connector that's melted but the rest of the harness/wires are OK? If so, perhaps replacement of the connector and crimping new contacts would be an option if one were so inclined? |

I haven't busted it open. It appears that it melted and deformed the plastic enough to move the pin and break the connection. I meter'ed the main harness and there is still power there. I gotta figure it will be easier just to order a new one than to hunt down the connector. And cheaper with the gas and personal time I'd be throwing at it... |

Hey there. Caught me in a little Santa Cruz cafe in the middle of a 5000 mile trip from Santa Fe to Montana and back. I did the HID conversion and have been loving it. I throw more light to the ground than most cars around. . . . But I would be eating my words if my low beam were to suddenly fry itself on the road. Can someone provide a brief tutorial on what exactly an "auxiliary harness to the battery"/relay would consist of, so I can look into doing this before I hit the road again in several days? I assume that I can keep the high beam on the main harness? Thanks. (Message edited by desert_bird on September 03, 2008) |

DB, basically what we are talking about it using the factory wiring harness to power a relay. The relay runs between a direct battery connection (fused) and the ballast. This way the factory harness is only powering a tiny relay load, vs. the entire lighting load. Most of the aftermarket HID kits (at least the reputable ones) are set up this way. Does this make sense? |
