Hey guys, I just recently bought a 2k1 X1 Lighting with about 12.5k miles on her. The dealer did a full service on the bike when it was brought in and when I first got it there were no fluid leaks. Well I ride it it more and more, and I notice my shift linkage is loose where it goes into the primary so I tighten it up some. Before this I had noticed a small spot of gear oil on the ground, afterwards its been getting bigger and bigger. The local hd dealer said it might be the gasket for the cover and being broke from buying the bike(and trying to sell said bike since I need the money worse right now) i've not had it fixed yet. I rode the bike about 2 hours on the highway from my old home to my new home and the fluid leaked out more while riding, and got all over my back tire and brake, plus once parked it left a nice mess on the ground. I'm not riding it anymore because of this, but its hard not to. I was told by the HD dealer that when they got the bike it didn't have the lower fairing on it, and they put it on. I'm wondering if they messed something up with the shift linkage since it has to come off to put this fairing on. anyone have suggestions? Gray |

Leaking primary gaskets, particularly if they used the old factory stock paper gaskets, are par for the course. I think I had about a 60% success rate trying to use those old paper things on my M2... To have any luck with them, I had to install them, do a heat cycle, retorque the primary cover bolts, do another 3 or 4 heat cycles, and retorque them a third time. Besides the fact that those original paper ones didn't want to seal, its a 3 or 4 hand job to get them on without folding something or missing a hole. I eventually got it down to a science with wooden dowels that sit in the primary bolt holes and that the gasket and cover could then slide over, but even then it often felt like nailing jelly to a tree. The Cometic paper ones were much better, and the James metal gaskets were just about flawless (even when reused several times). I think the new factory part is a metal one. It'll cost more, but you can reuse it. No reason the dealer should have pulled that cover to do a service or work on the shift linkage, unless they updated your primary chain tensioner to the new better part (and Kudo's to them if they did). You also want to distinguish between a primary cover leak (not uncommon) and a blown crank seal (also not uncommon). Both will oil down the back of the bike, but need different fixes. A crank seal leak will blow tranny fluid out the transmission vent. |
