Jose, I think negatives are what she would need. Pics off the web dont reproduce well in print. Got all the way back huh? Im impressed. I didnt think it would make it. Yank that head off yourself. Have it repaired, then reinstall yourself. Basic tools and a torque wrench are all you will need. Sam, If your taste in women are like your bike, you gonna get no tail, boy. Matt, Went to your site. You got the best side of me. Tried to download one of the video files. Way too big for my slowass computer. Hillbilly Ed, I rode thru your town the other day. It was way too early in the am to wake you. Nice state facility up there on top of the hill. Looks new. I kept on riding for fear of them keeping me there. Roger, I have a bloody hand print on the right shoulder of my jacket and on the left side of my tank bag. I wish someone could have got a pic of us riding down to the motel. Me bent over the tank and you passed out, trying to fall off. I have a grandson that is going on a school field trip down to Huntsville. Any chance of getting him some "inside" views of some things? He is only 10. If so, let me know and I will get dates and times that he will be there. He would be in tall cotton if that could happen. Frank, Thanks. Dont go buying one. If you run across a used one, fine. Nice riding with you and Sam. I was on the road for 10 days. Maybe I will post some of my thoughts about the ride when I get the time. |

Jose After I got home I ordered the tool from Jims so I could fix the other broken stud of the weekend. When I get done with it you are welcome to use it. I will post and report on the ease of use when I test it out. It should be here this week.. David Ingle 99 S3T Black 99 M2 Yellow |

Dave, Cool, thanks for the offer! I think JMartz might be in my area for Thanksgiving weekend and he offered to bring his Jim's tool with him and other tools needed to pull the heads if that is what has to be done. I'll let the bike sit at least until then and try to do it when he's in the DC area. If that doesn't work out, I'll email you about it John, Yeah I didn't think I would make it either, Dave was kind enough to ride with Linda and I on the way back just in case something happened. The bike made it, so I was relieved. Maybe I should have just ridden it like that on Saturday, but I know if I had done that the other stud would have broken in the middle of nowhere. So I'm glad I played it safe on Saturday. Once again, many thanks for all your efforts to try to fix it. Spidey, Unfortunately not! Bob, 800k in size? Is that 1024 x 768 resolution?? |

Jose, I could not find your email address to contact you direct so here goes. There is only a small piece of the E-Z Out still in the stud. You might be able to use a long handled punch to break it up. If you can, then I would put some heat to the broken bolt and surounding head and try to remove the bolt again with another e-z out tool. If we had access to some heat in the begining, I am confident that it would have backed out before it broke the tool. Otherwise, I would still break up the e-z out tap with a long punch anyway before trying to use the Jims tool. Those taps are super hard to drill but are brittle enough to break IF you can get to it. In the end I knew that either the bolt would back out or the tool would break. Wish it would have went the other way. I could not believe the lack of tools that shop suffered from. Not even a center punch much less a torch. |

NIce pic JQ. I boke an ez out in the head once talk about a pain had to have it burned out. I didn't have the patience. Next time you use an ez out drill a hole all the way through the stud/bolt so if it does break you can punch the broken piece through. |

Jose: In the absence of an EDM, once a stud breaks in a head the part will never be the same. In my many attempts at removing broken steel studs in aliminum heads (HD and others) I can only remember one ocasion in which th stud actually came out with a hardened, backcatching removing tool (hardout). In all other attemps the easyout broke or the tap broke as I was tryimg to clean out the now mangled threads. If you have broken a haderned peice of steel in the stud/head, as mentioned above, you might be able to chisel it out with the right tool but the final result is not likely to be pretty. Once a hardened piece is in the head controlled electric melting is the only way out. This process also saves the threads. The Jims tool does a good 2nd rate job for lazy or broke owners who prefer to slightly mutilate the head in exchange for not having to remove it. After the Jim's tool drill out, the threads are gone and you must helicoil. The Jim's tool is (I dont remeber exactly) $50 - $80, the helicoil kit al least $30, plus if you don't do it yourself labor of maybe 2 hrs. @ $55. Thias is about ca. $150 for the "quasi-mutilated" repair. Then, of course is the NDM job. Removing the head, gaskets, labor way over $300. Finally a new head ca. $250. What wuld you perefer? In this day and age with labor cost so high why would you ever choose repair over replacement? |

Should we start a quick board about this or move it to the Exhaust Knowledge Vault?? Let's see 1) Buy/install a new front head $550. Probably end up taking the rear head off to "freshen it up", so say $1100. 2) Try to drill it out with Jim's tool $150, resulting in a "2nd rate" repair....... I'm broke but not lazy, I just need the tools and the time. I think I'll save my money now and leave it parked till the snow flies and then try #2, and probably end up doing #1 |

Hey Jose Remember me? You don't know how many times I've removed those studs. I TIG weld a 1/4" nut to the end of the stud. Works everytime! Let me know. Stan |
