Has anyone else been unable to get their 5th gear recall service done because the dealer does not have the kits to do the work? My dealer has used the two kits sent to them by Buell to update the two 1125's left on the floor...when they called to get a new kit they were told that new kits will not be sent until all the paperwork has been filed for the kits that have already been sent out. The dealer wasn't specific regarding whether it was the paperwork for the dealer's kits or all of kits sent to every dealer. I know that my dealer installed the kits three weeks ago and has submitted their warranty and recall paperwork. Either way my initial call to the dealer was roughly three weeks ago and they still have no answer regarding when they will be getting new kits. Any thoughts? I am stumped on how to handle this one...do I go to Buell or just wait for the dealer to work this one out?

Thanks in Advance!

I know the dealer needs your VIN to order the kit. How it works after that, I couldn't tell you.

Having said that, I wouldn't expect Buell to deny sending a kit to a dealer for a bike that needs the recall done. May want to talk with another dealer if that's an option.

Call Buell Customer Service or go to another dealer. Sounds like these guys are full of it.

I`m thinking about changing dealers too. Mine never has any answers and does not take any initiative to get things done. (Always an excuse) The last time I checked they still don`t have anyone trained to work on the Helicon.

You would think that they would be kissing my ass since I was a no haggle cash in hand customer.

Come on over to Gateway Buell and HD! They are supplying the control riders with 1125Rs to lead the novice class with and they'll have a display tent for the track day tomorrow plus they are giving away track days with new Buells.

Several of the guys there own/ride Buells, and several are MCRA members, two of them help with tech inspection during track days and the mechanic keeps asking me if BadWeb has anything new to check into.

Now if only they can fix their portable dyno ...

(they also called the factory to get my recall parts overnighted so I could be ready for the Buell Homecoming and got it done in 30min or so over my lunch break that day)

A recall is is very different from a service bulletin.

For legal reasons, paperwork has to be completed to ensure that the recall has been performed on a specific VIN matching the current owner's name and address.

Buell sent out a bunch of recall kits immediately to cover dealers inventory.

Owners need to go to the service department and have them request the parts for the recall and you as an owner have to sign that request.

Once the parts are in that are dedicated to your VIN, then the service department should call you and set up an appointment.

The service department should be on top of this procedure and know exactly what to do, my dealer was.

I called my dealer and asked about the recall. After being on hold a bit, they managed to find it online. They ordered up the parts for it, and a week later they were in. Couldn't schedule the appointment cause they didn't have the "specail tool" to do the recall. A month later, they got that in too.
Took it in yesterday and got it done. Never saw any paperwork other than the work order. Never had to sign anything. And they didn't put my VIN on anything that I know of??

Hi, I bought a July 08 and asked if the 5th gear had been done and was told it was done at the factory. The early to late 07 were done at the dealership. Not sure what the cut off date was. I was told mine was not in the Vins that needed it done. I worked there years ago so I know there a trustworthy group.

There is no reason your dealer will be delayed as a result of Buell.

Dealers are sent an initial shipment and then, to replenish, are shipping additional kits based on providing VIN's for kits installed. This is to insure kits are getting installed AND to provide for equitable distribution of the kits. (i.e. one dealer doesn't have 40 sitting on a shelf while another can't get them).

The objective is to get the kits and the bikes married.

A simple call to Buell Customer Service will have you fixed up pronto. Any problems drop me a note.

Easy fix.

When this recall was announced, the initial shipments to the dealers was a wave shipment to get at least some kits to the dealer network. Once the wave shipment was completed, the motor company then allowed us to order the kits via a faxed form, including the affected VIN of each vehicle we needed a kit for.

The frustrating aspect of the recall is that we received a notice at the beginning of July stating that the wave shipments were completed and we could order the kits as we needed them. So we did. After 2 weeks of nothing coming in, we got another letter, identical to the one we received at the beginning of July, but stating that we could order them as of mid-July! I'm still waiting for the kits to this day after ordering them twice! I made Buell aware of this problem, and I need to contact someone at H-D on Monday to try and get to the bottom of why we haven't received these recall kits as of yet.

>>>I need to contact someone at H-D on Monday to try and get to the bottom of why we haven't received these recall kits as of yet.

I suspect you'll hear from them . . . call it a hunch.

The Buell Values would dictate that, even if there was a snag in the system, someone should make sure that information is properly and promptly disseminated to affected parties.

It will be.

I am not affected by this recall in any way, shape or form...so I am unbiased. But let me be the 10th or 100th Badwebber to say....

Court--You are simply amazing and a great liason! What a great guy. We truly appreciate everything you do!

The dealer I bought my 1125 from didn't have the recall kits when I called. They told me they'd call me in a "couple weeks" to set up an appointment. They never did. I would expect more from the 2008 #1 ranked Texas H-D/Buell dealer (according to Ride Texas magazine).

Fortunately, I found another dealer who had the kits in stock and I was able to book an appointment. The install took them about 3 hours.

My suggestion is to call around and find another dealer who has the kits in stock or is more willing to help out a Bueller.

The kit only consist of three parts. I do no know if it is possible to order the parts separately, but they should not be too expensive.

Court- Thanks a million!
Odinbueller- Thanks for confirming my dealers comments to me. My dealer has been very good to me and it is good to know that they are still treating my right!

Hey Mike,

I think you and I had touched on this topic once before, but, (for clarity) I guess I was under the impression that the shaft itself was replaced along with these other parts??? If the (potential) "galling" on the clutch shaft (per the safety recall info.) was a problem, don't they replace the shaft as well?

I guess I'm still not crystal clear on this one.....

Thanx, Tracy

Here is a link to the info.

Anything not covered in the procedure, like excessive galling, is a case by case situation and determination of replacement, I would think.
