Blake,

In the new messages section, I'd like the password to erase itself from the text field every time you check. This is good for security, and people remember their passwords better.

Thanks!

Dave

Ed.: Dave: Depending on which is the culprit (maybe both), you can turn of that function within your browser (MSIE 5.0+ will fill in your username/pw if you let it); and/or you can deselect that option within your profile options using the Edit Profile Utility.

But, uh... Dave? Exactly what are you insecure about concerning BADWEB? R u afraid the Jewish Lightning bolt will come crashing through your door and post offensively under guise of your registered username? (Okay then, I can understand your concern.) Or... have you been assimilated into our nation's confidential defense industry and are now so paranoid about security/passwords that you have trouble sleeping at night? Been there, still doin' that myself. I have to type in two passwords just to boot my own PC!! I'm sic!

I'm new here ('00 M-2 Last Friday, Molten Orange). I've asked a couple questions, but people keep referring me to the FAQ and archive areas. The only FAQ I found points to something else, and the only archives I found are August and Sept.

Also, the search function seems to hang, so I haven't been able to find anythng yet.

Start at http://www.badweather.com and click on the enter button.

From that point on use your right mouse button (if your browser uses that system). This will get you up to date and help keep you from getting lost in the system structure.

Once you go through as much as you have time or patience or interest for, then start using the new messages function (bookmark it once you find it). The new messages function will help you sort through a lot of stuff. Then, once you've done a search for new messages since you last logged in, use the right mouse button again to help keep track of where you are.

The main entry into the discussions seems to be thru Discussion_Topics, which puts you in "window" mode, and which the right mouse button gets you out of.

Sorry if you knew this already, but this has worked for me. If this didn't help, sorry, but I just sort of surf around, hit various combinations of buttons until I find something interesting, usually have 2 to 15 windows open, and sort of wander and browse and read while doing other stuff. Sort of like I ride sometimes, "I wonder where that goes, oops dead end and big dog, u-turn time....".

Did this help any? Or did I just add to the confusion and clutter.

Mike:

You must have a Mac? the right button in IE5 brings up a menu. in any case, could someone provide a URL to the FAQs and/or the archives? That would help immensely

Dave

PS: Are you a SEWisconsiner? I live in Racine. Didn't go to Eaglethon 'cause bike had 60 miles on it and didn't want to chance a humongus rainstorm on an unfamiliar bike.

Dave,

I use a PC (not politically correct). I should have said "right mouse button, then click on open in new window". Sorry about that. I also use Netscape (which while at work I refer to as "Escape"). I tend to open about 5 or 10 windows at home, then go get a cup of coffee while they start to come up.

For the FAQ you might try posting a message to Blake, I think he's the owner/admin/ride leader here. I think I saw a link to a site suggestion section for here. The link to the FAQ might have gone offline, or got rem'd out. I haven't been here long enough to know forsure though. (I'm certain someone will correct me if I'm wrong.)

Also, you might browse around the http://www.americanthunderbike.com/ site. There seems to be a lot of people both here and there, with the occaisional cross-posting.

I'm about 20 or so miles west of Milwaukee, up in the Hartland area.

Dave:

The FAQs (really just a complilation of categorized tech talk) are now located as subtopics near the top of the "General Discussion Board" (GDB). Try searching for keywords only on the GDB and it's subtopics; I think the BBS has grown to large for the keyword search to be able to cover the entire board in a timely fashion. I'm asking the BBS software authors to fix that however.

Sorry for your trouble.

Blake

PS: Rather than having to right click and choose "Open in New Window" from the "New Messages" results page, you can edit your profile so that all links resulting from your new messages search are automatically opened in a new window.

Blake: Any chance in having the capability to change a picture or re-send a picture already uploaded? (not on a profile)

If not, how about getting a "delete post" option in the "Edit Profile" area? Currently we can only edit the last few posts we send, but not delete them completely.

Superb Board Blake!

Could you use a link to photos instead of automatically displaying each photo? When I want to read one of the "last day" messages, for example, I am faced with a 1M+ download of the entire list of messages for that topic. The text alone could be very fast, but pics really slow it down. Thanks.

Ed.: Excellent suggestion Kevin. In addition to what Mike and I posted below I offer the following to those wanting to post larger or existing pic files:

If your pic is already on a website, or can be easily uploaded to your website, you can avoid the size limit and keep the pic(s) from loading with the BADWEB page by using the "\newurl{URL of PIC file here, hyperlink text here} command. You can see how I used the "\newurl{pic URL, hyperlink text} command format in my response to Jose towards the bottom of this page.

Example: If I wanted to post a new page hyperlink to a picture with the URL = "http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/43/734.jpg" with the hyperlink text "Jimmy Mac is wack!" I would type the following:

\newurl{http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/43/734.jpg, Jimmy Mac is Wack!}

and what my post would contain is the following:

Jimmy Mac is Wack!

Or, as stated below previously, you can simply set your browser to only display pictures when you specifically request them to be shown (see both my and Mike's discussions on this below).

DAve: I'll put that one on the list for the BBS guys to consider.

Gee Kevin, that option is available within your very own web browser's internal settings. For example, in MS Internet Explorer 5.0 you would click on "Tools", then "Internet Options"; then click on the "Advanced" tab, scroll down to the "Multimedia" section and deselect the checkbox next to "Show Pictures." Even so, I'll try to do a better job of keeping the GDB lean and mean.

Peter: using Netscape 4.5 on a Mac, go to Edit menu and open "preferences"; under "Advanced" there is a checkbox up top where you can select not to download images etc. If you have no checkmark in that box, you should just get markers instead of actual images. Then you can select to open the images in a new window by clicking and holding down the mouse button.

Macintosh forever

Hope this makes sence ???

I couldn't resist posting these simple rules. I know they're targeted towards a different forum, but they can be applied to this "most excellent" site Blake has here. I'd call them "guidelines" versus rules though. (I did not come up with these)

Top 7 Laws of List Etiquette For Discussion List Members:

1. Lurk, Listen & Learn before you Post to any discussion list or ask any editor or moderator a question that has already been answered through the list, its' website or FAQ.

2. Read the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) if the site has one. This will save you from asking embarrassing questions and the other list members will thank you for not wasting their time.

3. Be respectful of the list owner or list moderator, and when in doubt about any issue, send a private email before sending a public email. Also, don't YELL! at the list owner, because he or she is a human also, and most folks are glad to help you get on or off their list if you're having troubles.

4. Read the instructions on how to get off a list, and then follow them. If you are having list admin problems, do not send your problems to the list, but rather send them to the list owner for handling.

5. When in a hearty debate, remember that you can always respect someone's opinion, even though you don't agree with it. Never insult someone or attack someone in public, as you are the one who will look bad.

6. Keep blatant self promotion off the list at all times.

7. Add value or don't post. Avoid "Me Too's" and one line statements unless that's the norm for the list community you belong to.

#1,3, 5, and 6 really hit home in the last month around here by an exception to the norm. It was the exception though. :-)

Some of the sub-topics in the GDB don't have the "Start a New Conversation" button. I've tried posting to questions, but without a topic appearing, sometimes they tend to not be read. I've posted questions that should have been posted to sub-topics to the GDB and gotten immediate results. I'm sorry I don't have a better solution to offer than adding the button to every sub-topic. Not a major deal though, if you don't mind me posting questions to the GDB. Otherwise, this board is truly amazing!

Ed.: Steve: Thanks for your comments. I argued with myself over this very issue. Unfortunately, the ever more numerous subtopics really over-encumbered my routinet board maintainance efforts, especially on the GDB; thus the removal of the "Start a New Conversation" buttons. As compensation, I've tried to put a comprehensive group of subtopics on the GDB so that at least one of them would fit any technical area or other topic of interest on BADWEB.

I just recently discovered that a lot of old unused files got left laying around all over the web site when we switched to our own domain and upgraded to Discus-Pro at the same time. Once I get the board cleaned up and back in shape I may give the "Start a New Conversation" buttons another try within the subtopics already created on the GDB. If you think we need another specific GDB subtopic category, please let me know! Also, I'm finally getting into using FTP to administer the site myself, so who knows what might evolve; I've always enjoyed computer programming...

Please allow larger file pictures to be displayed. In reducing their size to 43K a lot of detail is lost. I am sure at this time it is needed because of harware limitations but equipment is constantly upgraded and the time will come for clearer pictures on this site.

Ed.: Jose: I hear ya man; I really do. I wish disk space was unlimited and modems ran non-stop at the speed of light. Unfortunately, as with most aspects life, we have to deal with certain constraints. Currently, server disk space is one of those constraints. However, if you become familiar with a good photo/scanner program you should be able to post top quality pics like that of

DAve's Nuked Demon '99 S3 or

This crystal clear, 640 x 480 pixel jpg is less than 32KB!

Both of the above pics are within the 45KB limit set for registered users. Even the 30KB limit set for those not inclined to obtain or use a username/password will allow very nice pics like those of

The BADWEB Home-Wrecker himself or

Steve's friend Rocky or

a very nicely appointed '99 X1 Lightning

Try setting your scanner on medium quality, and scanning at around 70 dpi to start, then adjust from there. Pics with more color range will require a larger file for an equivalent level of quality. Some of the others on the board might be able to give you some better guidance; if so I'd like to post it as a subtopic on the "Cool Pics" page!

Time for restricted access? I join Henrik in my concern for BWB shift from affinity to attitude. I believe the personal attacks, threats, name calling, confrontational and abusive posting has seriously deteriorated the board's value.

I suspect that if Bad Weather Bikers is to continue being a critical resource for Buell enthusiasts, some changes will have to made to eliminate postings from those that are driving constructive participants away.

Public forums with open posting will always have a few users that bring nothing to the discussions except a desire to antagonize and offend other members. I believe that the anonymity of posting under a screen name or "anonymous" allows destructive individuals to post their trash with impunity.

I suggest the following:

1) BadWeb be converted to a public read but registered member only posting board. Registered members should still have the option to post under a screen name or as "anonymous", but their real world identity would be available to the moderator should action be required.

2) BadWeb have a written "netiquette" policy that all registered users agree to follow. The policy should clearly prohibit malicious flaming, inappropriate language, personal attacks and threats of any kind.

3) Postings be monitored for inappropriate content by either the board moderator or a committee of registered users. Any registered user found to be posting inappropriately should be given the opportunity to rethink his/her approach after a first notice. A second problem should result in a loss of posting privileges for a short time followed by a probationary period. A third violation should result in complete loss of privileges indefinitely.

I know this will run against the grain for many BadWeb users. I have made these suggestions in order to facilitate a discussion about the board's recent problems. I would hate to see BWB decline to the point where the flamers push out the Buell brotherhood that I have found to be such a great part of my Buell ownership.
