Bike: 1999 S3 Ok.. My spedometer/odometer were NOT reading.. The odometer displayed the mileage but did NOT increase while riding and the Odometer did not move AT ALL. I bought a NEW speed sensor and installed it... STILL A NO GO.... I checked the main fuses under the seat and ALL looked good. Any suggestions??? | ||

On the fuses... I checked by pulling them to make sure they were intact... Is there a specific one that would control the spedometer??? I did notice that the sensor wire runs up into a bundle... then goes back towards the cylinders...... is there ANOTHER area that i should check out?? Thanks Matt | ||

Matt fuses accessories and memory / instrument White wire is the pulse to the speedo / odo colors listed and functions silver blue/white ---------- trip reset (a) white / green -------------- pulse to meter / odo red ------------------------ trip memory orange white --------------------- accessory feed (+12v) black ---------------------- trip reset (b)/ground speed / freq (from fsm) mph 20, 40, 60, 80, ---------------------------- frq 432, 864, 1296, 1728 I have no idea of the exact workings of the speed sensor this may not work I use this to test turbine flow meter pickups ( similar idea to ss ) sensor connected to bike wirirng, use a drill with a key type chuck hold the sensor nose ( in the gear box part ) next to the key teeth and spin the drill with the sensor hooked up the speedo should respond and the odo count it sounds like no pulses gettin to the meter, the fsm has an error that "the odo will register if the SS is bad" - not so. there are 2 set of connectors that have to work, sensor to harness, and harness to meter. + all devices and wires a stupid test unhook tach line like the speed sensor it SHOULD be "switched ground" (PINK) swap that to the speedo ( white ) idle engine speedo no work possible meter wires sender? move speedo to tach try drill(above) tach work? yes, speedo ?, sender ok wires ok this is called subistute testing ( unless you have access to the frequency generator [aka speedo tach tester] ) a multi meter check for power at sensor connector on main harness is in order. I checked by pulling them to make sure they were intact... That would be visual. Yes there is a fuse to control the speedo. I have had fuses that looked fine but a quick test shown that they were in fact blown. Not in the sense that the link had melted but instead cracked. Causing the same problem you are having. If you do not have a fuse tester, use a voltometer. If you do not have either, well replace the fuse  | ||

There should be a label around your tail area that tells you which fuse is your speedo. If you do not have a manual or said sticker has worn off I am sure some here can post which location it is. (if I wasn't at work I would look it up for you) | ||

I had the same thing happen and went ape shit trying to figure it out, I did everything short of replacing the sensor. I even took the speedo apart, becasue the fuse looked good. This was before I had my fuse tester so on a whim I replaced my fuse and bingo! |
