i just picked up one of the old buell dos programmable race ecm but it didn't come with any instructions, does anyone have a copy of the paperwork that came with it? it may as well be in chineese. gotta race in 3 weeks and i need to tune for the new 88ci motor. |

i do have a dyno at work. i have an 88ci, stage 2 heads, stock cams and a micron.i found out yesterday that our new shipping/recieving kid at work is a dos program wiz, he looked at the program and said it was easy, but he knows nothing about tuning a bike. i have direct link but i've maxed out some of the tuning cells, fuel curve is pretty flat at all throttle % but i can only get it down to 15:1 air/fuel. i started at 17:1 so its better but know where near where i want to be.-andrew |

i know that i can send the ecm up to henry and they can convert it to windows base but i don't have the extra cash rightnow, maybe in another couple months. i hope that makes it similiar to a s/e racetuner, that i can work with. |

Wow - afraid there are really NO instructions for the DOS-based controller, there never were. (probably why Buell never wanted these in the hands of non-racers) You can look within the program at the comment lines (semicolons) for some instructions. If you're familiar with HOW the controller works, it'll make some sense. Which program are you using - or I should ask which map? "1169"? You might be able to get pretty close by bumping up the LFUEL numbers and taking a couple pulls to see if you've been able to enrich it enough. I am assuming you already have the high pressure fuel regulator installed? If not, you DEFINITELY need to bump up the LFUEL command a good 20-30% and even at that with the big motor, you may not be able to deliver fuel. LFUEL line of code is early in the program - looks like: LFuel: DCW 1000 (1000 is normal - bump it up or down depending on what your sniffer is reading) This would just be a band-aid fix until you get the HP regulator installed. If you are going to actual do TUNING - USE CAUTION: DO NOT BUMP ANY FUEL VALUES IN THE TABLES ABOVE 255!!! YOU can MELT your motor! 255 is the MAX value in an 8-bit table. The bad thing is that if you enter 256, the program will "take" 256 but in effect, you just called for "0" fuel... 257 = 1, 258 = 2... etc. (makes sense?) If you have a TON of changes to make in the map, it is much easier to download the entire map and work it in your text editor and then save it as a text file and then upload it again. Also, reset your TPS - at the VERY END of the program. Make SURE your butterfly is totally closed - back out the stops all the way. You have to snap it a few times and then go to the end of the program with the ECM turned on MODE: DCB 8 <enter> (8 is the selection) (Message edited by slaughter on August 14, 2008) (Message edited by slaughter on August 14, 2008) |

i don't know what map is in the ecm exactly, but the last bike it was in was a 1203 high comp motor. i have not yet plugged it into my bike , i'm still using the direct link ecm. i'll try the ecm in the next couple of days, i wish i had a map that was close so i could just have that programmed in to get me through the next race and worry about fine tuning after that. and no i don't have a high pressure regulator, fuel system is all stock at this point i've got the tuning manual from henry also, i'm just horrible at computers, more of a hands on type.its about 20 pages of babel to me. If it's from a 1203 motor and you're running the same stroke, bigger bore, you probably CAN just change the "Learned Fuel" - LFUEL - to richen it up a bunch. Does the bike run with the map as it is now? If so, you can probably get away with doing one or two pulls with the motor warmed up and see generally if it's running rich or lean and then bump up the LFUEL and run it again. Problem is that for tuning at individual throttle positions and RPMs, it gets to be a real pain. I'd be tempted to run it on the dyno to see if it's too lean at any throttle/RPM band at the higher RPM ranges. IF you have the time, you can start tweaking individual fuel values on the front and rear but you really REALLY have to pay close attention because with a single sniffer up the tail pipe, you really cannot tell anything about how the front or rear are running - you only get the mix in the tailpipe. BASICALLY though, if the tailpipe sniffer shows to be OK, you're probably OK - and you can detail tune it when you get more dyno time. (I'm writing kinda fast without thinking - stuck at work and no time to think - hope I'm making sense) |

like i said i haven't put the ecm in yet, but i will give it a go. worse case i can just put the direct linked ecm back in.i did put test ports in each exhaust tube for sampling, so i can tune each cylinder. with the stock cams it makes sense that the existing map in the ecm might be relatively close, so increasing the lfuel should work. fingers crossed. |

to Slaughter what is the LFUEL command ? a sort of AFV ?. 255 = max. fuel value ...is this rule only for the true race ecm or it works also for stock and race kit ecms ??? if so how can you replicate a 20/25 or 30% more fuel in that cells where the value is 243 or 250 ( race kit ecm 5000 rpm full throttle front and rear) using ecm spy or D.Link ???? maybe fixing the afv to an higher value ??? thanks Alessio Babyhuey yes , with stock fuel pressure in the line you are going to need even 20/30% more in the fuel map values ( i noticed this ) and at this point stock system lives on his limit ( i have this impression). bye Alessio |

Alessio the 255 cell value is the same no matter each ecm you use,but the factory race ecm is the only one with the Lfuel value. it acts like a scaler for the entire map. the only thing you can do with the direct link is force the afv and then disconnecting the o2 sensor. |

is what i'm doing o2 sensor disconnected afv fixed at 100 and a Rapid Bike altering a 12r race kit map i squeezed the stock fuel pressure reg. and right now it seems to be a good idea. i hope the best for your race Alessio |

i'm looking forward to this next race, its the first one since our summer break and i've a lot of improvement to the bike. i redid all the suspension, built the 88ci motor, switched back to a micron from a drummer s/s,added a steering damper,8 piston caliper with a radial m/c, running full slicks, direct link(now adjustable race ecm)chain conversion and new paint. earlier in the year i got 3 3rd places and a fourth place in combined expert/amatuer in thunderbike and supertwins, so i'm hoping for better results. |

I am assuming you are not using an oxygen sensor. The LFuel value is input early in the program. ALL the values are 255 MAX. IF you are calling for 255 at any one throttle/RPM and are still too lean, you have to bump LFuel higher - but remember that LFuel as was said above is a scalar value applied to EACH point on the map. It's what I had to do until I got the high pressure regulator. Then I had to start tuning all over again. I would be tempted with just 3 weeks to see if you can get it running with what you have now - just make sure you don't have a too lean condition anywhere. When you get the high pressure regulator, you can start tuning for real. Getting to know your dyno operator is a real good thing. I am starting over in September with my own motor. The beast is being rebuilt from the ground up after the wadding-up. |

Andrew - are you going to be around Phoenix during the Labor Day weekend? We have a house there and we're coming out to visit friends and do a retirement party for an old friend of Sunny's. PM me if you're going to be around then... maybe we'll do food and swap stories. |
