I found a code in memory on my bike but it's odd that I don't always show that I have a stored code, hmmm. It would show up about once a month (I commute daily on the bike). Trouble code turns out to be 16 which is a high or low voltage condition (18 volts or 6 volts?). Charging circuit is fine and battery voltage is good as well. Other symptoms are the odometer won't show any numbers until about 30 seconds into the ride. Last night I had a problem -- not sure if it's related or if I accidently hit the kill switch, but I was in a spirited drive, about 5000 rpm, when suddenly the engine died (no spark). I pulled over and but it started right up afterwards and rode home with no problems - or any error codes... Anyone else have a similar problem? Haven't had a chance to troubleshoot yet - but I'm suspecting the ignition relay circuit or perhaps something going to ground. Thanks in advance. '00 S3, 36,000 miles. Race ECM. Battery Tender, 1 year old battery. |

That die, reset, run fine thing sounds like a faulty tip over switch. (BAS) The trouble codes stay in the memory until the next one replaces it. The last error code could have been from 3 years ago |

I thought inactive trouble codes were to stay in memory for up to 50 start cycles? But if you have one stored in memory your check engine light should stay on for like 8 seconds after you start your cycle. Anyone else have a similar experience? |

Two weeks ago, my son and I rode from Ptitsburgh to Cape May, NJ. Better than 400 miles. Second day there, the kids XB dies. We took it to the dealer in Wildwood (Millville HD/Buell). The bike wasn't charging. They checked all electrical components and found all to be good. They put it back together and it worked fine. Told us it was a bad connection. The kid rode it home fine. The old man's X1 didn't miss a beat. Check all connections and grounds. Some dielectric grease on the connections and seals would probably keep it charging. By the way, the folks at Wildwood (Millville) treated us out of towners great. |

There's an error code for a faulty tip over switch -- did you get a code for that Nate? Tip over switch sure would give the same indication, though. Perhaps I'll replace it anyways. |

I don't know if the BAS throws a code if it's triggered. I thought it was just in the daisychain of "kill bike if..." like the (kickstand switch + clutch out + not in Neutral) = kill bike. I suggest you lash a voltmeter to it for a while and keep an eye on it just in case. This what I ended up having to do for my old ironhead. Mine would charge fine on the kickstand but as it turns out, not when upright! It took a good long time to find that one! |

There is a separate trouble code for the BAS - but now my problem is really getting interesting. On the way home I lost my ability to use the blinkers and the odometer went blank, but when I restarted the bike I got the blinkers and odometer back... Plenty of battery voltage, both while the engine off and running. I'm curious now if it's one of the relays. I'm looking at the electrical prints but don't quite see how the odometer, signal and ignition circuit are connected (if indeed I only have one electrical problem...) Ah, the joys of chasing down electrical gremlins. |

Ground / damaged wires? the feed to the blinkers and the odo originate under the seat some where and go forward, the odo is on a seprate fuse at the box Instruments IIRC I am not where my manual is I am not sure where the turn signal originates. the flasher is under the seat on the x1 |

Sloppy the odometer memory (trip ) originates in the fuse block on the instrument fuse, the turn signals I think same as the lights with the handle bar switch completing the circuit through the lights and flasher to ground I dont have my FSM here |

Well, I never LOOSE the odometer / trip meter information. The screen just goes blank for a little bit, then comes back up after a few seconds. All fuses in good condition. I'll have to look and try the "wiggle" test to see if there's a specific harness that's a trouble maker. I'm suprised that if it was a short that there wouldn't be enough current to burn through the fuse. The other point is I don't know if these are even related or if it's multiple problems. |

sloppy, I have an X1W with the same problem as you have with the odo. I went through the fsm and found out that my speedometer is junk. My speedo will loose power and then come back like nothing happened. All my odometer miles are correct but it clears the trip miles. Hope this helps, or if you need anything just pm me. Paul |
