Bill, thanks for the advise, that last one about fedexing the jig around is great!

At this stage I'l leaning towards leaving the bike parked till the winter and getting it fixed then.

Q: What is considered preventative maintenance for a Buell?

A: Not riding it!

Jose:

I can fix it for you when I come up to Baltimore. I've got the special Jim's guide tool and drill bit combo. If you have a drill we're in business.

Replacing the head is the better deal unless you can get it EDM'd which is basically melting it out with a controlled arc of electricity using a carbon electrode.

If the heads come off that would be the time for a valve job and Nallin's 10.5 hurricane pistons. Let me know if you want me to also bring my ring compressor and pin extractor.

You know what works great for the exhaust studs drill the stud with a small bit 2 sizes smaller then 5/16 and use thoes new drill extractors from Sears thoes things are awesome. They work better of you have a impact drill :) Make sure you drill first it makes the job alot faster than just use the extractors the way Sears says to.

When I first joined this list, I was impressed with the name. I assumed it had something to do with the ability to ride in BAD WEATHER - my mistake!

In any event, I had a great time. How wet was it on the Cherohala Saturday morning? Ask Lisa -

howwet

Still, it cleared up nicely on the other end, and here's the motley crew from the four BAD WEATHER bikers who toughed it out (missing only John, who was taking the picture)

motley

And John and Sheri

johnsheri

And wheelying Chris and the brave TJ

chris&tj

And last, and least, me, in my patented "how gay is that?" pose

fasteddie

I'm one of the few 'bolt guys that stayed upright. I've been checking the web for training wheels for Darthane and the rest...

Anyway, I'm headed back up that way 2 weekends from now for a K1200RS rally. Already looking forward to next year - by that time, my house up there should be all set up as a biker haven!

AND, we can all hope for some REALLY bad weather!

This was the best vacation ever! Rode close to 3000 miles with my 02' M2L with NO problems whatsoever !!! Was it preventative maintenance, or was it just built on a REALLY good day? LMAO Either way, I had a fookin blast!

Kcfirebolt,
I really don't think there's ANYTHING to worry about with the Firebolt itself. Shazam has one, and I was watching him throw it all over the place, and keeping a report on how it felt to him. He's a hell of a good rider, and coincedently he's one of the few bolt owners that didn't lay it down on the whole trip! Soooo, my opinion is that its the loose nut behind the handlebars ;)

Speaking of Firebolts, the seriously injured rider that crashed, broke L6(?) vertebrae, so he might be in really bad shape...anyone that knows his condition better than I, feel free to correct me. I think his name is John.....

HEY BUELLER'S.

ok tom hear the english guy from atlanta.what a kicka## weekend. for the record my firebolt is still standing did 800 miles this weekend rain shine and rain again.did the dragon 3 times.one at night,2 in the rain, phew had to stop and have abeer first though.hehe.someone said they were woried about the firebolt, well dont!!!there's nothing wrong with them.bikes dont wreck on there own they need a little human help.!!!
first let me say a great thanks to jose and everyone for setting up his weekend[my first buell getaway]been on many harley trips but this was awesome!!wish there was a pub though.

i rode up fri from atlanta, the weather was great, the part of hwy 28 from franklin to fontana was excellent.the bolt cornerd like a dream.got to dg at about 4pm,and met lots of the guys and girls.never seen so many firebolts.it was great.

had the bbq then chin waged a little and headed to the village in the rain and dark, no problem for me im from the uk,never ridden in good weather hehe.

sat got up to meet the group at dg,when i went outside me bike was leaning over at a very sharpe angle,i sat on it and put the side stand up and it broke.it was held on by the spring.now my plans changed, hed for knoxville harley get a new one.so off i go the trouble was the stand was hanging out slightly and made it difficult to change gear,oh well got to do it.

so im going down the dragons tail its wet and slippery and full of mazda miatas.i go roud a corner and this yammaha coming the opposite way whipes out and goes in the bushes, everyone stops.im the closest and had to sit there cause i cant put my bike on the bloody stand!!!!there was even an old lady with a walker helping him, hehe i slapped it in gear and took off red faced.he was ok he rode off a bit dusty.

anyhow got to knox and they took a stand off axb in the crate.thanks to those guyes in the service dept they were great.im proberley boreing you now so i just want to say thanks to all who came had a great time.

2642 miles on a firebolt in 6 days....just call me a glutton for punishment. On the way to the Gap I thought I must have done something really evil in a past life. That seat might have felt better if I had been sitting backwards on it but I guess we'll never know because that was about the only arrangement of my twig and giggleberries that I didn't try on the trip.

As for the event....We trekked to St. louis on Wed. afternoon where racerboy graciously hosted myself and cyclone1 (his driveway could be a GP course). got to meet a few more of the SLAB group over some fantastic steaks and beer. Frank and I spent considerable time second-guessing Bob's mechanic on the root of his problems with his S3.

Left early on Thurs. (V2win out with mech. prob) met DAve in Illinois and left for parts unknown. Lunch at patti's(I'll have the pork chop, please). Informed near the gap that we would be riding in over the dragon at night. (pulse quickens). stopped at the overlook and more buellers pull up.

I should add this for general knowledge: The little beam deflector in the dim bulb of the firebolt should pivot like a level on an airplane dash...If yoou are riding at night with your low beams on and you turn left...you effectively light up what is right of you.... f*cking worthless. Anyhow I ask racerboy if he would be so kind as to adjust his mirrors so that I could run with my bright on. At the overlook he tells me to lead....They are BRIGHT!!!!!!

I take the lead leaving the overlook and soon realize riding in the dark behind someone would have been a lot more comfortable. get in a zone and am gone.... First time at night, dragon is amazing.

Fri did the wayah rd./cherohola skyway at speed.
drank considerably Fri. eve.

Sat. more of the same went to "nowhere" ...always wondered where that was...

Sun. rode to the hopital in knoxville, Rog is OK...huge relief. back down through smokey's

riding through the mountains in all that mist and fog and rain trying to follow a madman like racerboy is a treat all unto it's own.

more to follow

Mon. morn wake up to the hillbilly cracking open a beer, getting out of bed and tripping over $27 worth of recyclable domestics all empty except one that Ed is working on. Ed volunteers to guide us to and through his playground in eastern Kentucky. Wheelie through a one lane narrow guage railroad tunnel into Red River gorge. Fantastic Riding for all level riding, no traffic. After the we make it to an abandoned State Park called Broke Leg Falls....Most dramatic thing I saw through the entire trip. that place is surreal. It's something along the lines of a triple canopy jungle scene with a cavernous horseshoe waterfall of gigantic dimensions. walkways, stairs down the cliff walls and bridges all still exist for the most part but everything is overgrown with thity years of neglect. amazing that there were no fences or anything around this place.

After leaving the land of "The Deliverance" I never thought I would hear myself saying this, but here goes:....

Thanks Hillbilly.

rode on to Mt. Vernon,IL for a total of 710 miles on monday, with only one airborne excusion over some roadkill on 64 west. saw the red... then OH SH*T!!! carcass was unidentifiable but what I had for dinner was readily apparent in my shorts.

Swam the rest of the way to KC on Tues.

I want to thank DC and SLAB groups for efforts.
DGMR for putting up with our crazy drunken antics. hospitality shown to us by Bob La Mear, Ed manning, Roger Erickson. and a host of others...

As for the firebolt fiasco? All I can offer is that some of those guys have a lot of miles on their bikes, some don't, some weren't even in motion when they broke bones. Flatlanders in the hills syndrome? Maybe the bike instills to much confidence? Mine did me proud and I rode it hard.
My thanks to Erik Buell and the Company for whom none of us would be associated.

Now, if I could just stand up straight and uncurl my fingers. That would be great.

maybe an Ironbutt this weekend? I'll never be more conditioned in my life.

See you all next year!!!!!!!!!

Okay,
first footage is up, its rough but you get the idea. I'll work on smaller sizes over the weekend.

Pick the mov file, the avi file uses a codec most people don't have.

The first piece is 2 minutes of myself and roger (erick) riding from dgmr into the dragon, about 2:00 minutes.

http://www.mbsween.com/dealsgap.html

best if you download it then play it.

More pics and footage as I get them done.

Oh, hope you like the pic V2win.

A buddy and I (along with a contingent from Detroit) ventured down to the rained out Deal's Gap weekend. I was hoping to talk with many of you (we ought to have name tags with everyone's on-line nicknames to recognize each other). Unfortunately, we couldn't even do that. We arrived to the BBQ an hour and a half after it started and nearly everyone had cleared out due to the report of approaching rain.

We decided to pack it in and head home since it was raining from Friday night to nearly 10 on Saturday morning. Even when it stopped, there wasn't much sunshine. We figured it'd be hours before the roads dried (because there wasn't much vehicle traffic either).

In addition to placing faces with names, I was looking forward to wearing out my tires from the weekend's rides. At least we got some fun riding on Friday. Oh well, another time I suppose.

Glad my experience wasn't universal. I'm truly glad others were able to have a better time than I did.

I just spoke with Debbie Hammersley regarding Allan's condition and have the following sad news to report...Allan has been transported to Wake Forest University Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem NC...The doctors there have told them that on a grade of A to E, with A being the best, Allan is rated a D and has about a two percent chance of regaining the use of his legs...He was operated on today to stabilize his back...All we can do is hope they're wrong...

Allan's address is Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Allan Hammersley, Room 462, Medical Center Boulevard, Winston-Salem NC 27157.

I'm very sorry to report the above and know all your best thoughts will be focused on Allan's recovery...

Get Well Allan,

Bob

Here's Blaine, Linda, Me, Jeremy and Tom.

Jeremy crashed on some oil on US360. Blaine mentioned that
He and Tom almost went down too, but managed to save it.
Jeremy was Ok, but his bike went off the edge of the road
and down the slope quite a bit and mangled the handlebars
pretty good. He rode the bike through the Cherohala with the bars tweaked.
They ended up fixing it most of the day
on Saturday, so that's why they missed the dinner at
Fontana. They bought some tubing and made their own Handlebars!

When I got home on Thursday it was getting pretty obvious that a front was coming. In any case after several days in a hotel (a very good one) I just couldn't fathom another night away from my own bed.

in ref to above, when they replace the original recall stand they have to send it to buell to recoupe there cost.
mine was the recall stand that broke only had it for 3 days till it broke!!
i called buell on monday when i got back, they are going to look at the stand and see what the problem is.told them it needs a better weld job, onley 2 spot welds holding it together. i also told them im not confident in there product mabey they will have a second recall who knows.ive had many bikes and never felt uncomfortable about leaveing them, this one worries me.

Tom, shhhh, don't say the "R" word, Black SUVs will show up to your house in Atlanta...

But you had the funniest story at the dinner (the one about not being able to help the guy that crashed on the Gap because you could not get off the bike, I wonder what that guy was thinking?)

My account of the rally

First all my friends crapped out so I went solo. I took the highway as its a long ride (860) on a stock x1 seat. The ride was uneventful, though it was fun chasing semis at 100+ in the mountains of Tennessee.

I got to the turn off from 411 to 129 at 11:15pm and thought Deal's gap was 11 miles more (according to the map I had). Turns out its about 40 miles.

At the overlook I thought that I had missed a turn as was debating wether to turn around (I get punchy after 14 hrs in the saddle). As luck would have it John (V2win) was late getting in and saw me at the overpass. Man was I glad to see another human, and even better on a Buell!

John warned me about fatigue and arm pump on the dragon. I laughed, I thought the rodes I had ridden were twisty. The dragon at night is intense. John got way ahead so it was easy to ride my pace.

Upon arrival I met Hillbilly and the crew. Saw a bunch of Buells, everything from an Rss1200 to some bolts at DGMR. Hillbilly set me up with beverages and a place to sit down. The hospitality down there was great, especially considering I didn't know anyone.

The next morning I was ready for breakfast, met up with DAve , Racerboy ("boots and saddles guys, we're riding" ) , V2win, Shazam, and Cyclone1. They told me to bring my stuff as we would take a ride after breakfast.

This "ride" ended up being 250 miles of twisties! Shazam describes the roads in his post, fantastic riding.

Dinner at DMGR was laid-back and fun. Got to meet a whole bunch of people.

Saturday rained, Racerboy said "boots and saddles" and we all said to hell with it and rode. Dave (on a bolt) and Roger (s3) joined us for the ride.

If you didn't ride Saturday, you missed out. It rained on and off but the roads were plenty dry. We did the road to nowhere, the blueridge and some two lane stuff.

Dinner at Fontana was great (okay the food was lame, but the company was good!) Getting soaked riding 20 miles sucked, but the trip was worth it.

Sunday morning Erick and I rode the dragon. Erick video taped some sections which are available here dragon footage. The ride was great , met a guy on an old kz650. Very little traffic, probably due to the rain and time (7:00am).

I was packing up when I saw roger (erick) leave to get his tire. He was on it hard when I heard the crash (roger, I'll back you up on the "I was avoiding the caribou that the 3 ford GT40s going 120 scared into the road").

I rode up after John to check it out and was amazed to see how hard he went down. After roger went back to DMGR with John I bent the plastic on Roger's S3 to make it steerable, then I "rode" it down the hill to DMGR. Well Roger, all I can say is that the mods are questionable, but it still rolls straight and the front brake works fine. Hard to find neutral without a shifter or footpeg tho.

The ride home was uneventful. It rained pretty hard from Cleveland to Rochester (NY). I beat my time going out (12.5 hrs vs 14). Anybody have seat recommendations for an X1?

I wanted to say thanks to DC Brag and SLAB for putting this show on, and in particular to Joseé, John, and Bob. A fantastic job guys.

Also thanks to the Slab guys who let me ride with them when I was clearly below their level. And thanks to Hillbilly for the hospitality and the beverage supply!

Well guys,
I am still in Kentucky. Just after we got Roger loaded into the Ambulance, I received a phone call. My mother was in the hospital in Ashland, Ky. She had heart surgery the next day. I rode up to the hospital in Knoxville with Bob, Frank, and Sam to drop off Roger's stuff to him. The nurse said all was going to be well, so I continued on to Ashland. I am still here waiting to take mom home, perhaps Fri. or Sat. I will be riding solo to the house as soon as I get all squared away here.
Later,
John
