Hi all, I recently installed the Signal Dynamics Heads Up LED voltage monitor in my instrument panel. After disassembling the instrument panel, I used one of the spare bulb cups as the location for the LED. I widened the existing hole to 1/4 by hand using a drill bit. The original hole was already about 7/32. I then drilled a 1/4" hole through the back of the panel and shoved the LED through. Here's the LED in the cup. You can see the other spare cup next to it.
There's a cover that fits over the bulb cups. I drilled a 1/4" hole for the bezel that holds the LED in place.
I then reinstalled the instrument panel cover.
I mounted the control module under the fairing.
Here's the voltage monitor with the bike running. Green is good.
Easy install, even with the instrument panel mods. Took about an hour. On the road it's easily visible but not a distraction. I thank the other Badwebbers who mentioned this product. You guys are great! Bob |

Nice install. I have one too but my install's not nearly as OEM looking. BTW- this widget should be standard on the Uly. Don't leave home without one! (Message edited by Hughlysses on August 08, 2008) |

Hey Fatty, my apologies for not giving credit where credit is due... as a relative noob I haven't seen your tutorial but I didn't think I was the first to do this mod. So what else can I do? Is there an archive of properly Bastardized Ulys? |

Treads is the master at modification. I have but one official mod to my credit (three if you count the HID mod and Polly Heaters mod). No apologies necessary. I'm just glad others are finding the "light". Chadhargis got the original "Fatty Meter Mod" installed by my own personal chubby little fingers. It makes his bike worth more. |

I did it last night along with the dual headlight mod. Both cheap good ideas, thanks badweather. |

Where are you guys tapping into the electrical system? Tipsy |

Tap into just about anything under the screen, I first had it on the euro light, then rewired everything off the ignition circuit. |

I soldered into the Accessory Plug wiring, too. It's in that wad of blue/green tape in the foreground of the fourth photo. I wired my heated grips from there, too in case you wondered what the fuse was for. Hey Ft_B, a note regarding the linked thread with your excellent instructions: I believe what you called a "knockout" is actually a vent with a shroud to prevent water and dirt from getting in. There are two of them. I used the other spare bulb cup so that I wouldn't hit the vent. (Message edited by bobmcc on August 12, 2008) |

Bob-At what voltage does the led change color (if it changes color)? It is green so what is the V when green? I use my radar detector and get numeric readings from 14v down to 12.2 v while the bike is running. |

I don't have the official docs with me but from the CustomDynamics link in Fatty's thread we have: - Flashing Green: above 15.25 VDC - Steady Green: above 12.9 - Steady Amber: above 12.6 - Steady Red: above 12.1 - Flashing Red: below 12 VDC So if your detector reading is accurate, you might expect Red or Amber. If that low voltage is persistent, I'd think you have a issue. |

Mine is usually steady amber, sometimes green. At low speeds its red or flashing red. I think i got too much crap running. |

a vent with a shroud to prevent water and dirt from getting in How would that work? |

I keep a steady green even with the heated grips on. Pso's profile suggests he needs a Mr. Fusion to run all his farkle. |

a vent with a shroud to prevent water and dirt from getting in... How would that work? That's what it looked like to me... a plastic vent tube (or port) with internal offset barriers. It would allow the control panel case to breathe and equalize with the external atmosphere. Maybe to prevent condensation inside the case? Maybe my head's up my... |

Thanks for the official "Fatty Mod" Fatty. For those who haven't done this mod yet, it took Fatty less time to do the voltage meter install than it did for me to de-mount, mount, and balance two tires for him. It was pretty easy, even as anal as Fatty was doing it. |

I have the Signal Dynamics gadget as well. Mine is green at all times (unless idling) when I run my heated vest, PIAA 510's, heated grips and GPS. SO far it has been a great piece of mind.... Highly recommended. |

Tapped into the cigg lighter. I get green all the time, unless at idle with the Deathray on, then I get amber. |

Took me about an hour to install the C/D voltage indicator. I mounted the led to the PCB drilled a hole in the mask to let the light shine through. Tapped into the accessory power socket wires on the bike side and mounted the module in the metal cross brace. |
