Snowdave: Thanks. The switch-the-brackets-over job is currently stalled in the garage at removing the top triple clamp. All other bolts out, but still firmly attached... Looked in the manual (last resort: read the directions) and it says to suspend bike from frame to unload fork. Project for next week, I guess. I'm guessing no issues with clip-ons clearing the frame? I'm ebay hunting for 43mm clipons; seems to fit the R6 & F4i, so should be some around. Anyone have any comments about slightly used D205's for the first trackday? (NOT racing, just a trackday) The bike should be about 65% prepped by then, looking to do either Pocono in early October, or Summit Point a bit later. Projects go better with deadlines. Ben |

Ben, If coin is not a serious issue, don't even hesitate to mount up a set of actual racing treads. There simply is no way the D205's will last and they get real greasy real quick once you get the power and lean angles working together. The Metzeler Rensports, medium rear, hard front are outstanding (~$350 a set mounted). Pirelli sells the same tire with different tread pattern. Not sure of the model name. That said, I did my first three track days on D205's. If I had known the incredible difference that racing tires made, I would never have run on the 205's. Run your tires at a lower pressure, around 30 or 31 psi, on the track. |

Blake, full plans exist for race tires, but I AM really slow right now (perhaps forever?). I want to use the trackday to explore a little, and didn't want race treads aging all winter in the garage till next season. I was actually thinking D207GP's, as I've heard they slide more predicatably. For me, that'd be more useful than outright grip. Are the metzelers similar? |

Yes. And they are supposed to survive longer. The 207GP's are obsolete and in short supply. The 208's are the current Dunlop racing DOT. |

Hi All, Michael here. Finally got around to registering and getting setup. I run a 2000 X1 in CCS southwest region. Last years amature year was good. This years expert year, not so good. I've converted the final drive from belt to 520 chain with parts from ASB. I'm looking for a source for 23 or 24 tooth 520 countersprockets. Anybody got any ideas. I've tapped out evrywhere I've tried. Here's a couple of pics from the last race weekend if I can figure out how to include them. /image /image |

Ben, Had to compromise and wedge a 180/55 onto the stock rear wheel. Only problem I have noticed is that even after leaning to the point of loosing the front and lowsiding, I still have chicken strips on the rear tire. The narrower rim squeezes the profile to a steeper angle at the edges. Buellfan, Outstanding!! Please give us a rundown of your racing exploits. What class are you competing in, what are your strengths, and weaknesses? What tracks do you race? What are your lap times versus moto lap records? Who's ass did you kick? |

Has anyone tried a 160/70 on the back? That's available from Metzeler in the Rennsport... Also, Bridgestone makes a 170/60 BT001 in Medium compound. Anyone tried them? |

Well, I raced the Bolt only one weekend so far. It's my street bike too, so I won't be racing it much. I havn't entered a race for 2 years, so I was a bit rusty. For CCS I entered it in MW Sportsman, LW Super Sport, LW Super Bike and LWGP. The photo is from the MS Sportsman race, 1,2,& 3 were Aprila RS250's, 4th was a Duc that got by me on the straight on the last lap. The only bike that passed me in a corner all weekend was one of the RS250's (I'm not counting the one SV that went in too hot, passed me and proceded to go off track) CCS changed the rules for 2002 so the Bolt is no longer legal in LW Supersport. The limit for all other classes is 1000 cc for push rod air cooled, now it's 800 cc but just for Super Sport. Dosn't seem fair to me, I did the race anyway, no one protested me and I finished mid pack. I was the only bike on the grid that wasn't a SV650! If everyone could send a letter to CCS about the lightweight supersport class asking to bring back the 1000cc limit it could help me out. As far as lap times, I was about .4 seconds off my best time, but my last bike was a full race preped Honda Hawk and had sliks (2 years ago), I ended up running the stock Bolt rubber and had times in the low 1:23's. The weekend cost me about $300 and I got this little 5th place trophy thing, now I remember why I only do this once in a while! Sure was fun though. |

Your right it is 1210cc for LWGP & LW Superbike. I wish they would change the LW Supersport back to 1000cc though. I'm not planing any major mods. The 95 hp S1's pulled me by quite a bit on the straights for the LW Superbike race. |

Do you have experience on the tube framers? Do the XB's really round the corners that much better? I'm curious. The dealer here sold the demo on me! I like hearing about this clubracing stuff...I find it more exciting than anything else...there's just a more diverse mix of bikes and people, it seems. ...and Blake...the AHRMA has the Battle of Twins class that Buells fit into. Why don't you add that to yer Buell racing rules/classes as well? |

Buellfan, I agree, CCS should allow 1000cc a/c p/r twins in LW SS. What are they afraid of? Rick, I simply posted the FUSA/CCS class rules, which are the ones by which my regional roadracing club abides. Don't now about any others. |

Rick, I've never raced a tube frame Buell, but I've drug the pegs on a bunch of different ones on the street. About 2 years back, I had the chance to ride all the 600's and some Buell's at a track day (R6, XZ6, GSXR, F4, X1, S1). After riding the Bolt, I can say I've never ridden anything that has as much mid corner speed. You can get on the gas way earler than any other bike. As far as carving a tight line, until my stock tires got too hot, I think I could have gone under any bike out there on corner exits if I had just a little more HP. I've never rode a 250 or a 125 though, and that one Aprila did go under me, but I kinda blew the corner and was off line a bit. |

Hi, I've been converting my '97 M2 into a track bike up here in Canada and had a couple of questions: 1. I went with Crossroads rearsets and have found them to set the pegs further outboard (in addition to up and back). Has anyone had any luck mounting them in a way that would bring the pegs further in? I'm not real happy with the way the pegs moved out and it's too late to return them. Maybe the Banke units don't move the pegs outboard? 2. My M2 front end is pretty stiff, even with the rebounders turned all the way out and preload close to being in the sweet spot (close, because it's hard to adjust with the race style bars, but that's another story). I may have this sorted by a suspension shop, but I'm wondering what kind of fixes might be available (e.g. is there a good lighter fork oil, or are the stock springs too hefty?). 3. Is there a line on frame sliders anywhere in the world? Thanks for any advice. |

Today was another lesson in penny-wise & pound foolish for me today. It starts off simply enough, with another few hours spent safety wiring the M2. While this amounts to a frustrating experience (to say the least), suffice it to say I broke at least one bit per hole, and got them all stuck to boot. To add to this pleasure, I tried to drill the trans. drain still on the bike. I had the back end of the bike propped up on some stacked 2x6's, leaning away from me on another 2x4 under a frame tube. While breaking the bit (lying on my back in the garage) my cursing apparently pi**ed off the bike, which promptly threw itself onto the ground (away from me). Bike: bent brake lever, throttle now stays open from dirt jammed in it. Safety wiring is FUN! Guess I'll be buying a real pit stand this week, anyone got one used? Oh, and a brake lever? Well, on with the fun. since I had already broken off the bit, I tried to get the bit out with the plug still in the bike, no dice. Upon pulling the plug, I discovered it had a HEALTHY coating of magnetic chips on it. Small, splinter-like shavings, about 1/16" long. Will someone PLEASE tell me this is perfectly normal for 5K on the transmission? (this is its second batch of sporttrans fluid) It didn't seem to be misbehaving at all before this discovery. Besides pulling the clutch cover to refill, is there anything I should be looking for as a source of chips? Lastly, the race pan arrived last week, with hand-written directions. Good or bad, I tell everyone that an honest-to-goodness factory person (Henry Duga) called me personnally to answer my questions about racing a buell. Somehow, I doubt Mr. Honda is quite as accomodating. (just ask Colin) Please, though, anti-panic advice from group greatly appreciated. Ben |

Johnm2...if the passenger peg tubes are buzzed off then you could shorten the spacers/bolts and move the rearsets farther inboard. If you're not willing to do that, the Banke rearsets only stick out on one side Ben...my tranny was about like that with the same mileage. There was more metal "paste" stuck to it than splinters, though. |

Ben... My 2000 M2 had a broken primary chain tensioner, which would release some ferrous metal that would stick to that magnet. The upgraded part is much stronger. Though every time I pull that magnet it's pretty furry. I will stop saying "they all break and everyone should replace them immediately" because last time I said it, lots of people posted messages saying they pulled theirs after a gazillion miles and it looked perfect. Bill, None of the three old style wimpy tensioners I've had ever broke. Mileage was 18,500 miles, 15,000 miles, and finally 13,000 miles. I really think there was something else instigating the failures we've heard about. I mean, I ran the last one hard on the track. It was fine. |

Thanks to all for the reassurances regarding the drain plug. I will work under the assumption that its fine. More drilling tonite! Real race stand on the way, along with a 23T 520 Front sprocket and 43mm clipons. Under advisement, I'll check the tensioner condition when I refill the case. Ben |

Does anyone have any experience with secondary gearing for a long track such as Daytona. I'm headed there to try and qualify for the lightening series this Oct. I'm running a 22 front and 51 rear for the short tracks out here in Arizona. Wondering what the segestion would be for the rear or what combination someone has used that worked.. 2000 x1 converted chain drive. ccs #911 Michael |

New parts arrived! I had to mount up at least one clip on just so I could sit on the bike and make vroom-vroom noises. (Come on, you've done it before) New technical question, though: how did you all handle the oil tank drain? What sort of safety wiring can you do to that? And, I noticed when I dropped the bike (earlier oops) that the rear axle hit the floor. Has anyone made/mounted an axle slider? |
