HELLO IM HUNTER, HAVE HAD MY 1125 SINCE MARCH. WENT ON 75 MILE RIDE AFTER WORK LAST WEEK. ABOUT HALF WAY THROUGH STOPPED FOR A CIGERETTE, CHECK GAS, AIR PRESSURE, LEAKS, ETC. EVERYTHING SEEMED FINE CHECKED GAS LAST, INSERTED KEY, TURNED LEFT, KEY SNAPPED OFF IN FUEL TANK. THATS RIGHT AND NO THERE WAS NO SPARE THAT HAPPENED TO BE IN MY POCKET. MY KEY BROKE BECAUSE OF THE IMMENSE PRESSURE BUILT UP FROM THE RIDE, SOMETHING IM SURE ALL OF YOU HAVE EXPERIENCED THE FUEL CAP BECOMING DIFFICULT TO OPEN THE LONGER YOU RIDE. I WAS ABLE TO MAKE IT HOME, THANKFULLY, BECAUSE ONE OF MY FREINDS HAD A PAIR OF PLYERS TO PULL THE KEY STUB OUT OF THE FUEL TANK CAP AND A FLAT HEAD SCREW DRIVER TO STICK IT IN THE IGNITION. NOW AS ANYONE CAN IMAGINE IT CAN BE VERY EASY TO SNATCH MY BIKE, DONT GET ANY IDEAS I KEEP THE BIKE IN LIVING ROOM AND MY ROOMS THE CLOSEST LOL. MY PROBLEM IS THAT BMC "MIGHT NOT WARRANTY IT FOR ME". THATS WHAT MY EX BOSS OF A SERVICE MANAGER AT A LOCAL HARLEY SHOP TOLD ME AFTER I WATCHED HIM FOR THREE MONTHS COME UP WITH GOOD EXCUSES FOR PEOPLE TO GET THEIR PARTS WARRANTIED BY HARLEY DAVIDSON. SO....IF THAT HAPPENS TO BE THE CASE REST ASSURE I WILL NOT GO BERSERK ILL JUST NEED ANOTHER OUTLET TO SOLVE MY PROBLEM. IVE BEEN WATCHING THIS FORUM FOOR THE PAST TWO AND A HALF MONTHS AND FEEL I CAN TRUST YOU GUYS, I NEED HELP WHAT WOULD Y'ALL SUGGEST? P.S. ANYONE HEARD IF YOSHIMURA WILL MAKE A PIPE? IF NOT IM DOWN WITH RIOT PIPE, FLIPPIN SWEET!!! ILL PROLLY HAVE TO PUT IN SOME O.T. MYSELF |

I don't know about your key but I know for sure you should turn off your caps. |

DUDE HI HUNTER FIND YOUR CAPS LOCK AND TURN IT OFF its not even worth worrying about weather or not they 'might or might not' warranty it. just go to your dealership and find out for sure. IF they have a problem with using your warranty on this issue, THEN come talk to the badweb community to figure out how to proceed. |

MY KEY BROKE BECAUSE OF THE IMMENSE PRESSURE BUILT UP FROM THE RIDE, SOMETHING IM SURE ALL OF YOU HAVE EXPERIENCED THE FUEL CAP BECOMING DIFFICULT TO OPEN THE LONGER YOU RIDE nope, never experienced that, but my fuel tank was vented from the factory. i doubt they will warranty a key. and why would anyone think that they would warranty an ignition switch that the owner pounded a screwdriver into? |

Never happened to me either. Your vent hose might be pinched, you check it. |

I dont understand why you dont just throw the broken key away and use the spare....unless you cant get the chunk of key out of the ignition in which case BMC shouldnt warranty it because that was a retarded move. Call someone to bring you the spare key instead of jamming the broken off peice into your ignition with a screw driver. |

Never a problem on this 11 either. I have found that periodic spray lube in the key wells smooths things greatly on badweather bikes! Perhaps by pushing the key down slightly while turning has helped here as well?...no, I'm not trying to be "smart", just helpful. Good luck on your next set of keys and locksets which you should have to purchase as this doesn't appear to be a warranty issue...mm |

WHAT WOULD Y'ALL SUGGEST? First suggestion. Turn off the CAP key. But you know that already and it is not relevant to your problem at hand. Second suggestion: Man up and order a new switch and key on your own dime. This does not appear from your description to be a warranty issue. Third suggestion: Don't assume that a pressurized tank was the issue. In the two or three cases where a pressurized tank was reported by BadWeB members, nobody suggested it was difficult to unlock the gas cap. |

Well you still need to take it to the dealer, because if your tank is not venting then that means the ball check valve in the vent is probably defective or you could have a kink in the vent hose. At least one person here has had there ball check valve replaced. |

That has to be a very large amount of pressure to prevent the gas cap from opening. I would believe that the vent hose would either burst or pop off if the press. ever got that high. How did you get fuel into the bike to ride it back if the pressure wouldn't allow you access to the tank, i believe this will b a question that might need to be answered. I could see maybe a defective cap would be covered by warranty but the pressure bit doesn't really fly. Good work thou, better warranty then $104 |

Yes... Brewdog86, Vincent and I have all bumped into each other. For a small town, there are quite a number of 1125Rs here (3 or 4 floating around). Not sure if Hunter is actually an Aggie (neither am I)... Mike (Vincent) is for sure! So is Zack Hey Hunter... long time no see. Have a go with the warranty attempt. I can imagine that our unbearable heat down here (and lack of shade) might contribute to the key metal softening. These days we're hitting around 105F. Bike registers some ridiculous ambient temps (>120F?). How's that for an excuse? (Message edited by Pariah on August 10, 2008) |

To give a guy a break (no pun intended)... to give him the benefit of the doubt... why should a key snap after only several months of ownership? It could be user abuse/mis-use, but it could also be a manufacturing defect... I'd say that no one can prove it one way or the other without investigating, but if it is a defect, then Buell should warranty it. My left rear blinker when out recently and, like most responsible individuals, I blamed myself and just bought another one (at $45!!). I've now learned that folks are getting theirs replaced under warranty. I looked into it, but my dealer says they (Buell?) will not reimburse me since I've already made the purchase. My lesson? When a part fails, at least call Buell Customer Service and see about a possible warranty issue... |

If there is pressure in the tank, THAT is definitely a warranty problem, you have a problem in your venting system that Buell MUST address, as for the rest, well, sweet talk them, I guess. |

Assuming the key broke off for defective reasons and not abuse, I would fully expect Buell to foot the bill to replace teh key, the ignition switch if needed, and fix whatever issue caused the key to snap off in the first place. If I was 100 miles from home and my key snapped off, you can bet your ass I woudln't be calling someone to drive a spare out to me. I'd do exactly what this guy did. Again, assuming the key snapped for a valid reason. I can't see enough pressure building up in the tank to make the cap THAT hard to turn, but I can see a defective cap being that hard to turn, or a defective key being that easy to break. Sometimes keys have really bonehead cut designs that are prone to breaking. I had an apartment once where I needed to ALWAYS have a spare because the shape of the key caused it start to crak every couple months. |
