Have an 06 that recently experienced the dreaded fuel pump failure. New one is in, bike is doing great, but the pumps sound quite different. When the old one would 'prime' with a whirring, high pitched whine, the new one sounds almost gravelly. Does anyone know if the replacements were somehow redesigned or altered in any way? thx | ||

Coincidentally I just got my bike back today from fuel pump replacement. I have a 08 XT and the pump failed in about 2 weeks after purchase or 470 miles. There is little noise from my pump and I hadn't even paid any attention to it before it failed. Hopefully this isn't in the genes or I'm in trouble. Was yours warranted or did you pay? If you paid, how much did it cost you? Warranty labor is 1.5 hours but if I paid then the labor is 1.5X warranty allowance. Good luck and ride safe. | ||

Interesting. When my fuel pump failed over a year ago and was covered under warranty, it went from a quite loud high pitched whirring sound to a very, very quiet whirring sound. In fact, now I have to really listen for it. As before it quite noticeable. | ||

Mine was recently replaced because it was triggering a "low fuel" indicator even when full. Since I knew about the "chafed wiring" problem I asked them about that, they said the fuel pumps had been problematic and my replacement was going to be the superseded part. Seems they wanted to replace the whole pump instead of just the sender in the pump, better for me. First thing I noticed was the gravelly-sounding startup prime. New '08's with bad pumps is not good though, IMHO... | ||

New '08's with bad pumps is not good though, IMHO... To be fair, it's AN '08 with A bad pump. As I am heading out today for a 2500+ mi trip, I need the comfort of that distinction... | ||

Yes, neither is new 08's that get a flat from a nail in a tire. | ||

Ulycan- Mine was covered under warranty(06 bought new 8/07), but the invoice showed the cost of the part was 350-some odd dollars. Wow. Xbimmer-I assume my malady was due to wires chaffing as well, since mine was blowing ignition fuses. I am hoping what you say about the superseding new part is true. But at least I know what to look for if it happens again. Thx for the info guys. | ||

To be fair, it's AN '08 with A bad pump. Yes, neither is new 08's that get a flat from a nail in a tire. I stand corrected, and roll on original 50k wheel bearings. Points taken! I am hoping what you say about the superseding new part is true. Just know what I was told Portero, but it does sound way different from the original. I'm not concerned at all. |
